Lee Bottom Fly In via Pilots of America Message Board by OH Flier on 9/28/08
Yesterday I made it to the now famous Lee Bottom Fly In, on the Ohio -Indiana border. In late September, for one weekend, this little grass strip becomes the center of the antique, tail dragger, fabric cover aircraft world. It's a casual, camp with your airplane, grass roots event that continues to grow in popularity.
No airshow or military displays. Just a group of people that love old airplanes and work hard to keep them flying. [photos]

Air show Oct. 1 in Douglas, Arizona from air-show « WordPress.com Tag Feed by tourcochisecounty

Save the date! I just heard that there's going to be another free air show in Douglas. In March, their Border to Border air show was a fun day of pilots doing acrobatics.

In October, the Canadian Snowbirds will come to Douglas to perform. it's a great excuse to take a vacation day from work (it's on a Wednesday) and see some cool stuff! From their Web site:

The Snowbirds Demonstration Team is a Canadian icon. It's comprised of serving members of the Canadian Forces. Their pilots and technicians work as a team to bring thrilling performances to the public. As Canadian ambassadors, the Snowbirds demonstrate the high level of professionalism, teamwork, excellence, discipline and dedication inherent in the women and men of the Air Force and the Canadian Forces.

Here are graphics of some of the formations they do. Pretty cool when you think about the speed they fly and how close they are to each other. If you think it's tough not to bump into people when line dancing, imagine controlling an airplane at 115-370 mph!

I don't know the time of the show just yet, but it should be worth the trip. Check back for more info!

Pacific Coast Air Museum Receives Air Force Museum Certification

The Pacific Coast Air Museum, located at the Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, CA, has been awarded full certification by the National Museum of the United States Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.

This prestigious certification is the result of a rigorous two and one-half year process culminating in an on-site inspection of the Pacific Coast Air Museum by the Air Force Museum staff.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force (Air Force Museum), in addition to its own heralded aviation collection in Dayton, Ohio, manages nearly 33,000 items on loan to field museums and domestic and international heritage sites. It also manages more than 6,400 historical artifacts and aerospace vehicles on loan to 454 civilian museums, cities, municipalities and veterans' organizations throughout the world. Only 103 private civilian Air Museums such as the Pacific Coast Air Museum have ever received certification from the Air Force Museum.

The certification means that the Pacific Coast Air Museum has been judged to have achieved the highest professional standards outlined by the American Association of Museums.

According to Dave Pinsky, Executive Director of the Pacific Coast Air Museum, the Air Force Museum staff commented that the Pacific Coast Air Museum’s aircraft collection was amongst “the best restored and best maintained aircraft collection they had ever seen in a private Air Museum”.

In addition to being a prestigious certification recognizing the Pacific Coast Air Museum as achieving high professional standards, the Air Force Museum certification means that the Pacific Coast Air Museum is eligible to receive Air Force Museum aircraft and artifacts on loan from the Air Force Museum. According to Executive Director Dave Pinsky, the museum staff is working on the loan of several artifacts to augment the SR-71 Blackbird display at the museum, an aircraft Pinsky flew while in the Air Force.

The Pacific Coast Air Museum restores, maintains and displays historic aircraft, preserves and displays Sonoma County aviation history, and provides an educational venue for the community, especially for schoolchildren.

The Pacific Coast Air Museum also produces the annual two day “Wings Over Wine Country” Air Show on the third weekend of August each year.

ANDERS, BORMAN TO LAUNCH 2008 ICAS CONVENTION – ICAShq.org
On December 21, 1968, astronauts Frank Borman, Bill Anders and Jim Lovell blasted off from Kennedy Space Center for a six-day mission to the moon. After a three-day trip, they orbited the moon 20 times and made a memorable Christmas Eve television broadcast in which they read ten verses from the Book of Genesis. The crew also witnessed and photographed an event no one had ever seen: an earthrise as Earth appeared from behind the moon as the crew orbited. Their historic mission fundamentally changed the way we think about our planet and paved the way for the Apollo 11 mission and moon landing seven months later. For our keynote presentation on the morning of Tuesday, December 9, Major General Bill Anders (USAF, retired) and Colonel Frank Borman (USAF, retired) will give us a behind-the-curtains look at that historic Apollo 8 mission, just a few days before the 40th anniversary of their trip.

This (very) late 1930’s American smallish short/medium-haul airline transport has long attracted my interest for several reasons. It was placed into production with airline orders growing, but its future was abruptly cut short by the outbreak of World War Two after only 12 had been delivered. It was decided that maximum effort should be dedicated to the mass production of other transport types urgently required for use by the allied forces of several countries. For example; Douglas C-47, Douglas C-54 and Curtiss C-46.

Lee Bottom Flying Field will once again bring back the good old days.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Contact: Lee Bottom Flying Field
7296 S. River Bottom Rd.
Hanover, IN 47243
812-866-3211
info@LeeBottom.com

Hanover, IN, September 23, 2008 – Lee Bottom Flying Field will once again bring back the good old days by hosting the Wood, Fabric, & Tailwheels Fly-In. This event was created to offer simple, old- fashioned fun for pilots who were tired of modern, over commercialized gatherings.

The 12th Annual Wood, Fabric, & Tailwheels Event, will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2008 with activities occurring throughout the weekend. The organizers are expecting to attract another record gathering of aircraft from all corners of the United States and people from around the world.

At the close of last year’s event, 425 aircraft and 2000 people had visited the field during the weekend. Registrations included people and or planes from Alaska, California, Florida, and Vermont with Canada, England, Australia, and South Africa also represented. Among the people present were members of nearly every aviation group in existence and the aircraft parked amongst the rows were just as varied with antique, vintage, classic, warbird, rotor, experimental, seaplane, motor-glider, transport, and ultralight aircraft parked side by side as one big family.

The owners of Lee Bottom Flying Field, Rich and Ginger Davidson, have very clear ideas as to what makes this event so popular. When asked why they believe their event has developed such a devoted following, Ginger said, “That’s easy; the attendees are the event. We supply the venue, and they show up to have fun.” We say "It's the most nothing you'll ever do". There are no schedules, no programs, and no expectations. People show up, look at airplanes, talk to other pilots, hang out, eat lunch (around noon), then do more of the same. Everyone gets out of it what they want.

Although it is a fly-in, more and more people are inclined to drive to the event to witness the migration of planes to an airport that has become known as a refuge for “grass roots aviation”. Tickets are now available for purchase on-line from the airport’s website (
http://www.leebottom.com/). This new advanced purchase feature will allow those planning to drive to the event to be sure that they have a ticket as the venue will be limited to the first 750 general admission (drive-in) gate attendees who purchase tickets. The cost for the event is $10 per person with children 12 and under being free. The admission price will allow entry to the field throughout the weekend with the general admission gates being open Friday (9/26) 4PM – 7PM, Saturday (9/27) 8AM – 5PM, and Sunday (9/28) 10AM – 12PM.

Lee Bottom Flying Field is a privately owned, public use, grass runway airport that has been in operation since the late 1930’s. Through the years, it has been a stop for barnstormers, a crop duster field, salvage yard, and a popular get-a-way spot for aviators. Today it is also home to one of the largest grass roots fly-ins in the nation.
If you would like to learn more about Lee Bottom Flying Field or the Wood, Fabric, & Tailwheels Fly-In, check out

Walker, a 44-year-old metal smith who owns Edward E. Petri Co. in Downtown Indianapolis, wanted to replace his Korean War-era helicopter with a larger aircraft, and he had special reasons for choosing the Huey.

Walker grew up just outside Peru, Ind., near Grissom Air Force Base during the Vietnam War. He knew several people who served in the war, and he learned how important Hueys were in it. The helicopters dropped troops in the jungle, rescued them when they were hurt and delivered supplies. The Hueys' loud, distinctive sound could be a comfort or cause for panic, and it's still deeply ingrained in many veterans' minds.

"They go up and put their hand on it," Walker said. "Some of them cry. It's unbelievable how it affects the veterans."

He knew he had to do something special with his new aircraft.

About a year after his purchase, Walker formed Indiana Air Search and Rescue, a nonprofit group that would put that helicopter to good use.

The group's goal is to use historic aircraft to provide aid during natural disasters and help rescue people who are lost or in danger, Walker said. When they're not involved in a rescue, members will display their aircraft at schools and military events to educate the public.

The group will host its first event Saturday in Fishers to showcase newly restored aircraft and raise money to begin the mission. Members' goal is to begin providing services in the spring.

Those who attend the event will be able to look at the Huey and World War II planes and take a ride in a civilian helicopter, Walker said. Jewelry, military memorabilia and other items will be up for bid in a silent auction. Games will be available for children.

Indiana Air Search and Rescue is trying to raise as much money as possible so it can get off the ground. Walker said the group already has received about $175,000 in money and donated parts.
The group's next project is to restore a C-47 from World War II. Walker said the plane would be beneficial to Indiana Air Search and Rescue's efforts because of its versatility and ability to land on almost any surface.

The group has a donor interested in building it a hangar. It would like to stay based at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport in Fishers if possible, said Walker, a Northside resident.
Walker attributed the group's success to its 20 members. They range from experienced war pilots to two teenagers who help with research and construction, but they're all crucial to the operation, he said. Eight of them are certified first responders, which means they've met standards established by the Department of Homeland Security.

Skip Budny, 68, Danville, joined the group about two years ago. He piloted Hueys during the Vietnam War and wanted to work with them again. He said he liked the idea of restoring an aircraft that would've sat unused.

"This aircraft will actually be out there flying and providing a service for the community," he said.

CARLTON LAUNCHES SUPER SALTO –ICAShq.org
Bob Carlton IS a rocket scientist, so nobody was too surprised when he started musing about the possibility of putting a jet engine with 225 pounds of thrust onto a 620 pound, fully aerobatic Salto sailplane. But, on August 1, his jet-powered Super Salto sailplane actually flew. “It will be able to not only self launch, but perform vertical aerobatics immediately after takeoff,” says Carlton. “It will be the first and only sailplane capable of a ground start aerobatic routine.” But his old company name – Silent Wings Airshows – no longer fits the speed, power and noise of the Super Salto. So, he’s changing the name of his air show organization to Vertigo Airshows.

Video: Aerobatic fun in an Extra 300 for the World Aerobatics Championships from Flight International by Stuart
Last week I visited the home of racing Silverstone, to take part in a once in a lifetime opportunity - an aerobatics session with expert aviation instructors Ultimate High. This was in aid of the World Aerobatics Championships, a biennial event that next year will be held in England. I think the video neatly captures my excitement and gradual fear as my instructor takes me through various aerobatic manoeuvres, but notice how my face gradually gets paler and I get quieter as the tricks start to get bigger.

Aero-News: Quote of the Day (09.25.08) from Aero-News Network

Source: Markus Zipperer, an engineer with Germany's JetCat, which helped manufacture the jet-powered mono-wing that adventurer Yves Rossy will use Thursday morning at 0800 EDT for his attempt to fly across the English Channel.

Mr Rossy, who calls himself Fusionman, plans to drop out of an aircraft high above Calais, ignite his jet engines and, using his body to steer like a bird, rocket across the Channel at speeds of up to 115mph (185km/h), hopefully reaching Dover in about 13 minutes.

If all goes according to schedule we should have a unique view at Launch Complex 39 tomorrow morning. Endeavour arrived at Pad B this morning and certain operations will keep the Rotating Service Structure (RSS) retracted (as in the launch configuration) until mid morning. Meanwhile over on Pad A, Atlantis is waiting for the delivery of the Hubble Space Telescope Service Mission (HST SM-4) payload. In preparation for the canister delivery and lift into the Payload Changeout Room (PCR), the Pad A RSS will also be retracted tomorrow morning. So for a few hours tomorrow morning (somewhere between 7:30am – 10:30am) we will have a clear unobstructed view of both vehicles on the pads. The only other time this occurred was nearly 20 years ago, in September of 1990 (see photo above). Columbia (STS-35) was on Pad A and Discovery (STS-41) was on Pad B.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. - (Sept. 24, 2008) - EAA and the Southeast Regional Fly-In (SERFI) have signed a new working agreement that brings higher visibility to the SERFI event and clearly defines EAA's role in the popular fly-in.

The agreement underscores the shared missions of SERFI, which is celebrating its 18th anniversary in 2008, and EAA, the 170,000-member international organization that is dedicated to the spirit of aviation. Under the agreement, EAA will provide extensive promotion and coverage of SERFI, and also serve as a major sponsor of aviation educational activities such as forums and workshops during the event, among other considerations.

"This agreement provides an outstanding framework to ensure the future success of SERFI, confirms its organizational independence and highlights EAA's support for grassroots aviation events throughout the country," said Adam Smith, EAA's vice president of membership. "We have set the stage for success in our shared missions, which is to promote recreational aviation in all its forms."

The two organizations had operated under a more informal agreement, which did not provide specific definitions of each group's commitments and responsibilities. The new agreement, which is in place just in time for this year's SERFI on Oct. 24-26 at Evergreen, Ala., reflects the evolving aviation community in the 21st century.

"We're very happy to have this agreement signed with EAA," said Bruce Newman, SERFI chairman. "We're glad to be able to maintain a sponsorship relationship with EAA."

SERFI will once again be held at Middleton Field (GZH) just west of Evergreen, Ala., which features plenty of room for aircraft camping and parking. This year's theme is "Three Days of Friendly Folks and Flying Fun."

Among the forums and highlights scheduled are:
* FAA Aviation Safety Program;
* Education and informational forums;
* Open-Cockpit aircraft and helicopter flights available;
* Fly-Market on site with vendors;
* Plenty of grassroots aviation camaraderie and fun.

More information about SERFI, including admission prices, accommodations and schedule information as confirmed, is available at
www.serfi.org.

SERFI is owned and operated by the Southeast Regional Fly-In Inc., an organization that is independent of EAA. EAA does not own or control any part of the event or organizing body.

EAA embodies the spirit of aviation through the world's most engaged community of aviation enthusiasts. EAA's 170,000 members and 1,000 local chapters enjoy the fun and camaraderie of sharing their passion for flying, building and restoring recreational aircraft. For more information on EAA and its programs, call 800-JOIN-EAA (800-564-6322) or go to

Simple Airplanes + Modern Construction = Full-Scale Affordable Flight from Jetwhine by Scott Spangler
Like most pilots, I dreamed of one day owning an airplane. With the cost of groceries and gas, one son in college and his brother starting next year, I’d put the dream to bed. Given all the costs, I couldn’t justify it to myself, because I fly for fun, not transportation. But then I accepted Robert Baslee’s invitation to visit Airdrome Aeroplanes homebase, a 1,000-foot grass strip in Holden, Missouri, just east of Kansas City…

Marshall will probably host his barn party on saturday night for pilots and guests. Seeing his barn and party is worth the trip alone. It should be a fine time all around. There will be an aerobatic box available so you will likely see some serious Pitts flying too. Be there if you can! Wally

So, in 1923, he married and moved to Lansing where he set up an aerial photography and survey business. Using his old Jenny, and then other types, the enterprise proved successful and he gained many Govt. and private contracts. NEW GENERAL ELECTRIC VIDEO CELEBRATES INNOVATION AT EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH

Six-minute video is the main feature at
www.ge.com

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. - (Sept. 23, 2008) - The innovation on display at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008 has grabbed the attention of one of the world's largest technology companies, as General Electric has premiered a six-minute video featuring the sights, sounds and people of Oshkosh as the primary destination at the
www.ge.com website.

The video, produced during this year's event (July 28-August 3) at Wittman Regional Airport, highlights the innovation and passion for flight found throughout the grounds at EAA AirVenture. General Electric and Airbus brought their advanced engineering teams to Oshkosh this year on what they called an "innovation treasure hunt" to discover more of the ideas and imagination that have been hallmarks of EAA members for more than 50 years.

"Some of the world's top companies, such as General Electric and Airbus, are discovering what EAA members have known all along - there is no better gathering or showcase of what's possible in the world of flight than right here, along the flight line at EAA AirVenture," said Tom Poberezny, EAA president and AirVenture chairman. "This group could choose any location or event in the world, but they specifically came to Oshkosh to spark their own imaginations to what might be possible in the commercial aircraft of the future."

The video is available as the primary feature on the
www.ge.com website through October 24.

EAA embodies the spirit of aviation through the world's most engaged community of aviation enthusiasts. B-52 crash inspires romantic drama By Steven Zeitchik NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter)
Miramax has signed on for "Muchas Gracias, Bob Oppenheimer," a period romantic drama inspired by the potentially catastrophic crash of an American B-52 bomber in 1966. The film centers on an American serviceman in the 1960s who is sent on an appeasement mission to a fishing town in Spain after a U.S. military plane crash results in the accidental detonation of four hydrogen bombs; in addition to his role with the locals, the serviceman also embarks on a relationship. The project draws from the true story of Palomares, Spain, where in 1966 a B-52 crashed and released more than 1,000 pounds of nuclear material. Television series creator Bob Dolan Smith ("Grace Under Fire") wrote the first draft of the screenplay, with a new draft now being written by Daniel Taplitz, who is also working on the intergenerational drama "Man on a Train" for Miramax.

Art Nalls : Sea Harrier flew again this weekend from Alert 5 - Military Aviation News by noreply@blogger.com (pirate)
Art Nalls is back flying his Sea Harrier, report after the jump. We worked on the minor discrepencies on Saturday and set up for a flight on Sunday, after the local church services were over. We're trying to be good neighbors with such a loud machine. On schedule, we rolled her out, cleaned the canopy, and I strapped in. The takeoff was perfect, using only partial power and then the moment of truth - - - I cycled the landing gear. (insert spine-tingling music here) You might not think that such an operation would generate so much stress and anxiety, but it did. Our last troubles were all because of this simple operation, or lack of it. Four up and locked, four down and locked, four up and locked and I headed for the aerobatic working area. I performed a few, basic aerobatic maneuvers as required by our operating limitations. All were complete and without any adverse qualities. A very impressive machine. I returned to the airfield for a 78-knot landing, exercising the nozzle speed trim - also an impressive device. I turned off mid-field easily. The type-rating check ride is scheduled for next weekend. Art Nalls

Philip Stevens reports - Target Aviation Photography : Russian Fighters over Nevada from Skycontrol by alain
Nellis Air Force Base (AFB) in Nevada is the home of the US Air Force Warfare Centre (USAFWC), tasked with training pilots to become the best combat aviators in the world. The USAFWC has at its disposal every aircraft in the air force's inventory with the huge Nellis Air Force Range (NAFR) just to the north of the airfield. Divided now into two zones, north and south, the NAFR is the largest US range covering some 4,700 square miles. A larger area of 14,800 square miles, which is half the size of Scotland, is available for military flying operations. The NAFR contains dummy airfields, unprepared runways, Surface to Air Missile (SAM) sites, Surface to Surface Missiles (SSM), Anti-aircraft artillery and bunkers, in fact everything you would expect in a war zone. The training is conducted with air and ground units of the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. Many allied nations are also able to train at Nellis, it is vital that the Allied coalition forces as seen during both Gulf Wars, are able to fly and fight together as one seamless unit. Four or more times a year, Red Flag exercises, involving around 1,200 aircraft flying over 20,000 sorties, are run by the 414th Combat Training Squadron (CTS), 57th Operations Group (OG) of the 57th Wing (WG). The ten day exercises are designed to enable US and Allied forces to fight together in the most realistic way possible. For Red Flag 08-4 in August, the fourth exercise of the fiscal year, the French (FAF), Indian (IAF) and Republic of Korea (RoKAF) air forces were invited to fly with and against US forces based in the US, UK and Japan. The IAF with eight Sukhoi Su-30MKI's and the RoKAF, with six Boeing F-15K Slam Eagle's, were attending Red Flag for the first time.

Beloved Warbirds Coming in Strong at Victory Days

VICTORY DAYS 3-5 October 2008 Terre Haute International Airport - Hulman Field

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 22, 2008

Beloved Warbirds Coming in Strong at Victory Days
From home front to war front, Victory Days authentically tells the story of WWII America

Terre Haute, IN—Military aircraft, especially vintage WWII, are what the public clamors for and visitors to Victory Days 2008 will be treated to a remarkable display of their favorites. Military and pre-war civilian aircraft will be on display throughout the event. Expect military primary, basic, and advanced trainers, liaison aircraft, cargo, fighter, light, medium and heavy bombers including:

-Memphis Belle B-17
-Lady Liberty A-26
-Wicked Wabbit and Hun Hunter P-47s
-Black Sparrow C-47
-Piedmont DC-3
-Wildcat
-TBM’s
-P-51 Mustang
-Black Cat PBY Catalina
-CessnaT-50 Bobcat, “Bamboo Bomber”
-B-25 Mitchell

“These aren’t just old airplanes!” declares Paul King, Victory Days Executive Director. “They have authentic histories with life and death stories, and many, such as the Memphis Belle, even have genuine celebrity status. The Memphis Belle, for example, is one of only a handful from this class of bomber aircraft that still flies today. The B-17, also known as the Flying Fortress, is the most recognizable bomber of WWII, highlighted in many WWII movies. The Memphis Belle in particular, is known for being the first to complete the required 25 combat missions. It then returned to the states on a publicity tour to raise support for the war.”

These aircraft will be flying during the event, on hand for static display, and participating in conjunction with historically significant re-enactor events. You might see some of them making the rounds in the morning, as a reminder to get yourselves down to the Terre Haute airport to take a closer look at the many Warbirds that are participating in Victory Days 2008.

Four lucky people will have an opportunity to purchase a ride-along with the Liberty Jump Team paratroopers on Saturday or Sunday as they make their jump flights from the Black Sparrow C-47. Four individual rides will be auctioned at the Friday night, Oct. 3, Hangar Dinner Dance. (Tickets for the Hangar Dance are available online at
www.victorydays.org .)

Expect a range of historically significant sights and sounds at Victory Days including an active military encampment, live radio broadcast, the Liberty Jump Team, vintage car exhibit, 1940s living rooms and kitchen, antique tractors, a quilting exhibit, battalion field hospital, small arms and weapons, jeeps, tanks and demonstrations and great food. There is something for the entire family.

“This is just what you’d expect from the event that is establishing itself as the WWII historical event of the year,” said Darrel Zeck, Director of Public Affairs, City of Terre Haute. “We are extremely pleased to have attracted this unique patriotic event to be hosted at Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field. With the level of interest we’ve been seeing from the community, we expect Victory Days to become an annual favorite for years to come.”

There are 3 ways to get tickets to Victory Days, October 3-4-5, 2008:

VictoryDays.org: $15 G/A Adult, $6 Child. $50 Flyers Club, $30 Child; find group discounts and 3-day passes exclusively online.

On Sept. 8, Matteo Marianeschi visited Istrana where he discovered the following preserved F-104G. According to the information he got during the visit by a pilot, the aircraft had arrived from Dal Molin Museum in Vicenza during the summer. The aircraft has a dual colour scheme: on the right side the aircraft wears the code 3-01 of the 132° Gruppo belonging to the Villafranca-based 3° Stormo; the left side wears the code 3-31 of the 28° Gruppo of the 3° Stormo. The weird thing is that on both side there's the famous Strega (witch), 28° Gruppo emblem (and radio callsign). The aircraft is serialled MM6577, however this serial was reported in Cervia, even if a further visual check did not provide any confirmation of the 3-01/6577 being there. If the serial is authentic, the aircraft belonged to the 154° Gruppo of the 6° Stormo in Ghedi when the it made the last flight in 1982.

Section 3 - "The family" of the Reno Air Races

If you wear an orange shirt at the Reno Air Races, you are part of "the family." This is Bob, he is part of the original thirteen members of Section 3. He travels to Reno every year from Boise, ID. During race week his favorite color is orange because that is the color of all the hats, t-shirts, bandannas and banners of the most lively section of fans at the Reno National Championship Air Races. If I may take a liberty here - he is the defacto leader of Section 3.

Bob (pictured left with his wife Barbara) has been coming to the races for 30 years now. He believes Section 3 started in 1983. It all started in fun. Jack, another founding member, would holler at the ladies and jest with other fans in the stands. That is how it all started. Another fan from California brought the numbered placards from a Safeway store and they became the rating cards that are held up after a performance or race. The next year, Bob brought thirteen orange shirts to Reno. The beginning. Bob is an old national guardsman. He's been in for 41 years. He doesn't know all the nuts and bolts, or even the names of ALL the airplanes. "I'm just a fan and I'm here for the the fun and excitement."

About this time, the announcer said something about Section 3 and the group around us erupts into cheering and clapping. This happens frequently while I'm sitting with Bob and listening to stories of races gone by.

The tradition at Reno is for the old restored fire truck to bring the winning race team of a heat down the flight line. Bob has the crew in Section 3 wait for his queue before they start cheering. This year, as a gag, Bob will sometimes let the fire truck pass by a little ways before giving the the signal to cheer. It is just another way of extending the fun.

Another founding member is "Scoop". He's the only one that reads the newspaper each morning. Thus, when someone asks about the previous days activities, Scoop lets everyone in on what the press has published.

Section 3 is a fixture now. Today, even marriage proposals are done in front of the section. Many, if not all, of the planes "bow" in front of Section 3. I listened to a few stories while there...One year, a biplane or formula racer was caught in a "twister" or dust devil at the end of the pylons. The group tied the orange shirts together and collected about $700 or $800 from their section for the team. With this success, the effort continued through the rest of the stands. Approximately, eleven thousand dollars was collected. Then they challenged a casino to match it. Section 3 was invited to the banquet that night where they signed an orange shirt for the team. When they were done the shirt was black. When asked, they thought the pilot was Erroll Roberson, and this would have been '86 or so (here's a related story I found on AAFO). They said it was freezing that year.

As I wrapped up the interview with Bob, Steve Senegal, winner of the Formula One Class - Gold, stopped in front of the section, turned off his plane, stepped out of the cockpit, peeled off the top of his flight suit and revealed an orange Section 3 t-shirt. The fans went crazy, and Steve ran up into the stands and handed out orange Section 3 bandannas. There was plenty of backslapping. Later that day, Jon Sharp came into the stands and enjoyed his victory of the Super Sports Class with the fans. And in the slideshow below, you'll even see a picture Maj. Moga's commander from the F-22 wing spending some time with the Section 3 crowd signing t-shirts!

Becoming a part of Section 3 is easy. Take a seat in the section. Buy your orange t-shirt, and just become a part of the festivities that take place during the day. Keep listening too - you are bound to catch some history of races gone by.

Experimental Project Files - Bristol Brigand from Warbirds Online by Scott WRG Editor
The success of the
Beaufighter as a torpedo bomber lead to the development of an aircraft dedicated to this role. Developed from the Bristol Buckingham bomber, the Brigand used most of the Buckinghams flight surfaces. Deliveries of the TF.1 Model (Torpedo Fighter Mk I) were made to 36 and 42 Squadrons but with the war over the future of this aircraft was in doubt. It was decided that the type was versatile enough to be rebuilt for a different role. The Brigand was removed from service and rebuilt as a bomber with a clear view canopy and other detail changes and returned to service in Malaysia and Kenya. This robust aircraft served with distinction until eventually replaced by the Canberra.

Air show in Douglas--more details by tourcochisecounty
More details have come in on the air show in Douglas on Wednesday, Oct. 1 that I told you about in a previous post. It's a little over a month away, so put in for a vacation day now. You you can see the precision air acrobatics of Canada's Snowbirds. These snow birds are different from what Arizonans usually call "snow birds." Instead of people (usually retirees) who come from cold climates to enjoy Arizona's mild, sunny winter weather, these snowbirds are pilots who perform precision feats in the air. They are similar to Blue Angels (the U.S. Navy's flight demonstration team). Robin, one the owners of the Gadsden Hotel, is wild about airplanes and flying. She comes from an aviation family and culture: she's a pilot, her husband is a pilot, her stepson is a pilot... you get the idea! Douglas also has some cool aviation history. Did you know that Eleanor Roosevelt dedicated the airport in Douglas? It happened in 1928. The following year, Amelia Earhart participated in the Women's Air Derby, a transcontinental air race for woman pilots, held at the airport. They have a small museum at the airport that gives visitors information about Douglas's history and fascination with airplanes and flying. I'll bet it will be open during the air show for aviation enthusiasts who want to explore the aviation connection in Cochise County a bit more.

NALLS TEST FLIES SEA HARRIER – ICAShq.org
The only privately owned Harrier jump jet performed four take-offs and four landings yesterday, September 14. Ten months ago, the aircraft had a landing gear problem that required some repairs. With these tests taken care of, ICAS member and air show performer Art Nalls is making plans for a checkride and an aerobatic competency evaluation in this one-of-a-kind air show airplane. ICAS members should expect Nalls and the Harrier to make their air show debut soon thereafter.

CMSAF McKinley highlights 60 years of airpower from Air Force Link Top Stories by afnews@afnews.af.mil
Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Rodney J. McKinley spoke to Airmen at the Air Force 61st Birthday Celebration at Bolling Air Force Base, D.C., Sept. 18. Chief McKinley opened the celebration with a speech, highlighting events involving Airmen and the Air Force that happened since last year's celebration. "A year ago today, we were engaged in a year-long celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Air Force," Chief McKinley said. "We looked from our heritage to our horizons. Today we find ourselves in that horizon. True, this future finds us still a nation at war, but we are warriors. We have answered our nation's call and we will accomplish this, and every mission, with competence and pride.

TEN SPOTS OPEN FOR ICAS ACADEMY PROGAM IN HOUSTON – ICAShq.org
With more than half the slots already reserved, ICAS is encouraging members to register soon if they hope to participate in the 2008 ICAS Academy, scheduled for October 23-25 at Wings over Houston. This behind-the-scenes look at one of North America’s finest air shows will provide both newcomers and veterans with a unique opportunity to see how a top air show is organized, managed and conducted. Wings over Houston representatives have been compiling a briefing book with – literally – hundreds of pages of important planning documents, from budgets, marketing materials, sponsorship solicitation packages and performer and concessions contracts to set-up schedules, flying schedules, emergency response plans, management/organizational charts, timelines, and checklists. The program will begin in the evening on Thursday, October 23 and conclude two days later on Saturday, October 25. The fee to participate in this unique educational program is $265 per individual. Past experience suggests that the last slots in this year’s Academy will be reserved before the end of September. To learn more about the 2008 ICAS Academy and register for the program, contact ICAS headquarters at
icas@airshows.org or by phone at 703-779-8510. You can also get additional details by visiting the ICAS website at http://www.icashq.org/ICASAcademy/08Academy.doc.

Aviation Airshow Air Race Photography Discussion - Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty from http://www.aafo.com/
Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty - On Wednesday evening, Sept. 9, 2008, a unique and special event took place at Stead Field. That was when three stunning examples of the Grumman F7F Tigercat were brought together for the first time in ages. I started setting this photoshoot up during Oshkosh. That is when I found out John Sessions was planning on bringing his Tigercat "Bad Kitty" to the Rolls Royce Heritage Invitational. The wheels started turning immediately, and I contacted Mr. Sessions to get his take on the possibility of accomplishing a two ship Tigercat shoot. He aggreed as did Mike Brown. Sessions also owns the stunning B model Mustang, Impatient Virgin, that was participating in the Rolls Royce Heritage event. What a magnificent restoration! Anyway, a little over a week before the air races I received an email from Marshe Pike, coordinator of the Heritage Invitational, informing me that Clay Lacy would be bringing a third Tigercat to Reno. Once I received this information I just had to contact Mr. Lacy and see if he would be interested in being part of something truely special, a THREE ship Tigercat shoot? Lacy agreed almost immediately upon hearing who the other Tigercats were. And so, I now had the rare opportunity to photograph three of the big cats, and I could not believe it myself. I had the best time during the shoot and I have to thank Mike Brown, Clay Lacy, John Sessions, and John Muszala for bringing these fine examples to Reno and allowing me the opportunity to photograph these three cats. I also want to thank Scott Slocum for providing his Bonanza as the photoship. By the way, the sound of those radial engines groaning outside the door of the photoship was sweet music. As one person so apply put it into perspective, "Three Tigercats, are you kidding me?" No I am not. I can't share all the photos from the shoot as there are other interested parties. I can share a few and hope this will wet a few of your appetities for the time being.

Re: National Championship Air Races & Airshow 2008 from FenceCheck Forums - Spirit of Texas......How Stu Dawson Shows His State Pride! - OK boys and girls, I have been slaving over this computer most of the day and I finally have something to share with the class. First up is the highly spirited Sea Fury from the state of Texas. Stu Dawson was gracious enough to go flying with me during race week. I threatened him I was bringing my camera, but he didn't seem to mind much. What a gentleman, and one of the nicest pilots in the Unlimited Class. Stewart, I want to thank you for the opportunity to photograph Spirit of Texas, and the pride of Texas. Look for this one to be featured in the 2010 edition of the Legacy of Speed calendar. Can anyone tell where Stu Dawson's pride lies? Enjoy the photos and there is more to come soon.

The Heritage Trophy is displayed at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

Winners in other categories are:
Antique Category (Orville and Wilbur Wright Trophy): 1929 Curtis Wright Travel Air SA6000A - owned by John Seibold of Williams, AZ and restored by Jim Helfrish of Twin Otter Intl Ltd and Chuck Wentworth at Antique Aero.

Classic Category (Paul E. Garber Trophy): 1960 G18S Beechcraft - owned by Jim Warren of Coeur d Alene, ID and restored Jim Warren and Jeff Binger.

Assisting in the trophy presentations to the winning owners were National Aviation Hall of Fame Enshrinees General (ret) Bill Anders, aviation pioneer Dick Rutan, Col. Bud Anderson, former test pilot and air show legend Robert A. 'Bob' Hoover, Ron Kaplan, Executive Director of
the National Aviation Hall of Fame, Linda Shiner, editor of Smithsonian Air and Space Magazine; Ken Perich, Rolls-Royce North America and Mike Houghton, CEO of the Reno Air Racing Foundation. The Invitational held in conjunction with the Reno National Championship
Air Races celebrates aviation treasures.

This endeavor is a joint effort under the auspices of rolls-Royce North America Inc., the National Aviation Hall of Fame, and the Reno air Racing Foundation with support from the Smithsonian Institution's National air and Space Museum. On board for 2008 are new sponsors Air Transport World, Speed news and Airmail Greetings who join in the commitment of honoring our nation's aviation heritage.

The National Aviation Heritage Invitational encourages preservation of aviation history through the restoration of aircraft to original flying condition. The invitational was founded in 1998. A five-member panel, including representatives of the National Air and Space Museum, judges each aircraft on its technical merit and how well it represents the aircraft early in its career.
Authenticity to the original manufacturer's condition is the "gold standard" for each plane.
