Welcome to Airshow Traveler Magazine's Newsletter, Air Show Weekly, where we take a look at upcoming airshows and showcase current aviation topics.

All air show information listed is accurate as we know it.  Still, it is best to check with the individual air show to see if there are any changes.  Even then, scheduled aircraft may not appear due to bad weather en route, or because of mechanical breakdown.

I call the Indy show the 'Aviation Nation of the Midwest', and that's a compliment.  The show is a great mix of military, aerobatic, and most importantly for us, warbirds, warbirds, warbirds.  This is the only show I know of where you will see an F-100 Super Sabre fly.  I told our guys, Jim and Domingo, they better come back with great shots of the F-100 or no more media passes :)

The casual air show fan loves to see the jet teams so they will not be disappointed with the Blue Angels headlining.  But look at the lineup of warbirds in the air and on the ground.  The lists speak volumes about the show.

The P-47 Thunderbolt 'Hun Hunter XVI' (44-90460, N9246B) is expected at Indy.  Aircraft is from the Tennessee Museum of Aviation.  Photo taken by Horace Sagnor at the 2006 Thunder over Michigan show.

WWII Weekend in Reading, June 5-7

Gates Open:  8:30AM

If you like stepping back in time, then Reading, PA is your destination this weekend to see WWII recreated on the ground and in the air.  There are hand-to-hand combat skirmishes played out in the mock French village and an air show that commences in the afternoon.  There are tents, tents, and more tents, with all kinds of reenactors, and warbirds, warbirds, warbirds.  It's a good show that changes very little from year to year.  Yet, people keep coming back so it remains popular.

This year's show reverts back to its old layout.  Personally, I liked the new layout better as I thought it spread things out more, and it provided a better photo opportunity for the air show portion.  The old layout is claustrophobia city.  And if you try to sit and watch the air show, some photographer always steps in front of you at the last minute.  Very rude.

The world's only flying Helldiver is expected to fly at Reading this weekend.  A very rare bird indeed is this SB2C-5 (83589, N92879).  Photo taken by Howard German at the 2008 Tyndall AFB air show.

Location:  Southport Airport, MB, Canada
Admission:  Free

With the Snowbirds headlining and a demo by the F-86 Sabre Hawk, this figures to be a great show.

The 17 Wing is a training and support wing.  Aircraft based here include the C-130 Hercules, CC-138 Twin Otter, and Grob G120A.  The base also acts as a deployment base for CF-18 Hornets.

I wish the US military would provide air show patrons with a high-vis (that's slang for pretty graphics) demo aircraft like the Canadians do.  Case in point is this CF-18 (188711) with the beautiful tail markings.  Photo taken by Horace Sagnor at the 2006 Langley AFB air show.

Hill AFB Air Show/Open House, June 6-7

Location:  Hill AFB, UT
Admission:  Free
Gates Open:  8AM

Hill AFB is the best base there is for photographing an air show.  The backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains and the sun being over your shoulder most of the day makes for great photos.  Their last show was three years ago and it was spectacular, so look for another great show this year with the Thunderbirds headlining once again.

For aerobatic panache, there's Patty Wagstaff, Sean Tucker, Greg Poe, and Dan Buchanan.  If you like 'em louder, there's Viper West based right here at Hill with their F-16 Fighting Falcon, a Navy Hornet demo, and Steve Rosenberg with his Mig-21, a rare occurance at air shows.  And Lee Louderback will be there with his TF-51D Mustang, yes, TF-51.  This is a Cavalier Mustang built in 1967, so it classifies as a fighter and not a pursuit aircraft.  And it is a dual control aircraft thus making it a trainer.  Lee uses the Mustang with his Stallion 51 school to teach budding Mustang pilots the intricacies of the Mustang.

The best part of the 2006 show for me was the Mig Fury Fighters, which is comprised of a Mig-15bis (1A03508, N515MG), Mig-17F (1C1210, NX717MG), and a FJ-4B Fury (143575, N400FS), the only one in the world that still flies.  They are back again this year, and 'Doc' Sugden, pilot of the Fury, tells me they may even bring their T-2.  The three aircraft are shown below.  Both photos were taken at the 2006 air show at Hill.  The three aircraft engage in a mock Korean War dogfight and it is worth the price of admission, well, if there was an admission.  Like most military bases, the show is free.

Location:  Manitowoc County Airport, WI
Admission, Adults:  $5
Admission, Ages 10 and Under:  Free
Gates Open:  7AM

If you're going to have an air show and you can't get one of the jet teams, you better book a good warbird like 'Big Dog' Cary's T-33 Shooting Star.  You know from past newsletters how much we love this aircraft, the demo pilot Jerry 'Jive' Kerby, and his lovely wife and narrator, LM 'Lunar' Sawyer.  Kudos to the folks at Manitowoc.

The other performers list is a nice mix of warbird, aerobatic, and military, including the finest Stearman pilot there is in John Mohr.  Check out his one wheel landing.  For more excitement there's an F-16 Fighting Falcon demo and an F/A-18 Hornet demo.

A C-130 Hercules is expected to perform at the show, like this C-130H (92-1538) at the 2006 Hill AFB show.  This aircraft is with the Wyoming Air National Guard.

Special Events

The National Museum of the United States Air Force has announced their dates for their annual Dawn Patrol Rendezvous.  What started out to be a bi-annual one day affair has turned into a three day annual event.  This year's dates are September 25-27.  As Event Coordinator David C. Thomas puts it, "...we honor the memory of our WWI troops with the same spirit and patriotism that these early aviators displayed in defense of our countries."  For more information click on the link above.

Osprey Publishing to Host D-Day Veteran Ed Shames
Osprey has published a new book titled, Tonight We Die As Men.  It's a story of one of the forgotten battalions on D-Day, the 3rd Batallion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (3/506 PIR).  To promote their new book, they will have a booth at WWII Weekend in Reading, PA, June 5-7, with Ed Shames in attendance.  Shames was a staff sergeant for the 3/506 during D-DAY and then received a commission to 2nd Lieutenant.  Mr. Shames is a veteran of the 3/506 and wrote the forward to the book.

Navy Theme at Geneseo This Year
A Navy theme this year at the 1941 Historical Aircraft Group museum is keeping with this museum's efforts to refresh itself every year.  The museum is located in Geneseo, NY, and is better known as simply the Geneseo show.  Or as they tout it, the Greatest Show on Turf.  Not only are they expected to have four Corsairs, two Avengers, one Hellcat and one Wildcat at its July 11-12 show, but they have also booked the world's only flying Helldiver.  If that doesn't tickle your warbird fancy, there is something wrong with you.  For more information, click here.
