ICAS AIR BOSS ACADEMY: LIMITED SPACE STILL AVAILABLE
ICAS has scheduled the 2010 ICAS Air Boss Academy for October 28, 29 and 30 in conjunction with the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show, Texas. Like the traditional ICAS Air Show Academy, the Air Boss Academy uses an actual air show to provide a small number of ICAS members with a unique opportunity to get a hands-on, practical air boss education.
Moderated by ICAS member and veteran air boss Wayne Boggs, the program will begin on the evening of Thursday, October 28 with an informal welcome reception. On Friday morning, participants will attend the pre-show performer safety briefing. After some classroom discussions and instruction, the entire class will move out to the flight line where they will monitor the air show radio frequency and discuss the details related to air bossing this particular air show.
As one of the most experienced air bosses in our business, Boggs will explain what the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show air boss does and why he does it that way. At the end of the first day, the group will return to the classroom to de-brief and discuss the day’s activities. On Saturday, the group will sit in on the performer safety de-brief and once again listen in as the air boss orchestrates one of North America’s finest air shows. The official program concludes on Saturday night.
Class size for this ICAS Air Boss Academy will be strictly limited to 15 participants. The fee to participate in this unique educational program is $300 per individual. And because ICAS expects an overwhelming response to this program and because we will cut off registration once the 15 person limit is reached, there will be no refunds on registration.
To reserve your spot, click here for a registration form or contact the ICAS headquarters office at 703-779-8510 or by e-mail at icas@airshows.aero.
HOST HOTEL LOWERS SLEEPING ROOM RATE TO $99
After some extensive negotiations with ICAS, the host hotel for the 2010 ICAS Convention has agreed to lower the group sleeping room rate to $99 per night.
“We keep an eye on market conditions in the days and weeks preceding our annual convention,” says ICAS President John Cudahy. “This year, the management at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel agreed that a price adjustment is in order.”
ICAS members who have already made their reservation within the ICAS block of rooms at a higher price will have their rate automatically adjusted to $99. Anybody who makes a reservation under the ICAS block of rooms during the next few weeks will receive the lower rate.
Telephone solicitations from organizations purporting to represent ICAS or the convention host hotel are scams. Terms are more restrictive and include penalties that rooms in the ICAS block do not include. We strongly discourage all ICAS members from making reservations in response to telephone solicitations.
JOHNSON, HUGHES, LEROY TO BE INDUCTED INTO AIR SHOW HALL OF FAME
Air show legends Harold Johnson, Joe Hughes and Jim LeRoy will be inducted into the ICAS Foundation Air Show Hall of Fame on the evening of Wednesday, December 8 at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel in Las Vegas during the annual ICAS Chairman’s Banquet.
An air show performer during aviation’s Golden Age in the 1930s and 1940s, Johnson is the only pilot to have flown aerobatics in the monstrous Ford Tri-Motor. A Chicago native and one of the air show community’s earliest sponsored performers, Johnson was renowned in the aviation community for both his skills as an aerobatic pilot and his participation in air races, flying his Continental Special racing biplane.
During the 1970s, Joe Hughes was among the most well-known air show pilots in the world. He developed and flew the 650 horsepower Super Stearman, making his mark principally with his wingwalking act. Hughes also flew with Art Scholl and Gary Barnhill as part of the Red Knights, a three-ship Pitts Special formation team.
A past recipient of both the Art Scholl and Bill Barber showmanship awards, Jim LeRoy was among the most innovative air show pilots of his generation. He dedicated a considerable portion of his career in the late 1990s and 2000s to increasing the entertainment value of civilian air show acts. Along the way, he thrilled millions with his unique brand of high-energy, low level aerobatics.
Johnson, Hughes and LeRoy will join a prestigious fraternity of air show legends that includes Charlie Hillard, Bob Hoover, Duane Cole, Bill Bordeleau, Leo Loudenslager, Jimmy Franklin, Paul Poberezny, Art Scholl, and Curtis Pitts.
SEVEN CANDIDATES RUNNING TO FILL FOUR POSITIONS ON BOARD
Three ICAS members have made use of the petition process explained in the ICAS Bylaws to have their names added to ballot that will be used to select four new members of the ICAS Board of Directors in December.
Air boss George Cline, air show announcer Larry Strain, and Dale Drumright from the Air Power over Hampton Roads air show at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia collected the signatures of ten ICAS members which qualifies them to have their name on the ballot.
They will join the four candidates selected by the ICAS Nominating Committee: Steve Brown from the Commemorative Air Force, Terry Grevious from the Vectren Dayton Air Show, Colonel Marcus Jannitto from the Rhode Island Air National Guard Air Show, and Dave Monroe from the Aerostars Formation Aerobatic Team.
The 2010 ICAS Board of Directors election will be held on Monday, December 6 and Tuesday, December 7 during the ICAS Convention in Las Vegas. Results will be announced on the morning of Wednesday, December 8 during the annual membership meeting.
Every ICAS member organization may vote for up to 4 board members, with the primary contact casting the organization’s vote.
As stipulated in Section 9 of the ICAS bylaws, the primary contact of every member organization in good standing of the International Council of Air Shows is eligible and encouraged to vote in the annual ICAS Board of Directors election. If the primary contact from a member organization will not be present, he/she may designate another representative from his organization to be the voting member at the convention by sending a letter and/or e-mail to ICAS headquarters not later than November 30, 2010. All voting will be conducted during the convention at a location established and approved by the ICAS Board of Directors.
REGISTER FOR THE ICAS CONVENTION PRIOR TO OCTOBER 1 AND SAVE $25
As we move into the last few weeks of the 2010 air show season, the attention of air show professionals throughout North America is turning to the annual ICAS Convention, scheduled this year for December 5, 6, 7 and 8 at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel. Indeed, members are registering at a near-record pace and all indications are that ICAS will welcome more than 1,500 delegates to its annual business meeting in December.
Widely recognized as the air show business community’s only “can’t miss” meeting of the year, the ICAS Convention has been providing air show professionals with educational programming, networking opportunities and a practical tool for running an air show business since the organization was formed in 1967.
To benefit from discounted registrations rates currently being offered, click here to register on-line today. The entire process will take you less than ten minutes. On October 1 registration rates go up $25.
ACC REQUESTS REQUESTS
Aerial events schedulers from USAF Air Combat Command have updated and improved the process by which they consider requests for single ship demonstrations during the 2011 air show season.

Requests for participation in air shows from July 1, 2011 through the end of November must be submitted not later than December 31, 2010. The USAF ACC demo schedule for the second half of the 2011 air show season will be released on March 15, 2011.
SIC APPLICATIONS DUE TO ICAS
Each year, pyrotechnic contractors serving as “shooters in charge” (SICs) must complete and submit an application with details on their experience and safety record to be included on the Shooter in Charge list that ICAS generates each year. If you are a pyrotechnics SIC and you would like to be included on this list, please click here for an application. To be included on this year’s SIC list, your application must arrive at ICAS headquarters not later than October 31, 2010. If you have additional questions about the SIC list or the application process, please contact Pyro Subcommittee Chairman Gordon Webb by e-mail at Email torapyro@springcom.com.
WAGSTAFF CONTINUES AIR SHOW FLYING
Three-time national aerobatic champion and Air Show Hall of Fame inductee Patty Wagstaff is not parking her Extra 300 just yet. In a short news item in the third quarter issue of Air Shows Magazine, ICAS inadvertently suggested that Patty’s air show days are finished. Nothing could be further from the truth. Like many of our industry’s finest performers, she is branching out. Her air show flying will continue as she also pursues her new work in the aerial firefighting business. Those interested in talking with Wagstaff about performing at their shows can reach her at pwas@aol.com. Our apologies for any confusion or misunderstanding that the story may have caused.

SEPTEMBER 30 IS MARKETING COMPETITION DEADLINE
The ICAS Marketing Competition is intended to do two things: recognize outstanding achievement in event, product and service promotion by air shows, air show performers and air show support services providers, and to expose our members to the wide spectrum of creative ideas that have proven successful to their peers. The Competition is an opportunity to let the rest of the industry see what you've done and an opportunity for you to see how your efforts measure up against those of your colleagues. Click here for a marketing competition brochure and application.
