Sun 'n Fun: The History of the Airshow by Josh Nederveld
(All information comes from either the Sun 'n Fun Web site, Wikipedia, or wild hearsay. I'm all about diversity.)
The first Sun 'n Fun was organized in 1974 by the Experimental Aircraft Association, which is a national organization of reformed barnstormers (or, more generously, a group of people who make their own airplanes).
Other organizations joined in, which formed an eclectic mix of sport aircraft and restored military planes that Sun 'n Fun is widely known for.
The first fly-in took place in 1975, in January. 365 planes attended. ...

The takeoff of The Flight for the Human Spirit is on a "weather hold" status until at least Thursday morning, according to Mission Control for the flight. "We've looked at the weather from every angle," said pilot Michael Combs, "but you don't have to look very far to know that it is too windy to fly."
The flight, designed to inspire people to pursue their dreams, was supposed to takeoff April 5 from Salina Municipal Airport (SLN) in Kansas, but that afternoon winds were blowing from a southwesterly direction at 20–28 knots with higher winds forecasted for Tuesday. Wednesday morning called for a chance of "wintery mix" conditions in the area between Salina and the destination of Columbia, Mo., for Flight Day #1. ...

Former B-17 navigator gets WWII medal from Air Force Times
KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — A World War II bomber's navigator, who saved a crewmate's life as their B-17 was going down over Berlin in 1944, has received an overdue Air Medal.
Administrative errors were blamed for the 66-year oversight, but 2nd Lt. Robert L. Giles finally received the award, which was presented Tuesday by Col. Fredrick Hartwig, commander of the New Mexico Air National Guard's 150th Fighter Wing.
The bomber was hit by cannon fire from a German fighter plane, disabling it and severely injuring the bombardier, Lt. Quintin Brown. Despite a wound to his own arm, Giles retrieved and secured harnesses for Brown and himself, then both parachuted to safety.
They were captured as prisoners of war.
Giles turns 89 on April 16. Brown died two years ago.

Rolls-Royce Hucknall re-visited 6/4/2010 by Gary Watson
Today, I had the chance to re-visit Rolls-Royce Hucknall and it's surrounding areas, without anyone 'chirping' in my ears, and see what it's like 'now-time', and to remember my 'youth' when I used to come to airshows held at Hucknall, and in later years, become a member of 1803 squadron ATC. In years gone by, I used to watch the airshows from the Bulwell golf course end of the airfield, instead of the Watnall road end of the airfield. Although ...

Video: More Power To The People - Remembering Leeon Davis by Martt [video]
Leeon Davis very quietly built some of the most unique and great performing homebuilt airplanes. Ever. He was all about simple, lightweight, and easy to build. His designs never really caught on like they should have, but somehow I don't think he even cared. He was too busy just being a really nice guy to worry about it. This video gives a great look at his last project, the 20hp Briggs and Stratton powered DA-11.
You can learn a lot more about Leeon's airplanes and design philosophy in this Budd Davisson article about the DA-2 originally written in 1973. Leeon Davis passed away in 2007.
