Aerobatic Racing Challenge Series™ - Victory for Spencer Suderman at the 2010 MCAS Yuma Airshow

Victory for Spencer Suderman at the 2010 MCAS Yuma Airshow

Los Angeles, CA (April 2, 2010) – In a see-saw battle for the lead, Spencer Suderman edged out Bill Cornick to win Arizona’s first ARC Series™ race and season opener at the MCAS Yuma Airshow on March 27th, 2010.

Flown before the US Marine Corps, including their Commandant who flew in for the event, Suderman’s race strategy was to keep his sequence of aerobatic maneuvers clean and tight while flying his “Meteor” Pitts featuring its new Penn Yan Aero engine. Out-accelerating Cornick’s “Big Bad Green” Pitts  at the exit of many maneuvers, Spencer Suderman held on for the win as Cornick worked to catch up while cornering through a series of challenging aerobatics.

This thrilling ARC Series™ race, along with a host of military demonstrations and high-performance aircraft, capped a beautiful day at the MCAS Yuma Airshow bolstered by enthusiastic crowds which were fueled by Marine Corp hospitality and a supportive community.

Be sure to see Spencer and Bill along with other race pilots in a heated rematch at the Madera Air Show in central California on May 22 & 23, 2010.

ARC Series™ racing challenges all of their race pilots to strategically fly a sequence of maneuvers that will exploit the weaknesses of their opponent’s aircraft while maximizing their own plane’s advantages and flight characteristics.  Positioning their aircraft side-by-side as they battle for the lead, pilots must fly faster, corner harder, push the limits and pull more G-forces than their rivals.  The first aircraft to complete the entire sequence wins the race.

All of the ARC Series™ race pilots must use a keen mental instinct and raw flying skill to overtake their opponents during intricate maneuvers such as the Avalanche, Humpty-Bump, Hammerhead, and the thrilling Tailslide, a spectacle sure to keep the crowd on the edge of their seats!  Pilots make split second decisions to chase down their competitors in a three-dimensional racing environment, typically resulting in close “come-from-behind” finishes.

The International Federation of Aerobatic Racing (IFAR) is responsible for organizing, promoting, and sanctioning ARC Series™ brand racing.
