Willow Run faces turbulent outlook - The Detroit News
Van Buren Township -- Willow Run airport is facing severe financial problems and officials are considering a number of cost-saving options, from leasing the facility to possibly closing it.
The airport's future essentially depends on how quickly the economy rebounds and whether Willow Run can hang on until then.
The air field, which caters to private charters and cargo operations, "continues to be a financial disaster," said Thomas Naughton, chief financial officer of the Wayne County Airport Authority. The agency operates Willow Run and the much larger Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus. more....

Mark Allan - CapeGazette.com
... Watching fighter jets vault off the carrier deck in great clouds of steam, Allan applied to the U.S. Naval Academy for the next four years.
He didn't get in.
Instead, he took classes whenever he could, attending night and weekend courses in his various ports of call. Meanwhile, he shot up the ladder, reaching the stratosphere of noncommissioned officer ranks. While stationed at Naval Air Station Patuxent in Maryland, he joined the flying club and got his private pilot's license.
He would be abandoning a promising career in naval surface warfare – "I was actually pretty good at the whole driving ships thing," he said – but he wanted to fly. He applied to Aviation Officer's Candidate School.
While serving aboard the USS Stark, Allan's commanding officer handed him an envelope. It was his acceptance to flight school at Pensacola, Fla.
He arrived in Florida on Super Bowl Sunday, 1985. Flight school breezed by. He graduated first in his class and was selected for an A-6 Intruder squadron in Oceana.
"I thought going fast and blowing things up would be pretty cool," Allan says in a wry deadpan.
Allan said the A-6 was like a muscle car – big, mean and straightforward. Like most aircraft of its generation, the A-6 was meant to penetrate deep into Soviet airspace and deliver a nuclear bomb via the "high loft" method – the pilot enters into a steep angle of attack, pulls up dramatically and then releases the bomb, sending it on a parabolic arc towards its target.

John Carmack's Armadillo Finally Wins Lunar Landing Challenge [Space] via Gizmodo
After crashing the last time, Armadillo Aerospace won the $1,000,000 Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge this Saturday. Needless to say, Doom-creator, Armadillo's head, and überspacenerd John Carmack was veehee happy:
Since the Lunar Lander Challenge is quite demanding in terms of performance, with a few tweaks our Scorpius vehicle actually has the capability to travel all the way to space. We'll be moving quickly to do higher-altitude tests, and we can go up to about 6000 feet here at our home base in Texas before we'll have to head to New Mexico where we can really push the envelope. We already have scientific payloads from universities lined up to fly as well, so this will be an exciting next few months for commercial spaceflight.
Scorpius was able to complete the challenge, flying the 180 seconds required to escape from the Moon's surface and reach lunar orbit. [Space.com]
