Mixed Results At New Flying Events from AVwebFlash Current Issue
Canada's first-ever EAA fly-in drew about 15,000 visitors for the inaugural event just over a week ago, but turnout was disappointing at a light sport aircraft expo in southern Illinois last week, according to the organizers of both events. Nearly 15,000 visitors turned up for the Wings Over Gatineau/Canadian EAA Convention/Fly-in in Ontario, EAA said. The event also featured a 70th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Britain. About 100 aircraft showed up despite foggy conditions that canceled some arrivals. The second annual Midwest LSA Expo was "wonderfully run," according to a report at bydanjohnson.com, but the hoped-for crowds failed to materialize; and while serious shoppers turned out to look, few seemed ready to buy. Challenging weather didn't help, with stiff winds and 95-degree temperatures for the show start. However, the organizers plan to try again next year, perhaps shifting the dates from Thursday-to-Saturday to Friday-to-Sunday.

FIFI Is Now Firing On All 72 Cylinders - And She’s Ready For You! from AirPigz
FIFI is now FAA approved with her modified R-3350 engines (photo: CAF)
The re-engine project for the Commemorative Air Force B-29 known as 'FIFI' hit a snag early in the flight testing phase. After the first flight on August 5, a pre-ignition problem on the number 2 engine damaged some of the cylinders requiring engine removal and repairs. But, on Friday September 24th, FIFI was back in the air for two flights, and the engines worked great. On the following day, a third problem-free flight satisfied the FAA that FIFI was once again ready to help tell the stories of the men and women who sacrificed their lives for freedom. ...

"Strega" at the 2010 Reno Air Races from Randy Rothhaar
Project Ornithopter from ornithopter.net
The purpose of this project is to achieve humanity's oldest aeronautical dream: flight with mechanical flapping wings. Many early aircraft concepts assumed that such imitation of birds and bats was the proper design direction. However, the challenge of achieving both efficient lift and thrust with flapping wings was far greater than simply using the wings for lift and providing thrust with a separate propulsor. This notion, first articulated by Sir George Cayley in 1799, provided the template for successful mechanical flight from the Wright Brothers to this day. ...

Demon UAV from Sulako's Blog (video and photos)
This is a new one. This model flew yesterday in the UK. It's called the Demon UAV.
So what's the big deal?
Well, it has no moveable control surfaces. That's right, no flaps, ailerons, elevators or spoilers. Just a wing, an engine and some holes.
First of all, the exhaust nozzle is moveable, so it can be vectored around to aid in directional control. Also, bleed air from an APU (auxilliary power unit, meaning a small engine) is blown through hundreds of tiny holes in the trailing edge of the wing to also help with directional control. ...
