Gannon, 85, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, spoke to the Hartsville Lions Club about instances in his life when he was inspired by the flag. ... Another occasion came when as a 17-year-old U.S. Army recruit standing in an armory in Camden, N.J., before a giant U.S. flag that extended from the ceiling to the floor of the building, Gannon swore a solemn oath to defend the flag against all enemies. That was during World War II. Just a few months later, while his former classmates were graduating from high school, Gannon was piloting a B-17 Flying Fortress on bombing raids over Europe. By 20, he was piloting B-29s in the Pacific.
