Museum commemorates 60th anniversary of Berlin Airlift from National Museum of the USAF
In September 1949, the world saw the end of a 464-day effort to supply a city's needs solely through the air. The National Museum of the United States Air Force will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the conclusion of the Berlin Airlift with permanent and special exhibits.
"Berlin: City Held Hostage" shows how the massive humanitarian effort known as the Berlin Airlift was an early triumph for the young U.S. Air Force and symbolized Western commitment to rebuilding democracy in Europe after World War II. This permanent exhibit is located in the connecting link to the museum's Cold War Gallery and explains how the newly formed USAF, along with other American services and British and French forces, delivered enough fuel, food and supplies to keep the city of Berlin going for nearly a year.
