CAP celebrates 68th anniversary - General Aviation News
The 58,000 volunteers of the Civil Air Patrol are marking CAP's 68th anniversary Dec. 1.
The all-volunteer, nonprofit organization was founded Dec. 1, 1941, less than a week before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor led to America's involvement in World War II. Its members soon proved their worth by conducting aerial patrols, vigilance that discouraged and eventually stopped German U-boat attacks on shipping in American waterways. Fifty-nine members died; 26 were lost at sea; and seven others were seriously injured while carrying out CAP missions during the war. ...

Poor Old Hellcat - Neptunus Lex
A World War II era Navy fighter was brought up from the bottom of Lake Michigan yesterday, evoking strong memories of a vanished time to the aviator who put her there:
Walter Elcock, 89, said he remembers the day as though it was yesterday.
During a training exercise during which Elcock was practising landing on a carrier deck, he was brought in too low and lost his lift.
Well…
Two thousand horses once screamed under that cowl.
The Hellcat – the first design to incorporate lessons learned from actual combat with the Imperial Japanese Navy – was the most successful naval fighter ever, credited with the destruction of over 5000 aircraft in the Pacific Campaign and another 50 or so with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm.
David McCampbell, the Navy's leading ace with 34 kills, scored all his victories in the Hellcat.
Over 12,000 Hellcats were built between 1941 and 1945.

Remembering Ed Stimpson - Airport Check-In
I'm writing the day after Thanksgiving and word has just reached me about the death of my old friend, Ed Stimpson. ...
Most recently, Ed served as chair of the board of the Boise Airport. Ed retired to Idaho after his term as U.S. Ambassador to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Ed had been selected to the ICAO Ambassador post by President Clinton and served into the first few years of the Bush Administration. It was no surprise that his service would span two different administrations; Ed was always known as a Pro's Pro; I don't think I ever met anyone who was as committed to a strong aviation industry, in all its aspects.
I first met Ed when he was president of the ...

Boeing Everett Factory Tour:Required Viewing for All Licensed Pilots from Av8rdan's World of Flying
(Editor's note: This is part one of two parts.)
I'm not going to mince words here...I've been in love (lust?) with Boeing jet airliners since the first time I watched a 707 depart Fresno Air Terminal (FAT) westbound over my house. It was the 707 that sent me into fence-hanging ecstasy after riding my Schwinn Sting Ray to FAT for an afternoon of planespotting. My first airliner ride was in a 707, SFO to SEA, non-stop, and it was a thrill ride for this 10-year-old.
These days, I follow Boeing about as much as most pilots. I dream about my first ride in the 787 Dreamliner, and still hope to snag a ride in a 747 someday. ...
