Remember D-Day at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force from National Museum of the USAF Top Stories by nationalmuseum.usaf@wpafb.af.mil (Lauren Karch)
June 6 will mark the 65th anniversary of D-Day, the landing of Allied troops in France that greatly impacted the outcome of World War II. The invasion of France on June 6, 1944, began from the air. The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force permanently exhibits two aircraft representative of those used during the invasion, honoring the memory of D-Day. Before the main ground forces attacked the beaches in Normandy from the sea, huge skytrains of transports and gliders carried more than 17,000 men across the English Channel between midnight and dawn. Low clouds and fog over the Cherbourg Peninsula made aerial navigation difficult, and even trained pathfinders had trouble in locating and marking the desired drop zones.

Uncontrolled Airspace #122 "JIFR" from Uncontrolled Airspace: General Aviation Podcast

HELP!!! - Aviation Airshow Air Race Photography Discussion from http://www.aafo.com/
I hopped on the Collings Foundation's B17 today. What an experience!!! The plane was beautiful and as far as I know, restored to mint condition. A crew of three, Pilot, Co-pilot, and Third Guy to guide the ten ride alongs, were in the air for about 30 minutes. Weather was perfect. We strapped in to the original crew seats (a cushion and a seat belt strategically anchored to the floor in a position to optomise little space) taxied out and took off. Four 1820's working together put out some real WOW power. After we lifted off and the gear was up the Third Guy came through and signaled for us to unstrap and run around. And that is what we did. I was in the back with the waist guns, in the middle hanging my head out the hatch on top that they left open in the radio room. A little further forward and the observation bubble, then in the cockpit, and then all the way up in the adier's seat where the Third Guy took pictures of us. The only places we couldn't go were the tail gunner, the turret on the bottom (wouldn't have wanted to go in either anyway) and the pilot's seat. About the time we were setting up the approach, the Third Guy had us sit back down on the floor seats and strap in. I don't think I've ever felt a smoother landing. I heard the screach of the tires and felt the drag, but that's it. Priceless experience for those of you that take the opportunity.

Blue Thunder Home Page from http://www.bluethunderairracing.com/
The request for Blue Thunder II’s registration was sent in to the FAA Aircraft Registration in Oklahoma City on 4/22/2009. The registration was issued 5/13/09; post marked on the 18th and arrived 5/21/2009. I believe this is record time to receive a registration. Last month I talked about how we were building the cowl to fit a slightly larger spinner. Our cowl parts are some of the very first parts molded by Papa 51 and are considerably different than any I have seen before. The joggles are separate parts that must be bonded onto the mating part which was a bit of a pain. The cowl cheeks had a flat area in the front on top that we were never able to pull out so the top part of the cowl doesn’t match the spinner as well as I would like it to.
