c-5
As the Air Force's largest airlifter, the C-5 Galaxy can carry more cargo farther distances than any other aircraft.   It can be loaded from the front and back simultaneously, and vehicles can also be driven directly on or off the Galaxy. This means the C-5 can be loaded quickly and efficiently.  The C-5 entered operational service in 1970 and has been a vital asset in every military operation since that time including Vietnam, Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom. It has also been essential in humanitarian relief efforts including hurricane Katrina, tsunami and earthquake relief.
The cargo hold of the C-5 is actually a foot longer than the total length of the first powered flight by the Wright Brothers' Flyer at Kitty Hawk. "To give you an idea how big this cargo plane is, the last time it was here in Salinas 20 years ago, we had the sponsors' party" inside the cargo hold", said Executive Director Harry Wardwell.

First time in Salinas for the OSPREY!
ospreyThe Osprey is the world's first production tiltrotor aircraft, with one three-bladed proprotor, a turboprop engine and nacelles mounted on each wingtip. It is classified as a powered lift aircraft by the Federal Aviation Administration. For takeoff and landing, it typically operates as a helicopter with the nacelles vertical and rotors horizontal. Once airborne, the nacelles rotate forward 90° in as little as 12 seconds for horizontal flight, converting the V-22 to a more fuel-efficient, higher-speed turboprop airplane. STOL rolling-takeoff and landing capability is achieved by having the nacelles tilted forward up to 45°. For compact storage and transport, the V-22's wing rotates to align, front-to-back, with the fuselage. The proprotors can also fold in a sequence taking 90 seconds.

Meet the Growler Pilot - you might recognize him....
SalinasGrowlerBe sure to check out the FA-18G - Growler on the ramp from NAS, Whidbey Island. You may think it's just another FA-18, but think again. Stop and chat with "Jethro" the pilot, you just might recognize him. "Jethro" aka LCDR Scott Whelpley is home grown, right here in Salinas, Ca.... Scott grew up playing baseball right around the corner from the airport at Robertson Park.  He went to high school at Alisal and played baseball at Hartnell.  He and Sean D. Tucker share a love for flying that they talked about for the first time right in the middle of one of the past Salinas Airshows.  And no, so far he has not shared how he got the nickname....but you can always ask......

Join us for the Airshow Mixer on September 22nd at the Jet West Hanger at the Salinas Airport - more info at Salinas Valley Chamber or Monterey Peninsula Chamber sponsored in part by
