200 Starlings Hitting Aircraft Engine on Take Off [Image Cache] from Gizmodo by Jesus Diaz
See those black bits scattered around this Boeing? It's just part of a massive flock of starlings hitting its fuselage and engine as it was taking off at 200mph. About two hundred birds were sucked into the turbine. According to the photographer, Juergen Kienast, the sound of the engine as it sucked the birds was defeaning: The pitch of the engine said it all. It was like sticking a bit of metal pipe into a blender. Unlike the
Hudson River Airbus, however, the crew and passengers got lucky: They didn't have to do any crash landing. The birds weren't that lucky, however, some splattering against the fuselage, others getting blended into a starling purée. Sad, but better them than the 80 people on board. [Daily Mail]

Cold War: Food for Berlin from About.com Military History
September 30, 1949 - The
Berlin Airlift (right) comes to an official end. Angered by disagreements with the Western Allies regarding Germany's future, Joseph Stalin cut off their ground access to West Berlin in late June 1948. Unwilling to abandon the city, American and British forces began a massive airlift effort on June 26 to deliver food and supplies to West Berlin's citizens. Operating through the winter and spring, the airlift would see a plane landing in Berlin every 30 seconds. By the end of April the amount being delivered by air exceeded pre-blockade ground shipments. Admitting defeat, the Soviets ended the blockade on May 12, 1949. The airlift continued until September 30 to build a surplus in the city. During its operations the Berlin Airlift transported 2,326,406 tons of supplies to the city. Share your thoughts and memories on this incredible operation.

One year we’ll get a gloriously sunny day! This set is just of the Red Arrows who were in attendance and were a very cool highlight. More to follow as I process through the week. Apologies for the layout of the post – can’t get slideshows to work at the moment, hopefully have it fixed before next post!
