HANGAR PARTY FAREWELL TO TIM
THE final event of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2014 at RAF Fairford in 
Gloucestershire, the Hangar Party awards ceremony, was the occasion for a presentation to Tim Prince, who is stepping down as Chief Executive of the airshow after 42 years.
Following the presentation of the awards, Air Marshal Sir Kevin Leeson, Chairman of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and President of RIAT, paid tribute to Tim.
He spoke of Tim’s role in starting, developing and presiding over the biggest military airshow in the world and said: “Tim has given most of his working life to the Air Tattoo and to aviation more widely, and I’m sure we all want to wish him well in his retirement. The RIAT family is very sad to see Tim moving on: he will hand over to his successor Andy Armstrong later this week, and Andy is looking forward to continuing the tradition of excellence and delivering the kind of displays and shows that Tim has established as his record.
He added: “I know all of you will wish to recognise Tim’s outstanding achievements of 43 years of unstinting dedication and imagination in showcasing the brilliance of aviation and caring for its 
people.”
Alan Smith, Chairman of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises, then presented the RIAT Sword of Merit to Tim, amid tumultuous applause.
Tim replied: “Can I just say a big thank you: I’ve had a great time running this event with a lot of good people – Paul Bowen and everybody that’s been on the team. Many have passed on now but together we’ve all believed in achieving the impossible and over the years we’ve done some outstanding things.
“So my thanks goes to absolutely everybody for helping me have a great 43 years. The Air Tattoo brand is now something pretty famous - long may it last.”
Tim’s words were followed by a storm of Red Arrows confetti, as the Air Tattoo’s volunteers, participants, sponsors and fellow organisers joined in a standing aviation, saying the fondest of farewells to the man who’s been the figurehead of the event for over four decades.
The Royal International Air Tattoo is staged annually in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust which, in turn, awards grants in support of the RAF family, including serving personnel and Air Cadets. Since it was established in January 2005, the Trustees have awarded over £2.1 million to a wide range of projects and initiatives.
DISPLAY TEAMS TAKE RIAT HONOURS
AEROBATIC display teams scooped two of the honours yesterday (Sunday) at the awards ceremony at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
It was only fitting that, after celebrating their 50th display season at the Air Tattoo, the RAF Red Arrows took the Steedman Display Sword, while their counterparts from the Italian Air Force, the Frecce Tricolori, took the Lockheed Martin Cannestra Trophy.
The traditional end to the event, the Sunday Night Hangar Party, was introduced by Air Marshal Sir Kevin Leeson, Chairman of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and President of RIAT, who opened proceedings by thanking everyone for their contributions to RIAT 2014. Sir Kevin thanked volunteers and participants for making the event possible, adding: “We salute and thank everyone for their part in what has been a great weekend.”
The top award, the King Hussein Memorial Sword - presented in memory of the late HM King Hussein of Jordan, Patron of the International Air Tattoo (1983-1989) for the Best Overall Flying Demonstration – went to WO1 Mick Kildea and Capt Neill Posthumus of 671 Sqn Army Air Corps, flying the Westland Lynx AH.7.The sword was presented by Commander of the Royal Jordanian Air Force, Major General Mansor Aljobour.
The Lynx crew had already departed, so the sword was accepted on their behalf by display pilot WO2 Bruce Allen, who flew the Apache AH1 at the event.
The Paul Bowen Trophy - presented in memory of the Royal International Air Tattoo co-founder Paul Bowen for the Best Solo Jet Demonstration – went to Royal Air Force Typhoon display pilot, Flt Lt Noel Rees of 29 Sqn. The trophy was presented by Tim Prince, Director of the Air Tattoo and Chief Executive of the RAFCTE and RIAT.
Flt Lt Rees said: “It’s an absolute honour to receive this on behalf of the whole team. They are the ones who got the jets ready this weekend and we displayed in sometimes challenging weather. It’s a fitting award for the whole team.”
The Sir Douglas Bader Trophy – presented for the Best Individual Flying Display – went to Commandant Aviateur Renaud ‘Grat’ Thys, flying the F-16AM from 350 Sqn Belgian Air Component. Alan Smith, Chairman of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises, presented the trophy to Comdt Avi Thys who said: “It’s great and a huge personal accomplishment for me. It really does mean a lot, and to receive a trophy in my last display season, and in the name of Sir Douglas Bader, is humbling.”
Gp Capt Geoff Brindle, who’s worked in many RIAT roles from Lightning display pilot to Flying Display Director, presented The Lockheed Martin Cannestra Trophy for the Best Flying Demonstration by an overseas participant.
The trophy went to the Frecce Tricolori, the Italian Air Force aerobatic display team who closed the airshow with a dramatic and colourful display. Maj Jan Slanger said: “It’s an honour and a pleasure, especially in the 50th anniversary of the Red Arrows. We’re part of the same family of all the display teams representing the professionalism of our armed forces in the service of our nations and the international community.”
The Steedman Display Sword - presented by The Royal International Air Tattoo in memory of the late Air Chief Marshal Sir Alasdair Steedman, Chairman of the International Air Tattoo (1981-1988), for the Best Flying Demonstration by a UK participant – was awarded to the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows. .
Air Marshal Sir Kevin Leeson presented the sword to Sqn Ldr Jim Turner, who said: “Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Red Arrows has been memorable, and I hope the Red Arrows will still be displaying after another 50 years.”
The As the Crow Flies Trophy, awarded for the best overall flying demonstration as voted for by the Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo, was presented by David Bywater, Non-Executive Director of the RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises. The award went to Maj Bartlomiej Mejka and Capt Radosław Leszczyk of Polish Air Force 21st Air Base, flying the Sukhoi Su-22M ‘Fitter’ demonstration. Maj Mejka said: “This is very special for us. It has been an amazing weekend at the biggest airshow of all, and this is the first prize we have won!”
And finally, the Best Paint Scheme award, for the aircraft with the best special livery, went to the Hellenic Air Force A-7E Corsair II from 336 Olympos Sqn. The trophy was presented by Gardiner Porter, Government of Military Aviation Jeppesen.
Major Apostolos Papadopoulos said: “We were very glad to be here, to support RIAT and the Charitable Trust. This is the last time the A-7 will be presented outside Greece and that makes this award very special.”

TIME RUNS OUT FOR F-35B AT AIR TATTOO
Despite everyone’s best endeavours, it has now been decided that the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II will not fly at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2014 as all of the aircraft currently remain grounded.
Air Tattoo Chief Executive Tim Prince said the decision was a great disappointment given the amount of planning that had gone into bringing the aircraft over to RIAT for its international display debut.
He said: “It’s not unusual for there to be delays in the development programme of any new military aircraft, and the Air Tattoo has been working closely with teams from Lockheed Martin, the US Marine Corps, Department of Defence and MoD to ensure the aircraft touched down at RAF Fairford for the Air Tattoo. Unfortunately we’ve simply run out of time.”
An MoD spokesman said "The safety of pilots and aircraft has to be our priority. Of course, it is disappointing that the Lightning II has not arrived in the UK in time for the Air Tattoo but we fully support the decision not to grant clearance for the aircraft to make their first transatlantic flight to the UK until the technical investigations following an engine failure are complete.”
Mr Prince added: “We fully understand and support the decision as safety of pilots and aircraft has to be paramount.
“Fortunately, the F-35B is only one of more than 200 exciting aircraft representing 33 air arms from 27 countries around the globe that will be taking part in RIAT 2014, which begins tomorrow (Friday, July 11). We are looking forward to staging the UK’s biggest celebrations marking the RAF Red Arrows 50th display season at the world’s largest military airshow.”

RED-LETTER DAY AS ARROWS HIT TARGET
RAF FAIRFORD in the Cotswolds rolled out the red carpet today (Wednesday, June 4) at the Media Launch heralding this year’s Royal International Air Tattoo, with the entire RAF Red Arrows aerobatic display team touching down to give media guests a taster of the world’s greatest airshow.
This year’s Air Tattoo is hosting the official celebrations for the 50th display season of the world-famous aerobatic display team, and the Reds, who first formed at the Fairford Base in 1965, put on a spectacular ‘homecoming’. They were greeted on touch-down by three former Red Arrows, including Sqn Ldr Henry Prince, one of the original Red Arrows pilots.
Sqn Ldr Prince, 80, from Norfolk was delighted to be able to attend the Launch and to meet his present-day counterparts on the display team. He said: “The Red Arrows have kept up a good tradition and the current team have built upon it wonderfully.”
Also present were Red Arrows Gnat pilot Des Sheen, from Somerford Keynes, who flew as Red 8 in 1972 and 1975, and Red 6 (Synchro Pair leader) in 1975, and Ray Thilthorpe from South Cerney, Red 10 (team manager), from 1978 to 1982.
Sqn Ldr Jim Turner, who flies as Red 1, leader of the display team, said: “Fairford is one of 85 displays we’ll be doing in 11 countries this year, but the Air Tattoo is
going to be a major focus of our 50th display season celebrations
because, along with Little Rissington and Kemble, this is one of our
spiritual homes.”

The Reds were joined at the Media Launch by the RAF Tucano Display Team, their aircraft sporting a special ‘poppy’ livery to commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of World War One.
A Pegasus microlight was also present, brought in by Cpl Alan Robinson. Alan learnt to fly after receiving a scholarship from the Royal International Air Tattoo Flying Scholarships for Disabled People (FSDP), sponsored by the RAF Charitable Trust. He is now training to instruct others with disabilities, and will be joining an expedition in December, with seven other disabled pilots, to fly microlights to the South Pole.
Completing the event, the Italian winners of a trophy at last year’s airshow flew in to return their prize. Maj Fabio de Michele and the crew of the Alenia C-27J called in to wish the event luck and to hand back the As The Crow Flies Trophy, awarded for the best flying demonstration, as judged by the Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo (FRIAT). The crew flew in aboard an Italian Air Force Piaggio P180 Avanti light aircraft.
Maj de Michele said: “We really feel enthusiastic about the Air Tattoo: there’s a very special atmosphere here that we’ve experienced nowhere else. We were made to feel so welcome last year and we felt obliged to come back to give the FRIAT members in particular the recognition they deserve for their support.”
Tim Prince, CEO of the Air Tattoo, said: “I’m delighted that so many of our media friends have turned out to support the Launch. It’s been great that the Reds, the Tucano, the Trust’s FSDP scholar and our wonderful Italian friends have been able to come along, and everything bodes well for a fantastic Air Tattoo in July.”
Andy Armstrong, Chief Executive designate who will take over from Tim after this year’s event, added: “This is my first ever Media Launch, and it’s fantastic to be involved in such an important event in the run up to RIAT 2014. I’ve been deeply impressed by the planning and execution that seems to go into everything connected with RIAT, and today’s event is no exception.”

People planning to be at this summer’s Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford to celebrate the Red Arrows’ 50th display season have until the end of the month to take advantage of specially-priced Super Earlybird tickets.
The three-day event, which takes place on July 11-13, will feature a number of unique Red Arrows’ themed spectacles in the air and on the ground as the world famous aerobatic display team return to their first home as part of their official birthday celebrations.
Admission tickets bought by the January 31 deadline are £10 cheaper than the standard price meaning special Friday Reds’ Pit Day tickets can be bought for £24 with Saturday and Sunday tickets costing £34. All under-16s are admitted free.
Air Tattoo spokesman Richard Arquati said buying early not only made sense financially but would also ensure people didn’t risk missing out on all the excitement planned.
He said: “Last July’s airshow was a sell-out and we’re anticipating a repeat this year as excitement for the Reds’ 50th builds. As well as the public’s enthusiasm, fellow military aviators from around the globe have also indicated to us that they’d like to be part of the celebrations. It’s going to be very 
special.”
As well as celebrating the Reds’ 50th, the Air Tattoo will be marking two other aviation landmarks: the 40th anniversary of both the Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon and the BAE Systems Hawk, the aircraft currently flown by the Red Arrows.
Earlier this month, the Air Tattoo, which is staged annually in support of the RAF Charitable Trust, won top honours in the Tourism Event of the Year category of the Cotswold Tourism Awards 2014. To book tickets and to find out about the range of enclosure packages visit airtattoo.com

RAF TRIO SCOOP AIR TATTOO AWARDS
PILOTS from the Royal Air Force enjoyed a good night at the awards ceremony yesterday (Sunday) at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, scooping three of the top seven prizes.
The Typhoon multi-role fighter, Chinook helicopter and Tucano trainer all transported their pilots to the winners’ rostrum at the traditional end to the event, the Sunday Night Hangar Party, when Air Chief Marshal Sir John Cheshire, Chairman of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust, opened proceedings by thanking everyone for their contributions to RIAT 2013.
Sir John thanked volunteers and participants for all their efforts, 
adding: “The awards were fiercely contested, and I hope all the participants have enjoyed their displays as much as we’ve enjoyed watching them”.
Gp Capt Geoff Brindle, Flying Display Director, said: “What we have seen at the Air Tattoo this year is a variety of acts being displayed, from World War 2 warbirds to the latest fly-by-wire fighter aircraft. We see huge technological leaps, but the same spirit remains amongst the aircrew here at the Royal International Air Tattoo.”
This year, the top award, the King Hussein Memorial Sword - presented in memory of the late HM King Hussein of Jordan, Patron of the International Air Tattoo (1983-1989) for the Best Overall Flying Demonstration - went to the Swiss Air Force PC-7 team from Dubendorf Air Base, Switzerland. The sword was presented by HRH Lt Gen Prince Feisal of Jordan.
The award was received by Capt Martin Vetter and his crew of 14. Capt Vetter said: “It’s such a great honour for us to hold this trophy in our hands, especially as we’re not a full-time display team. We’re different to the other teams, with our turbo-prop trainer aircraft, and we’re not as fast or as loud as some. But we try to give the public a great show and with nine aircraft we aim always to have at least one in front of the public. It’s really nice for us to get this.”
The Paul Bowen Trophy - presented by MBDA in memory of Royal International Air Tattoo co-founder Paul Bowen for the Best Solo Jet Demonstration – went to Royal Air Force Typhoon display pilot, Flt Lt Jamie Norris of 29 (Reserve) Squadron at RAF Coningsby. The trophy was presented by Tim Prince, Director of the Air Tattoo and Chief Executive of the RAFCTE.
Flt Lt Norris said: “It’s phenomenal to have walked away with the trophy. The display would not have been possible without the capabilities of the Typhoon, but the award is as much for the support and ground crews as their hard work makes it all possible.”
The Sir Douglas Bader Trophy – presented by Shell UK for the Best Individual Flying Display – went to Flt Lt Paul Farmer and his crew of four, flying the Chinook transport helicopter.
Alan Smith, Chairman of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises, presented the trophy to Flt Lt Farmer who said: “I’m absolutely blown away - I didn’t think we’d win. We’ve had a fantastic weekend and this really tops it off.”
The Lockheed Martin Cannestra Trophy – awarded for the Best Flying Demonstration by an overseas participant – was won by the Airbus A400M. The team of Karl-Heinz Mai and Anthony Flynn had already departed the show, so the trophy was presented to Chairman of the Display Flying Committee Roger Beazley by Gp Capt Brindle.
The Steedman Display Sword - presented by The Royal International Air Tattoo in memory of the late Air Chief Marshal Sir Alasdair Steedman, Chairman of the International Air Tattoo (1981-1988), for the Best Flying Demonstration by a UK participant – was awarded to Flt Lt Andrew Fyvie-Rae, flying the Tucano training aircraft from 72 (Reserve) Sqn, RAF Linton-on-Ouse.
Air Chief Marshal Sir John Cheshire, Chairman of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust and President of the Royal International Air Tattoo, presented the sword. Flt Lt Fyvie-Rae said: “I’m over the moon. I was in awe of the competition and didn’t think I had a chance of winning, so I’m absolutely thrilled.”
The As the Crow Flies Trophy, voted for by the Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo, was presented by David Bywater, Non-Executive Director of the RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises. The award went to Major Fabio De Michele, Capt Gianmarco di Loreto and Chief Master Sergeant Ugo Sabeni of the Alenia C-27J Spartan transport aircraft, from the Italian Air Force’s 311 Flight Test Squadron, Reparto Sperimentale Volo.
Maj Michele said : “This is a great success for us as a new crew working together, but it was the Air Tattoo atmosphere that really charged our display and got our adrenaline running to give a good show.”
And finally, the Best Livery award, also voted for by the Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo, went to the Panavia PA200 Tornado from AKG-51 Wing of the German Air Force, piloted by Capt Nico Kohls, and Capt Nils Begnuth. The aircraft had been specially painted for the Arctic Tiger Meet in Orland Norway in June, and it won the crew’s second award of the Air Tattoo: on Friday night they received the UTC Aerospace Concours Trophy as overall winner of the Air Tattoo’s Concours d'Elegance contest.
They received the award from Jeppesen’s Steve Dowell.
The Royal International Air Tattoo is staged annually in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust which, in turn, awards grants in support of the RAF family, including serving personnel and Air Cadets. Since it was established in January 2005, the Trustees have awarded over £1.8 million to a wide range of projects and initiatives.

Following a hot build-up to the show, around 130,000 visitors enjoyed cooler conditions, and were rewarded with breath-taking aerobatic displays from a variety of aircraft, including fast jets, aerial refuellers, transport aircraft, helicopters plus classic warbirds. Two nations made their Air Tattoo debuts in the flying display, the Finnish Army NH90 helicopter and the Estonian Air Force L39 Albatros.
And there were two classic Air Tattoo set-pieces portraying the ‘Best of British’ when the RAF Red Arrows flew with the British Airways Airbus A380 yesterday (Saturday) and the Airbus Military A400M Atlas today (Sunday).
Around 230 aircraft from 19 countries were on display at the event, whilst 30 overseas Air Chiefs and 49 senior UK military representatives attended.
Celebrity guests included Carol Vorderman, Countryfile presenter Adam Henson and Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. Dignitaries included HRH The Duke of Kent, HRH Prince Feisal of Jordan and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton. The new Chief of the Defence Staff, General Sir Nicholas Houghton, was also present, along with Philip Hammond, Secretary of State for Defence, and Philip Dunne, Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology.
Organisers were delighted to report that the mini-heatwave brought out the crowds, with the show sold-out on Saturday and Sunday.
Air Tattoo Chief Executive Tim Prince said: “We have been blessed with excellent weather, and this Air Tattoo has been buzzing with happy people. Our aircraft participants from home and abroad have shared with us the magic and excellence of aviation; and together with our own Royal Air Force, the Air Tattoo team and its numerous supporters have been proud to stage RIAT 2013, in its 42nd year, in support of the RAF Charitable Trust.”
Show Producer Nigel Samuels said: “The new initiatives to upgrade the overall show experience have been a huge success, with the introduction of three Service Stations and new themed areas. The Vintage Village and the Adrenalin and Techno Zones have exceeded our wildest expectations and customers appear delighted with our Air Tattoo CREW volunteers.”
The Air Tattoo medical teams reported a very quiet time, with Chief Medical Officer Sqn Ldr Darren Ellison reporting that some 180 visitors were treated for minor injuries over the weekend. He said: “We were prepared for heat-related conditions but our contingency plans weren’t needed and those who did require treatment had only minor problems – five people were transferred to hospital but the rest were treated at the Air Tattoo Medical Centre and then discharged home.”
Senior Fire Officer Barry Scott said his team was exceptionally quiet, both during the preparation stage and throughout the airshow. He said: “Our concern was the tinder-dry state of the grass, but fortunately we’ve had no problems.”
And Traffic Manager Malcolm Bowdler said: “The country roads around Fairford inevitably lead to some delays, but this year the early opening of the car parks at 6am each day helped free up approach routes, Saturday’s exit phase went well and we’re not anticipating any problems today.”
From the pilots’ perspective, Capt Bill Ramsey, who flew the Avro Vulcan XH558 on Saturday, said: “Displaying at the Air Tattoo still ticks all the boxes for a display pilot. The show is so big and I really enjoyed it. The feedback we got afterwards was fantastic."
First-time Air Tattoo visitor Chris Welsh, 56, from Cam, Gloucestershire, said: “It’s been a fantastic day out. The focus is on aircraft but it’s clear that a lot of effort has gone into making the airshow a great day out for all ages. I’ll definitely come again and I’ll recommend it to others.”
Her son Alex Mair, 32, from Hackney in London, said: “It’s been wonderful – when I walked through the gates it was like being a 15-year-old again, with my bedroom covered in aircraft posters. The displays were great – I didn’t realise you could do doughnuts in a plane – and I hope to be back.”
Delphine Ryan, 37, from Macclesfield, Cheshire, said: “It’s my first time here and I think there’s an incredible atmosphere: I’m really interested in the military aircraft and fighter jets.”
