AAF Station 131 Nuthampstead UK from 8th Rememberance by WireFox
If your in the Royston area looking for signs of 8th Air Force action, then go up the A10 from Royston for around 5 miles out, you will see it sign-posted for Nuthampstead. This still active former USAAF airfield was once the welcoming home of the 55 Fighter Group and also later on, the 398th Bombardment Group (Heavy) with their B-17 bombers. There are a lot of signs of the wartime use of this airfield all around the site. Old taxi-ways can be seen very easy, and the long, part-grassed runways can still be made out. An air traffic control building is right on the former main runway and is still in use today. Old out buildings are to be seen also here and there, and like Steeple Morden, sadly no tower remains ...
AAF Station 122 Steeple Morden UK from 8th Rememberance by WireFox
If you travel along the A505 from Royston to the A1(M) road with the electrified railway-line on the right-hand side of you, you will soon see a cross-over junction to the right marked Steeple Morden. Take care at this junction for you must judge a 'gap' in the on-coming traffic well. Once you have made the turn, carry on past the 'Jester' public house/hotel, over the railway-crossing until you come to the small village of Steeple Morden. When you see the church on the left as you come into the village, turn right into Cheney Lane. Go past the village name-post for about a mile if that, and you will come across the memorial wall erected by we British with the blessing of the 355th Fighter Association. Wonderful Mustang memorial is there for all to see, and on that please show respect and close the entrance gate behind you. Apart from the three white painted 'nissen' huts there is very little left building-wise. Although there are signs of taxi-ways still to be seen. There is a airfield plan at the site of the memorial so you can get an idea of the scale of the airfield. Long gone are the sounds of P-47s and P-51s around the area, exept on a second saturday and sunday of the month of July, when aircraft from the 'Flying Legends' airshow may be seen in the distance. 8th Rememberance visited the memorial to place a floral tribute on this day 8-3-09 with the wind howling on that sunny but very cold March day.
This floral tribute was made to say thanks to the efforts of the group and other outfits on the base during the war, but more important, for the 'Fallen' and the Missing out there wherever they may lay. ...

Polmar on the C-130 from Defense Tech by lowe
There should be an expression, "Build a better airplane, and people will fly it." Today the "better" airplane in the medium-range/lift category is the same airplane that has held that spot for a half century-the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules. In continuous production since 1954, the "Herc" has enjoyed the longest production run of any airplane in history with almost 60 nations currently flying the aircraft. ..
