Welcome to Airshow Traveler Magazine's Newsletter, Air Show Weekly, where we take a look at upcoming airshows and showcase current aviation topics. All air show information listed is accurate as we know it. Still, it is best to check with the individual air show to see if there are any changes. Even then, scheduled aircraft may not appear due to bad weather en route, or because of mechanical breakdown. | Dover AFB Air Show, June 20-21 | Location: Dover AFB, DE Admission, Adults: Free Gates Open: 9AM Website: http://www.dover.af.mil/library/openhouse.asp Dover AFB is home to the 436th Airlift Wing (active) and 512th Airlift Wing (reserve). Both wings fly the C-17 Globemaster III and the C-5 Galaxy. As mentioned in a previous newsletter, Dover has been chosen to test the C-5M Super Galaxy which is a modernized version of the C-5B and C-5C. The Dover show is one of our favorites with its ideal photographic conditions, great show lineup, and a rogue's gallery of static aircraft including many housed in the AMC Mobility Museum based here at Dover. If you have not visited this world class facility, here is your chance to see the museum and an air show at the same time. So now what is your excuse :) Our dear friend, Mike Leister, is the director of the museum and Mike has been most gracious to us over the years. He's one of the good guys. Behind the scenes are a group of dedicated volunteers who keep their aircraft in tip-top form. Can't wait to see their recently acquired A-26 Invader. You can't go wrong here, air show fans. Admission is free and the lineup is strong with the Thunderbirds and gaggles of warbirds present with our friends from Warbirds Over Long Island and the American Airpower Museum. You can expect a demo by the mighty C-5B Galaxy like this one (87-0035) that performed at the 2006 edition of the Dover show. Dover fits that bill, for it was here that I first met Bob and Chris Baranaskas who became two of our biggest supporters and two of our dearest friends. Bob may be physically gone from this earth, but he lives with me every day in my head and in my heart. You can expect a demo by the mighty C-5B Galaxy like this one (87-0035) that performed at the 2006 edition of the Dover show. | Olympic Air Show, June 20-21 | Location: Olympia Regional Airport, WA Admission, Adults: $10 at gate, cash only Admission, Under age 6: Free Gates Open: 9AM Website: http://www.olympicflightmuseum.com/airshow.php I attended last year's Olympic Show and it was great. Admission fee is reasonable as is the food. I remember buying a giant bag of caramel popcorn that lasted me the entire weekend. One of the treat's of this show is seeing a HH-43 Huskie helicopter fly. It's the only one left airborne in the world. The Huskie is due to fly again this year as are other warbirds like the P-51D Mustang 'American Beauty'. The B-25J Mitchell 'Pacific Prowler' (44-30823, N1042B0 will be on hand to perform at the show and sell rides all weekend. This photo was taken at the 2006 Hill AFB air show. It always falls on a weekend where we are already committed to another show. That's too bad for us, for it always has a stellar lineup and oodles of static aircraft on display. This year's headliners are the US Navy Blue Angels with the Golden Knights, a Harrier demo, and the F-16 demo thrown in for good measure. Even the kids get a special treat with Otto the Helicopter performing. I heard that the airport here in Davenport needed their lawn mowed so they called in Dale 'Snort' Snodgrass to give a close shave. Snort will be flying Jim Reed's P-51D Mustang 'Excalibur' (45-11540, NL151W) at the show. What started out to be a bi-annual one day affair has turned into a three day annual event. This year's dates are September 25-27. As Event Coordinator David C. Thomas puts it, "...we honor the memory of our WWI troops with the same spirit and patriotism that these early aviators displayed in defense of our countries." Navy Theme at Geneseo This Year A Navy theme this year at the 1941 Historical Aircraft Group museum is keeping with this museum's efforts to refresh itself every year. The museum is located in Geneseo, NY, and is better known as simply the Geneseo show. Or as they tout it, the Greatest Show on Turf. Not only are they expected to have four Corsairs, two Avengers, one Hellcat and one Wildcat at its July 11-12 show, but they have also booked the world's only flying Helldiver. If that doesn't tickle your warbird fancy, there is something wrong with you.
