Hale, who was a co-pilot in the 390th Bombardment Group during World War II, stepped back inside a B-17 Monday when the Liberty Belle made a stop at the Smyrna Airport. He sat just behind the pilots, taking in the scenery from the sky and reminiscing about his time as a second lieutenant until the war ended in 1945.
"It was like being back with an old friend," Hale said. "This was rather exciting."

Who Built the Airplanes During World War II ? from Wright Squawks by Roger Chua
In World War II, US plants churned out nearly 300,000 military airplanes, at a cost of $45 billion. More than half—158,880— went to the Army Air Forces. The rest went to the Navy, Marine Corps, and Allies.
Who built all of these aircraft? In popular imaginings, US automakers and other civilian industries converted to war production and led the way. In reality, the
burden was carried by aircraft houses established in ...

Reno Air Races… On the Bucket List? from www.jalopyjournal.com
Alright, so it may not be 100% on topic with old cars, but you've got to admit that real warbirds are right up there with the very best of the other vintage mechanical stuff we
drool over. I just got back from my first time at the Reno Air Races, and words cannot truly describe how amazing it was. I've never been much of an aircraft nut, but you'd have to be dead to not get excited at this deal. The first thing I encountered was a pack of P40 Warhawks and P51 Mustangs going in a tight pack around the pylons at full throttle. The intense sound of those WWII Merlins buzzing a few feet off the ground is jaw-dropping to say the least. Soon after the heat was over, I was off to the pits & display area where a Corsair, P38 Lightning, T-6 trainers, and restored vintage radial aircraft from the teens through the 50s were scattered about.

Don Thurston flies west from Letters from Flyover Country by Bob Collins
Of all the articles I've written over the years, I don't think any elicited as much response -- at least good response -- as this one. It was a short piece about some minor RV construction my father in law did a few years ago, made poignant because of his struggle with Parkinson's disease.
Don died this morning after a brutal last few months. Here's a tribute.
