Europe Trip #6: RAF Museum Hendon - 1 - Introduction from Rodney's Aviation Ramblings
Well, I'm back home in New Zealand now, and with the lasting effects of long distance travel almost gone, it's time to catch up on the photos form the trip.
This post is the first in a series of photos taken at the RAF Museum in Hendon. As you'll see over the next few days as I put the posts up, there's was plenty here to keep me amused for the 5-6 hours I was there, and in fact it would have been better to spend a couple of days so that I didn't have to rush between some of the exhibits! After all my looking around, I didn't even get in to the hanger containing many of the WW1 exhibits which is a shame. ...

XB-70A Valkyrie from Air Force Link Top Stories
On Sept. 21, 1964, at Palmdale, Calif., a B-70A Valkyrie flew for the first time, with company pilot Alvin White and Col. Joseph Cotton at the controls. The huge delta-wing aircraft was a strategic bomber that could fly up to three times the speed of sound and at altitudes above 70,000 feet, but advances in enemy surface-face-to-air-missile technology prevented its production beyond the prototype stage. The manufacturer was North American Aviation.
Two XB-70 prototypes were built for the U.S. Air Force, but the program was cancelled in 1961. The XB-70A aircraft were used in supersonic test flights from 1964 to 1969, performing research for the design of large supersonic aircraft. One such test on Oct. 14, 1965, with White and Cotton at the controls, the No. 1 XB-70 accelerated to a speed of Mach 3.02 at 70,000 feet and achieved the design speed for the mammoth, 500,000-pound prototype long-range bomber for the first time. In doing so, it became the first (and only) bomber-type aircraft to come close to triple-sonic speeds.
