A Memorial Day Compendium - Steeljaw Scribe
You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children’s children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done – Ronald Reagan
Through the years we’ve observed Memorial Day on these pages in a variety of ways.  Through it all, we’ve sought to instill a sense of perspective and context to an ...

The wildest of blue yonder tributes at Charlotte track - News Observer
Weather permitting, the sky over Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday is going to be filled with aircraft of the ages.
The always highly anticipated prerace show for the Coca-Cola 600 this year will feature a tribute to military aircraft that have flown for our nation in many of its wars.
The flyover, continuing the track’s annual and laudable Memorial Day tribute to U.S. troops, will include a World War I biplane that’s almost 100 years old. World War II planes, such as the beautiful, sleek P-51 Mustang – a few of which are now in the hangar of NASCAR team owner Jack Roush – will be up there, too.
P-51s were flown in combat by the famed Tuskegee Airmen, courageous African-American pilots who escorted B-17 bombers into the heavily defended airspace over Germany. ...

French air enthusiasts hope to restart Concorde engines - Yahoo
A French aeronautics association Saturday examined the engines of a Concorde passenger jet at an air museum outside Paris to determine if they could be used again.
"The objective is not to get it (Concorde) to fly again but to get the engines working again, hoping one day to see it taxi on the tarmac for the pleasure of visitors to the museum," said Frederic Pinlet, head of Olympus 593, named after the Rolls Royce/Snecma engines used on the aircraft.
The association founded a little over a year ago has reached an ...
Concorde May Fly Again from AVwebFlash Current Issue
An Air France Concorde was to have undergone borescope tests Saturday to determine if its four engines can be safely started in advance of a possible return to flight. The aircraft is at a French museum at Le Bourget Airport, where it was mothballed seven years ago when Air France and British Airways ended supersonic service after decades of financial losses and the spectacular crash of a Concorde in Paris in 2000 that killed 113 people. There was no word at our deadline on the outcome of the tests but it's hoped the aircraft can soon be fueled and readied for taxi tests before returning to the air for heritage flights. It's hoped the aircraft can be airworthy in time for a flight over the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

...1912 -- Pioneer aviator Wilbur Wright dies from typhoid fever, at the early age of 45.
His death marks the end of his extraordinary partnership with his brother Orville, which culminated in 1903 with the first, powered airplane, Flyer, capable of sustained, controlled flight on Dececember 17, 1903.
Orville made the first flight, airborn for 12 seconds. Wilbur took the second flight, covering 853 feet (260-m) in 59 seconds. By 1905, they had improved the design, built and and made several long flights in Flyer III, which was the first fully practical airplane (1905), able to fly up to 38 minutes and travel 24 miles (39-km). Their Model A was produced in 1908, capable of flight for over two hours of flight. They sold considerable numbers, but European designers became strong competitors.
Orville sold his interest in the Wright Company in 1915. ...
