P-51C “Boise Bee” from Moose Peterson Aviation Photography » Flying a succession of aircraft in WWII, Lt Col Duane Beeson started in a Spitfire then P-47s and ended up in a P-51C named “Boise Bee.” A Boise, ID native, Beeson enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in ’41 being assigned to RAF 71st “Eagle” Squadron. Later, he transferred to the 334th Squadron, 4th FG/8th USAAF. He was nicknamed “Bee” so he naturally decorated his planes as “Boise Bee.” First was his P-47 where he scored 12+ victories. An Ace, he scored the rest of his victories in his P-51C “Boise Bee.” The Warhawk Museum restored their P-51C in his honor and first flew it earlier this year. They had it at Reno Air Races in Sept and it was simply gorgeous to see, in the pits and in the air where it belongs! …
Grumman OV-1B Mohawk walkaround from Travel for Aircraft | I have a personal bias for liking this aircraft. The Mohawk was one of the types flown by my father and was one of the first aircraft I saw flying in an air show (the pilot reversed the props just a bit early and the aircraft appeared to fall, dropping onto the runway but seemed undamaged). It is also stout, with side-by-seating that allows for great viewing not to mention possessing twin engines — what is not to like? Grumman F7F Tigercat from Travel for Aircraft | WW II ended to early for the Tigercat to prove its worth as a combat design this was a fighter designed for the upcoming large Midway class aircraft carriers. Two 2100 hp (1566kW), a fuselage only just wide enough to carry a flight crew of two in tandem cockpits made for speed — 450 mph (720kph) at 21,000 feet (~6300m) though it could fly twice as high. The F7F had teeth, as well, with 4 x 0.50 caliber machine guns with 4 x 20mm cannon. Griffon Powered P-51 'Precious Metal' Gets Dressed For Reno 2011 by Martt | The Unlimited racers for Reno 2011 (Sept 14-18) are lining up to make this an incredible year of racing. While I'm certainly no expert on all the aircraft that'll be racing, I have spent some time soaking up some info on several of the most notable... and the Rolls Royce Griffon powered mixmaster P-51 (with counter-rotating props) known as Precious Metal is certainly one of them. The airplane is now based at the Kissimmee Air Museum in Florida, where it can be seen when it's not at Reno. I had the pleasure of talking with PM's race pilot Thom Richard on the phone Wednesday about how progress is coming along for one of the most unique P-51 racers ever built. Bunny McLarty - Vintage Wings of Canada - Just this spring, Donald “Bunny” McLarty was on hand for the dedication of our Hawker Hurricane IV to his name and honour. Sadly, he too has died. It has been a bad week indeed and we know full well that there are not many of these humble and brave gentlemen left to carry the banner of this greatest of generations. We will redouble our efforts to capture their stories and speak of their honour and their loyalty - to King, Queen, country and comrades. Bunny McLarty will be laid to rest at the Beechwood National Cemetery in Ottawa on Wednesday, August 31st. A Vintage Wings fighter will overfly the interment in tribute.
