ABC cancels toxic 'V' skywriting campaign - Adweek
Air-traffic controllers can breathe easier now that ABC has scrapped plans to promote V, its upcoming alien-invasion series, by skywriting giant V's above 26 popular U.S. landmarks. We can all breathe easier, actually, as a Washington Post columnist pointed out that the stunt would spew 800 grams of lead into the atmosphere. One of the proposed flyover sites, Boston's Fenway Park, is still recovering from all the hot air generated by fans about the Red Sox making it back to the World Series this year. The Statue of Liberty was also marked for a flyby, but New Yorkers wouldn't have noticed, because they're bedazzled by the post-season run of the soon-to-be world champion Yankees (Wednesday night's bump in the road notwithstanding). Unfortunately, we might still be in for some noxious emissions. If the "reimagined" V is anything like its stink-bomb '80s namesake, the stench will start to rise as soon as the series (for lack of a better word, and to stretch the metaphor to its very limit) airs. —Posted by David Gianatasio
Military aircraft collide off Calif. coast from Air Force Times - News
LOS ANGELES — The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy were searching for as many as nine people off the Southern California coast following a collision between a Coast Guard plane and a Marine Corps helicopter, officials said.A pilot reported seeing a fireball near where the aircraft collided, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said. The crash was reported at 7:10 p.m., about 50 miles off the San Diego County coast and 15 miles east of San Clemente Island, Coast Guard spokeswoman Petty Officer Allyson Conroy said.Cpl Michael Stevens, a spokesman for the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, confirmed an AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter had gone down, but he had no further information. He said it belonged to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing stationed at Camp Pendleton. The Coast Guard informed the FAA that debris from a C-130 had been spotted, Gregor said. Seven people were on board the C-130 and two people were aboard the helicopter, Gregor said. The C-130 is a long-range surveillance and transport, fixed-wing aircraft that is used to perform a variety of missions. The Coast Guard said it sent three cutters and diverted an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to the area to search for survivors, while the Navy sent four vessels and multiple helicopters.Earlier this week, it was an AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter that collided with a UH-1 helicopter over southern Afghanistan, killing four American troops and wounding two more, a Marine spokesman said.San Clemente Island is the southernmost of the eight Channel Islands located 68 nautical miles west of San Diego. The Navy has owned and trained at San Clemente Island since 1934, according to the island’s Web site. Naval Air Station, North Island is responsible for the island’s administration.

Air France to receive it's first Airbus A380 superjumbo today from Bangalore Aviation by Devesh Agarwal
In what is sure to be a lavish ceremony Toulouse, France head-quartered Airbus S.A.S. will deliver to French national airline Air France the carrier's first A380 superjumbo registration F-HPJA MSN033. The A380 features the new livery of Air France which was unveiled earlier this year, but F-HPJA will not be the first aircraft to wear the new livery. It was on Good Friday April 10th earlier this year that Air France took delivery of the 777th Boeing 777, in this case 300ER registration F-GZND, and the first aircraft to wear the new Air France livery. See the video here.

Video: Travis Pastrana backflips over a helicopter in Sydney by Diamond Pilots
Travis Pastrana has done a lot of cool motorcycle jumps in his day, but until now, he hadn’t jumped over a helicopter. The jump was a promotion for Nitro Circus, which will take place all over Australia in the coming weeks. Sure, that’s not the biggest jump in the world to make, but it’s still pretty dangerous. If there had been a bit of unanticipated turbulence, we’re watching Travis Pastrami.
