Spend Independence Day at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force from National Museum of the USAF
This Independence Day, remember those who have established and maintain America's independence while visiting the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
With 17 acres of indoor exhibit space and more than 400 aerospace vehicles on display, the museum is dedicated to telling the story of the United States Air Force. Many accounts are stories of airmen who secured our nation's freedom, at times risking their own.
The new "Winged Boot: Escape and Evasion in World War II" exhibit showcases artifacts used by troops to avoid imprisonment during World War II. Air operations during the war were often conducted far behind enemy lines, and thousands of U.S. Army Air Forces airmen evaded capture after they were brought down. Some of those who were captured escaped from prison camps and made their way back to Allied territory. Escape and evasion during World War II demanded skill and courage to return with honor.
