IMPACT OF SEQUESTRATION ON AIR SHOW COMMUNITY via Kyle Franklin | As reported in the last issue of Fast Facts, contingency planning by the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army and Marine Corps calls for a complete end to all non-essential flying – including air show performances – if sequestration cuts are implemented. ICAS has learned that, if the March 1 deadline is not averted, the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds and single-ship tactical demonstration teams will continue to prepare for the 2013 air show season through March 31. If the situation has not been corrected by then, all preparation will cease and the teams will stop flying on April 1. In addition to an abrupt end to air show performances, the military will also stop supporting air shows with static display aircraft. Although specific details about air shows and open houses held on military bases have not been shared, it is likely that these events will also be cancelled. Longtime ICAS member and air show performer Bill Reesman passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 15 near his home in southern California. Details on the cause of his death are not available.

FOUNDATION SEEKS HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS

The ICAS Foundation is seeking nominations for its Air Show Hall of Fame. New inductees will be recognized during the 2011 ICAS Convention, December 4-7 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Air Show Hall of Fame was established in 1995 to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the air show industry and to help educate the air show community about the history of the air show business. Past inductees include Bob Hoover, Lincoln Beachey, Paul Poberezny, Leo Loudenslager, Duane Cole, Curtis Pitts, Jimmy Franklin, Charlie Hillard, and Bill Sweet.

Nominees from all segments of the air show community may be recommended to the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Closing date for nominating a candidate is July 1, 2011.

MOHR TO BE INDUCTED INTO MINNESOTA AVIATION HALL OF FAME

ICAS member and longtime air show performer John Mohr will be inducted into the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 30 at a ceremony in Bloomington, Minnesota. In addition to his 35+ year air show career, Mohr is being recognized for his experiences as an airline pilot, helicopter pilot, ambulance flight pilot and floatplane pilot.

Begun in 1988, the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame now includes more than 160 aviation professionals, including Charles Lindbergh, Marvin Northrup, and Leo Thorsness.

ICAS SURVEY INDICATES AIR SHOW TICKET PRICES HAVE INCREASED

A just completed survey of ICAS event organizers indicates that air show admission ticket prices have increased significantly since members were last surveyed in the spring of 2008.

Based on the responses of more than 100 event organizers, the average (mean) cost of an adult admission ticket purchased at the gate in 2011 will be $19.07 (vs. $13.98 in 2008). The median price for an adult, on-site ticket will be $20.00. The mean average price for an advanced purchased, adult ticket during the 2011 air show season will be $15.33 (vs. $12.03 in 2008) with a median price of $15.00.

"Based on this survey and anecdotal information that has been coming in during the last eighteen months, it appears that air show event organizers now recognize that admission prices have been too low for many years," says ICAS President John Cudahy. "Average adult ticket prices are now approaching $20 and there are a number of shows charging $25 per day."

By comparison, the average ticket price for an NFL football game in 2010 was $76.47 and a National Hockey League game ticket averaged $54.25. The average cost of a one-day admission ticket to a destination amusement park like Disney or Universal Studios was $72.72 and regional amusement park adult ticket prices were $44.20 per day.

"Even with the recent increase in average ticket prices, air shows are still a bargain as compared to virtually any other entertainment options," says Cudahy.

Ticket prices for seniors and children attending air shows in 2011 have shown similar increases with on-site senior tickets selling for an average of $16.89 in 2011 (vs. $11.74 in 2008) and children's tickets averaging $8.44 this year (vs. $6.10 in 2008).

NEW SMYRNA WELCOMES BIG CROWDS, RAISES BIG BUCKS

For the first time ever, organizers of the New Smyrna Beach Balloon and Skyfest secured an aerobatic box for their event to allow aerobatic performances during their air show on April 9 and 10. Combined with picture-perfect weather, that addition helped attract record crowds to this event on the east coast of central Florida.

The show would have been the fourth show of the season for Kyle and Amanda Franklin. Although their accident in Brownsville, Texas in mid-March kept them from being there, Kyle and Amanda were on the minds of sponsors, volunteers and performers on hand for the traditional Saturday night sponsor appreciation dinner. They raised more than $4,000 for the Kyle and Amanda Fund and issued a challenge for every air show in North America to make a similar effort during their air show weekend this year.

AIR SHOW COMMUNITY PLANS BENEFIT AIR SHOW FOR FRANKLINS

A group of air show professionals have announced their plans for an air show to benefit Kyle and Amanda Franklin. Modeled after a similar air show held in April of 2009 to help defray the medical expenses of Alan Henley, the First Annual Western States Aviation Round-Up and Air Show will be held on August 27 and 28 at the Minden-Tahoe Airport in Minden, Nevada. Air show performers and other air show professionals are already volunteering their services as part of this fundraising effort.

AMANDA UPDATE

Amanda Franklin continues to make slow, but steady progress in her recovery from the injuries she sustained in the March 12 accident in which she and her husband, Kyle, were involved on March 12 in Brownsville, Texas. Although Amanda suffered multiple broken bones, including her neck and back, her burn injuries were the most serious and are the biggest challenge to her ongoing recovery efforts. It now appears that she will be in San Antonio's Brooke Army Medical Center for at least the next several months.

Analysis of the Franklin's Waco biplane suggests a problem with a fuel servo that regulates fuel flow to the aircraft's Pratt & Whitney R-985 engine.

CPSC ISSUES WARNING ON WATER WALKING BALLS

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a warning to consumers to stop using water walking balls due to the potential risks of suffocation and drowning.

An amusement attraction at many outdoor festivals, including air shows, water walking balls are very large (7 feet or more in diameter) see-through plastic balls. Customers step into the balls and then an air tight zipper is closed behind them. The ball, with the person inside, then rolls around in a pool of water.

The CPSC has found that, because the product has no emergency exit and can be opened only by a person outside of the ball, there is significant risk of injury or death when a person inside the ball experiences distress. The CPSC also found that pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart, lung, or breathing issues, can be made worse by use of this product. CPSC has also said that it does not know of any safe way to use this product.  For more information on this CPSC alert, click here.

WALKER DIES IN ACCIDENT

Bill Walker, a member of the Red Thunder Air Show Team, was killed on Saturday, March 26 at the Flagler Warbird Fly-In Show in Flagler, Florida when his Yak-52 failed to recover from a descending vertical maneuver. No one else in the air or on the ground was involved in the accident. The FAA is conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident.

DRISKELL PASSES

Jim Driskell, best known as the announcer for air show legend Bob Hoover for a quarter century, passed away on Thursday, March 17 at the age of 94. Driskell had been battling a number of medical complications related to a fall that he had in mid-December.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 5 at St. Jerome Church, 5550 Thornbury Street, Los Angeles, California 90045.  In lieu of flowers, Jimmy’s family has asked that contributions be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 3090 N. 12^th Street, Unit B, Grand Junction, Colorado.

FUNDRAISING FOR AMANDA AND KYLE

During the Thunder in the Valley Air Show last weekend in Columbus, Georgia, announcer Hugh Oldham and air boss George Cline used the sponsor appreciation dinner as an opportunity to solicit contributions to the Kyle and Amanda Fund recently established by the ICAS Foundation. The duo’s pitch was low key and had received the approval of air show management.

“It was a pass-the-hat-type of appeal. We explained the challenges that Amanda and Kyle would be facing and asked the folks present at the dinner to contribute what they could,” said Oldham. In the end, the solicitation generated $2,400, every penny of which will go directly to the Franklins to defray some of the medical and logistical expenses they will incur as they both continue to recover from their accident two weeks ago in Brownsville, Texas.

Might this approach work at your show? Think about it and, if appropriate, consider making a similar appeal. Together, we can make a significant impact on the financial challenges that these two members of our air show family will be facing in the coming weeks and months.

CANADA REMEMBERS RE-LAUNCHES AS FESTIVAL FOR HEROES

In 2009, when the Canada Remembers International Air Show stopped being held at the Saskatoon Airport in Saskatchewan due to construction and space limitations, its organizers did not abandon their efforts to organize and conduct an annual air show that recognizes Canada’s veterans. But they did have to get a bit creative.

And the product of that ingenuity was revealed earlier this month when they announced that the show was being reintroduced as the Canada Remembers International Festival for Heroes, scheduled for August 6 and 7 at the Auto Clearing Motor Speedway.  The new venue and format will include the traditional air show and tribute to veterans, as well as a new event entitled, “Canada’s National Concert for the Troops.”

BLUES TO PERFORM AT LYNCHBURG SHOW

The Lynchburg Regional Air Show, scheduled for May 21 and 22 in Lynchburg, Virginia, will feature the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. According to John Barksdale, the event’s executive director, when the team had a last-minute schedule conflict, the show agreed to step in and host the team.

HILL AFB PUSHES TO 2012

Citing unexpected budget shortfalls, the organizers of the Hill Air Force Base Air Show, originally scheduled for September 24-25, 2011 in Ogden, Utah, have announced that the show will be rescheduled for 2012.

KLATT ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH DARNELL

John Klatt Airshows recently signed an agreement with Darnell Racing Enterprises to add Neal Darnell’s Flash Fire Jet truck to a nationwide schedule of air show performances. Initial plans call for the aircraft and truck to perform at twelve air shows together during the 2011 air show season. In addition to entertaining air show audiences throughout the U.S., the Air National Guard Max Adrenaline Tour will create awareness, education and enthusiasm for the Air National Guard.

WERTH JOINS RED EAGLE AIR SHOW TEAM

ICAS member and air show performer Billy Werth has joined the Red Eagle Air Show team as its new opposing solo pilot following the departure of Buck Roetman from the team. Werth will appear in approximately ten shows with the Red Eagle Air Show team during the 2011 air show season. In addition to his work as an air show pilot, Werth is a captain with a major airline and a major and instructor pilot with the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

KOONTZ RECEIVES 2011 CFI OF THE YEAR AWARD

During an AOPA Safety Seminar on March 22 in Birmingham, Alabama, air show performer, ACE Committee Chairman and ICAS member Greg Koontz was named Flight Instructor of the Year for Alabama and northwest Florida. Presented as part of a larger general aviation awards program, the award was presented by the Alabama/northwest Florida FAA Safety Team.

Paul “Max” Moga was the U.S. Air Force’s F-22 demo pilot during the 2007 and 2008 air show seasons. Early in that tour, he did an interview in which he explained some of the demands and intricacies of performing the air show sequence in this fifth-generation fighter. Since then, the Raptor demonstration has entertained and amazed millions. Although the interview is now nearly four years old, it’s still relevant, insightful and interesting.
