Indy Transponder 23-JUN-10 1030z

Ladies….start your engines… « Warrior Women take on the Air Race Classic 2010 from warriorwomen2010.wordpress.com | Before the sun had a chance to get up, Heather and I were already at our computers checking weather and making final plans for our first flight from Ft. Myers, FL to Waycross, GA.  Downstairs, 100+ women were gathering for breakfast and a final weather briefing before heading to the airport and to our planes.  Baggage was put on board, preflight's were completed, well-wishes were made to the other teams before getting into the plane…

The Racers are off!! from airrace.aviation.siuc.edu | Today's agenda included Air Racer Breakfast at 6am follow by an all contestant weather briefing. The aircraft were to be started at 8am in groups of 5. First stop Waycross, GA. We are going to miss Fort Myers but we are all ready to race. Thanks to Gary Duncan the Director of Aviation for the Lee County Port Authority! He is a fellow saluki that made a special trip to each of the SIU aircraft today to wish us luck. Now that is Saluki pride. The best part was when we all put our hands in and yelled goooo salukis!

See SPOT run « Warrior Women take on the Air Race Classic 2010 from warriorwomen2010.wordpress.com | For those of you who were following along on Tuesday watching our live SPOT map….you may have noticed an awful lot of back and forth in a very small area around Waycross, GA.  No….Heather did not lose her mind and taxi Bravoski all over the ramp!...

The Saluki Racers are in Hot Springs for the Evening!! from airrace.aviation.siuc.edu | All the racers were off to Waycross, GA and we all made it there in great timing. When we arrived in Waycross there were many people there to greet us. We had little kids and even adults asking for our autographs. It was a really cool experience. We felt like royalty. In the FBO we paid for fuel and they had BBQ sandwiches waiting for us. Along with sandwiches they had popcorn, soda, chips, and other goodies. Thank you Waycross for the your hospitality, it was greatly appreciated…

Team Charley: Race Day from teamcharley.blogspot.com | We were up at 5am this morning, had breakfast at 6am, weather briefing at 6:30 and were at the airport by 7am. Loaded up the airplane and were off at 8am. We had a good flight from Ft Myers to Waycross, GA, our first stop. We were met there by volunteers with sodas, water and barbeque sandwiches. Then we were off to our second stop in Tuscaloosa, AL. Tuscaloosa is a towered airport, so it took much longer to get out of there. There were planes coming in for their timing run, flying the pattern, and flying their timing runs to depart for the next stop. Our third stop for the day was Hot Springs, AR. By the time we left Tuscaloosa, it was…

Down…but not out. « Warrior Women take on the Air Race Classic 2010 from warriorwomen2010.wordpress.com | We thought we were off.  We weren't. We had trouble getting the plane to start.  We tried a hot start (which means we didn't prime the engine at all.) Nope.  We tried a few shots of prime. Nope again.  We tried several combinations of full rich / lean / pumping the throttle / opening the throttle /closing it down.  Nope, nope, nope.  We waited for her to cool down…. (though it was high noon and close to 100 degrees…so I'm not sure we were going to see that happen.)  Still nothing. We notified the Stop Chairperson that we needed a mechanic to help, and he was able to get the plane started.  However… he listened to her at full throttle and then back at idle and he did not like what he was seeing and hearing at idle.  The plane was developing very little rpm – much lower than usual – when the throttle was pulled back.  We shut her down, and he took another look.  Turns out there is a leaky gasket that needs to be replaced..the part is inexpensive….but it…

Day 1 from Snow Eagles Air Racing Team by snoweaglesracingteam | Made it to Cameron, MO today. We flew through Waycross, GA, Tulcaloosa, Hot Springs then Cameron. They people in Cameron wereso nice--they brought strawberries and sparkling cider to the side of our plane right after we parked! It was a SCORCHER! As soon as I walked out this morning, it was uggy and very hot!!! I was sweating immediately! However, it was fun! All 51 teams took off around 8am. It was cool tosee the line of planes. I sat front seat first, then Nikki switched. Suzanne was flying the plane; we were assisting with approaches/flybys, briefing, etc. It was intense! Our top speed for the day was 200kph! Its such a fast plane….

First day of racing from Snow Eagles Air Racing Team by snoweaglesracingteam | We took off about 838 am EDT. We flew by Waycross, and stopped at Tuscaloosa AL for fuel. We took off again and flew by Hot Springs AR, and made our final stop for the night in Cameron, Missouri. Everyone is exhausted as most of us got up at 445 AM EDT, which is 345 AM Central Daylight Time. Suzanne flew the plane, and Sara and I helped with spotting traffic, and navigation. Some places were harry with the traffic. The racers did a good job communicating where we were at,so now one crashed. All planes have made it safely to a RON spot. RON means Remain Over Night designation, and those are the 8 spots that we have to do a fly-by. All racers must be at a RON spot by the end of the Air Race Classic sunset time…

CoolPix - Airshow: Inside Matt Younkin's Twin Beech by Martt - Sure, this CoolPix would more interesting if it was taken when Matt Younkin was sitting up front and the airplane was upside-down like the pic below, but first I'd have to figure out how to get that picture! I still think it's pretty sweet taking a look inside the beautiful ole Twin Beech that Matt does his fabulous airshows in. I got the pic recently at the Indy Air Show. I had never seen inside his airplane before, and I was a little surprised by how nicely it's finished off. That gorgeous headliner kinda seals the deal for me... really helps to give it that golden-age-of-aviation feel. I was also pleased with the way the pic turned out since I wasn't actually inside the airplane. I just held the camera inside and had the self-timer set so I could try to get things centered and framed well. It's almost right down the middle!...
