An Aerial "Get Well" For Ailing Aviator from AVwebFlash Current Issue
When the Oregon Aero SkyDancer wrote "Get Well Alan" in white smoke across the blue sky above Oshkosh last week, it wasn't only to express the company's wishes to the crowds at EAA AirVenture. Alan Henley, the lead pilot for the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team, who was spending the show in a hospital bed instead of performing in the airshow as planned, was able to share in the moment. "Our original intent was to capture it in photos and video to send to [Alan and his family] to cheer them up. But the way everything came together was incredible!" said Steve Oliver, of the skywriting team. At the time of the skywriting, Henley's wife, Jennifer, was with him in his hospital room, and they were able to watch the skywriting in real time from a computer that had arrived just an hour earlier. "At that moment, everyone on the grounds, in addition to the aerobatic community, was thinking of Alan and wishing him well," Oliver said. Henley is recuperating from an accidental fall at his home that left him paralyzed, and he will require extensive rehabilitation.

Last F-117s Cruise Mojave Desert Skies from Mojave Skies by Alan Radecki
What was possibly the last ever formation flight of Lockheed Martin F-117 Nighthawks took place this afternoon from Palmdale's Air Force Plant 42. After the Air Force formally retired the F-117 in ceremonies at Palmdale and Holloman AFB on April 22, 2008, four of the stealth fighters were kept flying as testbeds by the Air Force's 410th Flight Test Squadron, and by August, only two of the planes remained. According to a Lockheed Martin spokesperson, one is to be flown to storage at Tonopah tomorrow, and the final aircraft will leave on the type's last flight on Thursday, August 14.With the closing of this chapter in aviation and flight test history, the 410th FLTS has also been inactivated, with closing ceremonies held at Plant 42 on August 1st. While LM built and maintained the flight test aircraft assigned to Palmdale, the 410th performed the actual flight test activities, over a period of 27 years and more than 8,000 of flight hours. Lt. Col. Dwayne Opella, commander of the 410th, said at the ceremony, "I wish we would have stayed open longer, but it is time to go." There are no farewell celebrations planned for the last flight. For more information on the 410th, see the USAF news story "410th FLTS 'Baja Scorpions' closes historic chapter".
Oshkosh Finale: the Photos from Max Trescott on General Aviation by Max Trescott
The Oshkosh photos, all 56 of them, are now loaded. You can find them by clicking here or going to the lower right of the blog page. There are a number of great aerial views from a Bell 47 helicopter and a Ford Trimotor that give a good feel for the enormity of AirVenture. There are also some great views from the new control tower. With this, we conclude our Oshkosh coverage and fall back to our normal 3 or 4 posts a month, depending upon what aviation tidbits catch our attention. I hope you've enjoyed the coverage and that it motivates you to go to AirVenture in 2009!

Tailcam Video Shows Awesome Plane's-Eye-View of A380 in Flight [Birds Eye View] from Gizmodo by Kit Eaton
This video is a feed from the Tailcam in an A380 as the aircraft takes-off. The cam feed can be shown on the seat-back displays and gives you an almost Superman-like view of the aircraft from 79-feet up at the top of the tail. It's pretty amazing watching the behemoth aircraft surge slowly down the runway and into the air... and there's another vid, showing it landing in to SFO as part of the recent Emirates tour.
