Vulcan's future "at risk" - Key Aero
In the latest update on the appeal to keep Vulcan B2 XH558/G-VLCN flying, Vulcan to the Sky Trust Chief Executive Robert Pleming says that "the situation remains dire".
Work on the winter overhaul of XH558 has already begun by Marshall Aerospace at its temporary home of RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire, but Pleming says the Trust has only enough funds to cover the next five weeks – this may force redundancy notices to be issued at the beginning of February.
So far just over £180,000 has been raised, but £800,000 is needed to guarantee a 2010 display season. Pleming says ...

Planespotter: An Aviation Mystery in Hanoi by Telstar Logistics
Earlier this week, shutterbug Reid Yalom contacted Telstar Logistics to seek help identifying an unusual aircraft he photographed (shown above) during a recent trip to Hanoi, Vietnam.
Frankly, we were stumped. Yet several things about the aircraft's configuration seemed noteworthy: A single, nose-mounted engine, the biplane wing, and a large passenger cabin. Yalom suspected the plane might be French. "No idea," we replied, adding that "it might be Russian or Chinese."
Turns out, we were in the ballpark. Telstar Logistics Senior Taxonomist Fred Sharples quickly came though with information about the aircraft, positively identifying it as a Russian-designed Antonov AN-2. ...

COOL VIDEO: P-38 training films, about 1943 from The DEW Line
In honor of my visit later this week to Lockheed Martin's F-35/F-16 factory in Fort Worth, I am showing one of the coolest videos I've seen in a while. It's a training film from 1943 on the P-38's flight characteristics. I think I enjoyed watching this one more than even the spectacular Saab Draken promotional video from the early 1950s, which I posted here earlier. This one is pure 1940s-infomercial goodness.
