Evans Head comes alive - Northern Rivers News
THE GREAT Eastern Fly-In brought the skies over Evans Head to life on the weekend as hundreds of aircraft descended upon the town providing joy flights, breathtaking stunt flying and static air displays.
Co-ordinator Gai Taylor was flush with gratitude and joy yesterday afternoon as she took stock of the event.
"It was absolutely brilliant," she declared.
"The weather was fabulous, aircraft were amazing and the crowds were huge. We had about 10,000 here over the weekend.
"This place is truly unique. There's no aerodrome like it on the east coast.

L.A. air show in 1910 awed a nation by TheKathrynReport
The event, which celebrates its centennial Sunday, ushered in the aviation industry.
One hundred years ago, "few Americans had seen an airplane, let alone an air race," Air & Space magazine recently noted. The flying machines were considered the toys of eccentric grown-ups who, in the words of one historian, enjoyed a professional status comparable to "contortionists, dog trainers, organ-grinders and wire-walkers." Dominguez Rancho Adobe to mark anniversary of 1910 air meet from Diamond Pilots
French pilot Louis Paulhan had a reputation as quite an aviation daredevil during the early part of the last century. While manning a Farman biplane during a visit to the South Bay in 1910, Paulhan buzzed past the Los Angeles Harbor, the hills of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the Point Fermin Lighthouse, becoming the first pilot to fly over the Pacific Ocean. While Paulhan's stunt may be considered mundane by today's standards of commercial air travel and double-decked jetliners, the death-defying feat was considered a milestone 100 years ago during the Los Angeles International Aviation Meet. A mix of ancient and modern - Northern Rivers News
HONG KONG-based commercial Airbus pilot Frank D'Altoro belongs to a group of enthusiasts who flew in two vintage aircraft from Caboolture, Queensland, to the Great Eastern Fly-In – a CA25 Winjeel trainer and a CA18 Mustang ex-WWII fighter.
"I can't help myself," he laughed.
"I'm one of those guys who does it for a job and as a hobby on my days off.
"There's so much history here. We put in the effort to support the fly-in and the airstrip."
Former Battle of Britain Spitfire pilot Ted Sly had a tear in his eye as he soaked up the classic aircraft coming and going.
"I flew four campaigns in England, Malta, the Western Desert and the Pacific during the war and people don't realise the price we paid for our freedom today. Our contribution was huge – 45 per cent of bomber casualties were Australian. My job is to remind people." ...
Tower still waiting on repairs from Diamond Pilots
Back in October 2008, the Pacific Aviation Museum-Pearl Harbor was hoping to sign a lease with the Navy by the end of that year to take over and start renovating the iconic red- and white-striped aircraft control tower that stands next to the museum on Ford Island. That didn't happen. Nearly a year later, in September 2009, the museum was hopeful for a lease by the end of '09. Still no lease. ...
Last Shootdown from Neptunus Lex
Just ran across an interesting anecdote in the November Pacific Flyer that I just had to share: It turns out that the last German plane to be officially shot down in the ETO was a Fieseler Storch.
The Storch was an unarmed reconnaissance and utility aircraft with exceptional short field capabilities. Bernard Montgomery acquired a captured aircraft for his own personal transport. ...

Connell: Tales of flying with Blair and Lindbergh from Diamond Pilots
"Six years ago, while wondering what was keeping our plane on the ground at the airport in Bermuda, my wife and I noticed a line of luxury sedans and police cruisers rolling down the runway. We watched a slim man emerge from a Rolls and shake hands with well-dressed folks who poured out of the trailing vehicles. "Do you know who that is?" I asked my wife, unable to conceal my amazement. "That's Tony Blair." This sense of astonishment only grew as we watched the British prime minister board our aircraft, a regularly scheduled Continental Airlines flight to Newark, N.J. He and a handful of aides and bodyguards took over the first-class cabin..." (Continued ... Read More)

Profile 39 - B-25H S/N 43-4267 from WWII Fighter Plane Profiles
The sketch above is pencil-work of my latest - a North American B-25 Mitchell bomber. Casual history buffs will recognize the twin-fin tail and probably recall snapping a few photos of a shiny silver example at an air show. But the real airplane nuts will recognize immediately that this example is the "H" model, probably the most heavily armed aircraft of WW2. This one's no gleaming queen but a dark witch of Hell. I get a shiver just thinking about it...
Dayton Ohio Aviation Trail #1: Aviation Trail and Museum Center from You Fly, Girl
I visited Dayton, Ohio, last year, and visited a few sites on the Aviation Trail. And when I track down my photos - they are somewhere on either my laptop or a loose memory chip, I'll share them here.
The Wright Brothers are claimed by two different state's aviation history. Kitty Hawk in North Carolina makes a big deal out of the Wright Brothers, who experimented with their gliders from 1900 to 1902, and flew the first powered flight in 1903 from Kill Devil Hills. After that, however, the brothers did the rest of their experimenting and perfecting at Huffman Prairie in Dayton, Ohio. ...

Opinion: Column - Michael Grauer: Let's 'dance' with aviation tradition from www.amarillo.com
... With all due respect to South Plains Army Airfield, the Amarillo Army Airfield story is far richer, deeper, more varied, and much, much cooler. Heck, we had bombers from the B-17 through the B-52 out there. We had one of the largest ground crew and aircraft mechanic training facilities in the world out there. We were part of the Strategic Air Command! Our aviation story is unique in Texas and the United States and can only be told properly at English Field.
Moreover, had your columnists visited the American Airpower Heritage Museum at Midland, they would have seen that integral to their exhibit mission is an open-storage hangar in which occurs the restoration of, what you called, an aircraft "in dilapidated condition and unfit for display." I (and I would wager the members of the Commemorative Air Force, too) beg to differ with your dismissive stand on these "old veterans." This is part of the attraction of the AAHM and any aviation history museum.
I have visited the AAHM many times ...
