Embry-Riddle’s Women’s Air Race Classic Team Gears Up for Competition from You Fly, Girl by Cathy Gale

Kiwi Mustang business takes off - Waikato Times
When selling his "Kiwi Mustang" to a United States enthusiast, Mike Crene was aware of some irony in packaging up the World War II P51 replica.
He had imported it five years ago as a disassembled kitset from the US, and was exporting it back, fully built. It was his first export but with two more under way and more planned, it is unlikely to be the last.
Building his first P51 Mustang was supposed to be a hobby but quickly became a business after the finished plane, complete with Royal New Zealand Air Force roundels, allowed through special permission from Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Defence, was an instant hit with New Zealand warbird enthusiasts.
"It was the first in the Southern Hemisphere so I got a lot of questions from the other guys."
His Kiwi Mustangs business has taken off, with two kitsets well under way to completion in a small hangar at Matamata Aerodrome. ...

This Week In Military/Aviation History 31 May-6 June from Warbirds Online
Well Folks, the speedy seven have flashed by again and like a bad penny, here I am again. Of course today is Memorial Day (traditional) and I hope your day was safe and peaceful. I also hope you took some time today to remember our military, both those who have passed on (Gone West) and those still serving along with their families. That is what this day is really about. I hope you also got a chance to thank a veteran or serving member of our military for their dedication and sacrifice. You have another chance tomorrow and I, for one, will try to make the most of it. In the meantime, what say we take our weekly stroll down History Lane, shall we? Yes, I think we should and shall, once again.

...1945 -- The last of 18,188 B-24 Liberators  was delivered to the USAAF.
This bomber was produced in larger numbers than any other U.S. aircraft and employed on more fronts than any other Allied or enemy bomber in WW II. Consolidated was originally asked to produce the B-17 under license, but submitted its own design for a more capable bomber. The placement of the B-24's fuel tanks throughout the upper fuselage and its lightweight construction optimized assembly line production and increased range and payload, but made the aircraft more difficult to fly and more vulnerable to battle damage. ...

The wildest of blue yonder tributes at Charlotte track - News Observer
Weather permitting, the sky over Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday is going to be filled with aircraft of the ages.
The always highly anticipated prerace show for the Coca-Cola 600 this year will feature a tribute to military aircraft that have flown for our nation in many of its wars.
The flyover, continuing the track’s annual and laudable Memorial Day tribute to U.S. troops, will include a World War I biplane that’s almost 100 years old. World War II planes, such as the beautiful, sleek P-51 Mustang – a few of which are now in the hangar of NASCAR team owner Jack Roush – will be up there, too.
P-51s were flown in combat by the famed Tuskegee Airmen, courageous African-American pilots who escorted B-17 bombers into the heavily defended airspace over Germany. ...

Concorde May Fly Again from AVwebFlash Current Issue
An Air France Concorde was to have undergone borescope tests Saturday to determine if its four engines can be safely started in advance of a possible return to flight. The aircraft is at a French museum at Le Bourget Airport, where it was mothballed seven years ago when Air France and British Airways ended supersonic service after decades of financial losses and the spectacular crash of a Concorde in Paris in 2000 that killed 113 people. There was no word at our deadline on the outcome of the tests but it's hoped the aircraft can soon be fueled and readied for taxi tests before returning to the air for heritage flights. It's hoped the aircraft can be airworthy in time for a flight over the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

...1912 -- Pioneer aviator Wilbur Wright dies from typhoid fever, at the early age of 45.
His death marks the end of his extraordinary partnership with his brother Orville, which culminated in 1903 with the first, powered airplane, Flyer, capable of sustained, controlled flight on Dececember 17, 1903.
Orville made the first flight, airborn for 12 seconds. Wilbur took the second flight, covering 853 feet (260-m) in 59 seconds. By 1905, they had improved the design, built and and made several long flights in Flyer III, which was the first fully practical airplane (1905), able to fly up to 38 minutes and travel 24 miles (39-km). Their Model A was produced in 1908, capable of flight for over two hours of flight. They sold considerable numbers, but European designers became strong competitors.
Orville sold his interest in the Wright Company in 1915. ...

DC-3 Reunion Hits Turbulence from AVwebFlash Current Issue | The structure of a much-anticipated mass arrival of DC-3 aircraft at this year's AirVenture Oshkosh is in question after an apparent rift developed between the owners group organizing the 40-ship formation and EAA. Last week EAA announced that it will "exclusively organize and coordinate all AirVenture activities for the DC-3 75th anniversary." The owners group, which says it's been working for more than a year to organize the gathering independently of EAA under the name The Last Time, has termed the EAA announcement "a hostile takeover" of the event and it calls into question whether a formation flight over Wittman Regional Airport on the opening day of AirVenture will be held. EAA spokesman Dick Knapinski said EAA is not trying to hijack the event; rather, it's trying to ensure it goes smoothly and safely…

"This Week In Space" – May 29, 2010 from Uplinks by Miles O'Brien | We begin at the end this week – the end of an era in space. Well maybe. This was the scene at the Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday – commander Ken Ham dead-sticking Atlantis down the steep glide slope to Runway 33.  The mission – STS-132 – was the final scheduled flight of Atlantis.  But she is not heading straight to the museums.  She's now back in her Orbiter Processing Facility – NASA-speak for hanger – where she will be prepped for flight on short notice should there be trouble on the remaining pair of missions. BUT the museums might have to wait -  NASA is leaving the door open to schedule an encore mission for Atlantis. Since there would be no rescue vehicle at the ready – she would likely fly with a scaled down crew that would use the Russian Soyuz as a lifeboat.  NASA will make a decision on this by mid-June. Maybe the shuttle program will end as it began – with a two person crew…

Sink Your Teeth Into The Many Faces Of The USAF A-10 Warthog! from blog by Martt
Catch the Air Combat Command A-10 East Demo Team at the Indy Air Show June 12th &13th
Nose art has made a bit of a comeback in the last 20 years, and the A-10 Warthog is perfectly suited to putting a mouth on the front end to accentuate that massive 30mm GAU-8 cannon.  The simple shark teeth design like shown above is one of the most common seen on A-10's.  I think these kind of teeth looked great on the P-40 and other aircraft from WWII, but it's hard to argue with the way it's taken to the extreme here on the Warthog with the ability to spit serious firepower out of that mouth! ...

Atlantis lands for final time after 25-year career from TAKEOFF TUBE
How would you look after 120 million miles? Atlantis might appear a little scuffed up to outsiders as it heads into retirement after a quarter-century of spaceflight. But to the trained eyes of NASA engineers, the ship is still in its prime — a fact that adds to wistful emotions at the space agency as the shuttle program winds down. Atlantis returned home from its 32nd and final voyage Wednesday, the first of three shuttles that are closing out their flying careers and eventually heading to museums. “The legacy of Atlantis, now in the history books,” Mission Control announced at touchdown. About 1,200 guests lined the Kennedy Space Center runway to watch the shuttle glide through a clear morning sky to a flawless landing at the end of a 12-day journey. NASA employees wore white ribbons with the name “Atlantis” and the shuttle’s picture embossed in gold. Even the lead flight directors came in from Houston for the occasion. ...
