17 April 2010 - FINAL FLIGHT JAMES W. CALHOUN From Roadrunners Internationale
It is my sad duty to inform the Roadrunners of Groom Lake that James W. Calhoun took his final flight on 16 April 2010. Most of us knew Jim for his time spent at Groom Lake in June 1964 and a couple times in 1966 and 1967. Jim was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on 2 October 1924. He graduated from the University of Virginia in June 1948 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering - Aero Option. From July 1948 through August 1949 he worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft during which the very first version of the J-57 engine ran that summer. A redesign of the compressor was underway when he left to assume the position of Instructor UVA Aero courses from September 1949 through June 1950. From late December 1961 through September 1968 Jim worked as P&WA Fuel Controls Engineer and Assistant Project Engineer on the J-58 engine for the CIA's Mach 3 A-12 at Groom Lake during Project Oxcart. He spent three weeks at Groom Lake in June 1964 and a week or so in 1966 or 1967. The last trip was a final installation and flight test of the EGT Trimmer prior to its incorporation into the Bill of Material. Bill Park was the pilot. Early 1968 to Late 1984 he worked on F-100 Controls. Late 1984 through September 1987 he worked with Arnie Gunderson and Lockheed people on Speed Trim Flight Test and program support at Palmdale. Jim retired at end of September 1987. Several of the Roadrunners recall a great 3 days at Burbank during the J-58 reunion in 2004. Photos are posted at this link: http://roadrunnersinternationale.com/pratt_whitney/j58_reunion.html"> Funeral details will be posted as soon as known to us. More about James Calhoun. http://roadrunnersinternationale.com/calhoun.html
