Griffon Powered P-51 'Precious Metal' Gets Dressed For Reno 2011  by Martt | The Unlimited racers for Reno 2011 (Sept 14-18) are lining up to make this an incredible year of racing. While I'm certainly no expert on all the aircraft that'll be racing, I have spent some time soaking up some info on several of the most notable... and the Rolls Royce Griffon powered mixmaster P-51 (with counter-rotating props) known as Precious Metal is certainly one of them. The airplane is now based at the Kissimmee Air Museum in Florida, where it can be seen when it's not at Reno. Bunny McLarty - Vintage Wings of Canada - Just this spring, Donald “Bunny” McLarty was on hand for the dedication of our Hawker Hurricane IV to his name and honour. Sadly, he too has died. It has been a bad week indeed and we know full well that there are not many of these humble and brave gentlemen left to carry the banner of this greatest of generations. We will redouble our efforts to capture their stories and speak of their honour and their loyalty - to King, Queen, country and comrades.  Bunny McLarty will be laid to rest at the Beechwood National Cemetery in Ottawa on Wednesday, August 31st. A Vintage Wings fighter will overfly the interment in tribute.  For more on his life visit http://yourlifemoments.ca/sitepages/obituary.asp?oId=529466

Voices From The DC-3  from Airplane Geeks Podcast by thegeeks@airplanegeeks.com (Airplane Geeks) Guest Julie Filucci manages the Cessna Pilot Centers program for Cessna, but she’s also written the book, Together We Fly: Voices From The DC-3. Published by Aviation Supplies & Academics, the book tells the story of the Douglas DC-3 through the voices of the people involved with it, from its design and production to the present day. Julie had completed her type rating in the airplane several years ago, and did an article for AOPA Pilot on the airplane for its 70th anniversary in 2005. “The feedback from that article was the most I’d ever received for a piece during my time at AOPA. And not just pilots wrote to tell their stories, but also engineers, mechanics, stewardesses, soldiers, and regular folks who had taken their first airline trip in the airplane. Capturing their voices became a quest for me, as so many of the people from the airplane’s early days have passed on.”…
