Geneseo 2008 Originally uploaded by airshowblogger
The 2008 Geneseo air show was one of the best air show experiences I’ve ever had, as far as flying went. I drove about 6hrs to be there and it was well worth the time and gas money — which in this day is saying a lot! This year, the folks at the Historical Aircraft Group (HAG) tried to wrangle in a large gathering of P-40 Warhawks. I really like it when an air show puts a concentrated effort on a specific type of plane, because it means I’m more likely to see planes that I haven’t before. Sure, I’ve seen P-40s fly, but there were 2 there that I’d never even seen!

Fence Check Reno Pylon Racing School published
Following the loss of three experienced race pilots and one serious injury at the 2007 Reno Air Races, this year’s Pylon Racing Seminar (PRS) at Reno-Stead airfield had an extra emphasis on safety. During the 2008 seminar, held from June 18 to 21, participants and organizers drew lessons from last year’s mistakes and worked together to make this year's races the safest they can be.The Pylon Racing Seminar helps train new race pilots and gives veterans a chance to refresh their racing skills. It also lets the pilots preview changes to the race course. As an example, pylons two and three have been moved about 30 feet inwards this year, to help make the course safer by softening the turn from the home pylon and reducing the chance of crossing the east dead line.

Australian, US and Japanese authorities are investigating the discovery of what is thought to be the skeleton of a World War II pilot along the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.Hikers say they discovered the skeleton hanging from the jungle canopy halfway along the 96-kilometre historic World War II path. Guide David Collins from Melbourne's No-Roads trekking company was there. "It's swinging like somebody caught in a tree and that's when you can really see the cabling and it's the exact shape of a body, same size, everything, but it's just covered in moss," he said. "It's exactly what it looks like, just somebody caught in a harness, in a seat harness." Australian, US and Japanese authorities will check records to see if any pilots were reported missing in that area. 'Lost in the fog'

The doors covering the three-bearing swivelling nozzle are the first to be opened in flight (the nozzle was not deployed).

Interesting to note that all of the Flying Heritage Collection's aircraft, save the Me-163, I imagine, are flight worthy and are flown pretty frequently.

Let's go Racing! - Mike OK, the Indianapolis Air Show has come to a close and I have one more event on the calendar (for now) on the calendar. The Reno Air Races start September 10. I probably need to find a way to get all this saved somewhere, but while it stays up, here's what I blogged about the Reno Air Races before the Indy Transponder became a reality.

2008 Cleveland National Air Show

Dear Air Show Fan and Supporter:

Good weather and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels will greet you this weekend at the 2008 Cleveland National Air Show presented by Discount Drug Mart - Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Burke Lakefront Airport in downtown Cleveland.

Check out all the details at www.clevelandairshow.com

We're thrilled to be hosting the Navy's precision jet team, which isn't scheduled to fly within a few hundred miles of here this year. They make a great finale to cap off each day of five-plus hours of flying.

The on-the-ground aviation amusement park will be packed too - with one of the world's largest planes, the C-5 Galaxy, and its modern predecessor, C-17, plus the mid-air refueling plane, KC-135 on the tarmac plus 40 more planes, activities and interaction.

Advance general admission tickets still can be purchased at Discount Drug Mart locations-save $2 off gate admission. General admission adults are $21, children ages 6-11 are $14 and children 5 and younger are free.

Box seating will be available on-site for a $10 upgrade to your general admission ticket. Once inside the gate, you can go to an upgrade booth to purchase a seat.

On-site parking is available for $12 per car. RVs are NOT permitted on-site.

For full details on how to make the most of your visit, directions, etc. to the Cleveland National Air Show, just go to www.clevelandairshow.com.

And wear your aviation garb with pride - a lucky Air Show fan will be selected as "Fan of the Day" and given a special gift certificate to Gillespie's Map Room - and have their name announced as "Air Show Fan of the Day." An Air Show staff member will be on the look out all three days.

Scheduling note:The same acts are scheduled to fly all three days-with the flying starting about 10:45 a.m. Saturday and Monday, and about 10 a.m. Sunday.

"Wings Over Wine Country" Air Show Huge Success
The Pacific Coast Air Museum's annual "Wings Over Wine Country" Air Show, held August 16-17, 2008, at the Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, CA, was a huge success.
Over 20,000 people visited the two day show, and were treated to the F-18 in transonic flight showing a huge shock wave, as well as the historic Lockheed P-38 Lightning and the U.S. Air Force's newest airlifter aircraft, the C-17 Globemaster III. Also highlighting this year's show and thrilling the crowd were Kent Pietsch doing his comedy act, deadstick routine and landing on top of a truck. Jacquie Warda was outstanding in her Pitts, as was Paul Lopez flying his MX-2. The Misty Blues all-female parachute team opened the show each day jumping with an American flag and jumping again later in the show. A large showing of warbirds thrilled the crowd as P-51 Mustangs, a P-40 Warhawk, a Hawker Sea Fury, T-6s and an F-4F brought back memories of aircraft that helped win WWII. The 2009 "Wings Over Wine Country" Air Show will take place August 15 & 16, 2009.
