Vance Air Force Base pilot ejects on runway, Air Force T-6A Texan II - VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. -- A pilot in an Air Force T-6A Texan II assigned to Vance AFB ejected from the aircraft just before 1 p.m. Friday at the south end of the base. The pilot was taken by ambulance to the Integris Bass Baptist Hospital in Enid and was treated and released. The aircraft is intact, sitting off of the end of the base's runway 17L, with gear extended in the mud. At the time of the ejection, the pilot was performing a solo training mission, meaning that the one pilot was the only person on board at the time of ejection, officials said.

B-58 Proves Supersonic Ejection To Be Bear-able In 1962 by Martt | The Convair B-58 originally went into service in 1960 with standard ejection seats, but the possibility of ejecting at supersonic speeds and at extreme high altitude meant the crewman stood little chance of surviving these extreme conditions. To deal with this situation, Convair worked with the Stanley Aircraft Corporation to develop an escape capsule. The capsule is shown in the pic above, and it was an extremely interesting piece of equipment that actually closed clamshell doors over the crewman and then pressurized the capsule before ejecting out of the aircraft…

from I Love Planes by Rafael | The Harrier Jump Jet is this week's fighter Friday plane. The Marines have nicknamed this plane the "widow maker" but not because of all the other people that it kills, but because the plane has a reputation of killing the pilot. Aviation Trivia of the Day by JP Santiago | It was tough going if you were assigned to one of the USAF Tactical Air Command's Troop Carrier Squadrons (TCS) in the 1950s. In the hierarchy of the day, the pilots and crews of the airlift squadrons picked up the still-used sobriquet of "trash-haulers" and while the airmen in the bomber and fighter squadrons flew advanced aircraft that were often the cutting edge of technology and performance. The bomber crews of the Strategic Air Command won the lion's share of the USAF budget in the name of nuclear deterrence and the fighters of the Tactical Air Command were setting world records for speed and altitude and carrying the latest in missile and radar equipment…
