The Legend of Pancho Barnes / April, 2010

Well guess what just happened!  The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club was awarded "Best Documentary Film" at the Los Angeles Women's Film Festival last week.  It's a wonderful honor and we're just grinning from ear to ear about it, as we know Pancho'd be proud to be recognized at such a prestigious event.  (You can hear audio of editor Monique Zavistovski, director Amanda Pope and I from the festival at this link.)

Believe it or not, the award at the LAWFF was the third big award in as many festivals.  You may remember that the documentary received the Audience Award at the Big Muddy FF?  Well, we managed to follow that up with another Audience Award at the San Luis Obispo FF!  It's really meaningful to receive this kind of recognition because these awards are determined by votes not by judges, but by votes from people who watched the film.  Yes it is a popularity contest — and it's awesome that even with her dowdy looks, Pancho's been voted prom queen twice!

LOCAL AND NATIONAL AIR DATES LOOM
April may be "cruelest" but it is our month!  A broadcast version of Pancho will premiere on KOCE-TV, PBS of Orange County, on April 15 at 8 p.m. Additional screenings will follow on April 20th at 9 p.m. and April 25th at 11 p.m.  The program will then be shown all across the USA on over 100 participating stations (check your local listings for the exact time and date in your area).  You can also visit our website and click on "Screenings / National Broadcast" to find a list of most of the participating stations.  Want to help make our broadcast a big success?  Tell your friends about it, and tell anyone you know in local or national media, and join our Facebook fan group.  The more people we can make aware of this film, the better, and yes we are big believers in "word of mouth".  Don't see your station listed?  Call or email your local public television station manager and ask them to schedule the show!

LATEST PRODUCTION JOURNAL ENTRIES
SO LONG TO ONE OF THE LAST OF THE FIRST  I received sad news today, that aviatrix Elinor Smith had passed on at the age of 98.  Although I never got the chance to meet Elinor, I visited with her son Patrick Sullivan in early February at the San Francisco Airport Museum.  The occasion was a special screening of The Legend of Pancho, and Patrick came as a representative for his mother who was too frail to come herself.  One of the many highlights of the evening (and there were many) was having Patrick make a few remarks after the screening about his mother, Pancho, and Amelia Earhart.  TO READ THE REST OF THE ENTRY CLICK HERE AND SCROLL DOWN.

SHOOT OUT AT PANCHO'S AIRPORT
Today there's not much left of Pancho Barnes' airport — the barest outline of the runway can be seen on Google Earth.  But back when the Rancho Oro Verde was a going concern, it was a busy and eventful place.  The Barnes Airport hosted fly ins including an aerial treasure hunt, fleets of crop dusters hired to spray Pancho's and neighboring farms, and some interesting visitors including magician John Calvert who owned his own DC-3 (photo below).  (At one time Pancho's fourth husband Mack McKendry was Calvert's pilot.)  TO READ THE REST OF THE ENTRY CLICK HERE.
