... The exhibit is called Uncontrolled Airspace and it's instantly clear that its creator, Steve Mark, is an old-school shooter who favors a 4-by-5-inch view camera with the swings and tilts that correct for the distortion we expect from modern cameras with fixed lenses and focal planes. The lighting is also old school, carefully controlled and balanced to the surrounding daylight or darkness. Each image is carefully composed, as it must be when you only have one chance, one sheet of film to capture it. Each evokes nostalgic memories of aviation past, of airport picnics and dashing pilots climbing into an open cockpit. ...

Time For Some Noise from Windsor International Air Show by Century of Flight
The F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter designed to gain and maintain air superiority in aerial combat. Developed for the USAF it first flew in July 1972, and is one of the most recognized modern fighters. The F-15 is expected to remain in service until 2025. Despite originally being envisaged as a pure air superiority aircraft, the design proved flexible enough that an all-weather strike derivative, the F-15E Strike Eagle, was later developed, and entered service in 1989.
The F-15 in all air forces had an air-to-air combined record of 104 kills to 0 losses in air combat as of February 2008. To date, no air superiority versions of the F-15 (A/B/C/D models) have ever been shot down by enemy forces.
The Windsor International Airshow welcomes the pilots and techs from the 390 FS out of Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho.

Anyone who has been following the status of Rocketplane Global for some time knows the company has run into major difficulties because of problems raising money. (See this video interview with Rocketplane's Chuck Lauer from the Space Access '09 conference earlier this year.) But the company is getting renewed media attention recently, particularly in Oklahoma, because of its current situation. The Oklahoma Gazette reported earlier this month that the company moved out of its Oklahoma City offices in February. With most of its employees laid off, the company is now operating out of Wisconsin, where company president George French lives.

Weekly Update - 24July to 30July from CAF Minnesota Wing Blog by Commemorative Air Force, MN Wing
Good Afternoon Everyone!
Very little can top last week, considering the Red Tail's first flight, the B-52 flying with the B-25 and all the huge efforts involved to make those projects happen! It's been exhausting for all involved to accomplish these feats, so a bit of slow time is never a bad thing. Slow can be a relative term however. The B-25 survived a week long flying extravaganza in Sioux Falls, SD. The B-25 Crew flew an astounding 22 flights, and racked in $20,000 with tours, history flights and PX sales. Great work guys! The P-51C "Tuskegee Airmen" flew from North Dakota to Oshkosh, Wisconsin! Brad Lang, son of a Tuskegee Airman, has been checked out and did his first solo in the Mustang as well. The aircraft, as well as a number of Wing members will be attending Oshkosh

A QUIET HERO - The Times Picayune
Veteran Martin Richard has never really spoken much about his experiences during World War II. Relatives said he rarely ever mentioned the day his plane was shot down over France, or the nine months he spent as a German prisoner of war -- not even his participation in the deadly 86-day trek that surviving POWs would later call The Black March.
But as modest as Richard, 85, has always been about his efforts during the war, he could not downplay the monumental acknowledgment he and two other Louisiana veterans received last month. Richard was one of three Louisiana natives to be appointed chevaliers or knights of the French Legion of Honor during a lavish ceremony held the day before the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.
Richard sometimes manned the top gun turret on his B-24 Liberator during the 35 missions he and his crew flew. But that 35th mission turned out to be a doozy. On Aug. 14, 1944, Richard's crew had a bombing run near Cannes, France, that made them targets for German anti-aircraft artillery, he said.
"Our bombardier said, 'You know, we might get killed today.' But he said that every day," Richard recalled.
With a loud bang, gunfire took out two engines and the plane went down. Richard was panicked because he'd chosen an old parachute that he feared would fail him. Turns out the chute did just that until the last minute, but ended up saving his life.
"The others (whose chutes opened immediately) were in the air getting shot at," he said.
Richard's entire crew survived, but were captured by German troops. After being paraded around the streets of Paris in trucks and moved around to various farmhouses and make-shift dungeons, Richard was eventually crammed into a boxcar with other captured airmen and shipped by train to Stalag Luft IV, a prisoner of war camp in Gross Tychow, Poland, he said. ...
... After all these years, his daughter said there are still times her father will tell a story about the war that she has never heard. Richard said he and other veterans just didn't talk about it.
"We knew we had been through hell, but we didn't know that people were that interested in it," he said.

STREGA!!!! - Aviation Airshow Air Race Photography Discussion
I was on my way home from a four day houseboat trip. I look over and see two planes flying at Stregas base, Minter Field. I automatically drive over there and see that it was strega and Wee Willy a P-51 from Chino. As we get on the taxiway to watch they made a few high and slow formation passes. Preety soon Wee Willy made a speed pass and Strega a very high speed pass later on. Along with the passes they were practicing racing around a course in formation. As they taxiied in i noticed Kevin Eldridge was driving Wee Willy and Jr. was driving Strega. After they parked we saw Tiger arrive in his Tahoe after watching Jr. We said hi to both of them and then we were off. It was real sweet and may have been the trip highlight. Also in the hangar near where they parked was Czech Mate and the P-51 Man o War. Sorry i didnt have a Camera with me so i am real sorry i dont have pics.

Ex-POWs battle against time to tell stories from Air Force Times - News
DAYTON, Ohio — Museums are seeing an increase in donations and oral histories from the swell of former U.S. prisoners of war eager to leave their legacies. But museum officials still worry that too many POWs approaching their late 80s and 90s will go to their graves without publicly telling their stories. The National Prisoner of War Museum, in Andersonville, Ga., said it expects to have a 40 percent increase in artifacts, journals and other donations from former POWs this year compared to last year. Primarily, those contributions are coming from those who fought in World War II.The number of U.S. POWs in World War II, about 130,000, dwarfs those from other wars. There were about 7,000 POWs in the Korean War, and about 725 in the Vietnam War. World War II ended more than 60 years ago, and the number of U.S. POWs is shrinking fast.Bob Patrick, director of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress' American Folklife Center, said many aging POWs are just getting around to publicly telling their tales."Some of them will never get around to it," Patrick said. "It's too difficult. Some of them don't want to open the door again."When POWs returned from World War II, many kept their stories to themselves because they were afraid of being stigmatized, they didn't think there was anything unique or unusual about their stories, or they wanted to forget about the past and move on with their lives ...

Welcome to Airshow Traveler Magazine's Newsletter, Air Show Weekly, where we take a look at upcoming airshows and showcase current aviation topics.

All air show information listed is accurate as we know it.  Still, it is best to check with the individual air show to see if there are any changes.  Even then, scheduled aircraft may not appear due to bad weather en route, or because of mechanical breakdown.

Real Heroes - L. Kirk John

Michael Jackson is no more a hero than Michael Jordan.  The real heroes are the ones who put their lives on the line.  This is the first in a series of articles spotlighting the real heroes of combat.  First up is my good friend, L. Kirk John.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December, 1941, L. Kirk John was welding at Lukens Steel in Coatesville, PA.  Because he was a Navy certified welder, he had a deferment from being drafted into the military, but that did not stop him from joining the war effort.  He enlisted in September 1942, took operational training at Punta Gorda, FL, and then boarded the Queen Mary for Wormingford, England.

Kirk

In Europe, Kirk flew the P-51D Mustang with the 338th Fighter Squadron.  The 338th was assigned fighter cover for B-17 bombers crossing the English Channel into Germany.  Kirk encountered air to air combat on only his fourth mission.  His first aircraft, Krazy Kid, was shot out from under him on his tenth mission and he landed behind enemy lines near the Battle of the Bulge.  The Good Lord was with him as he made it back to safety with the help of villagers in Belgium.

When he returned to Wormingford he had a new plane waiting that he named Ornery.  On one mission with Ornery he found himself alone over Germany and running low on fuel.  He came to a coastline but did not know which coastline it was.  Rather than fly over water, he felt his safest bet was to double back and find an airfield to land on, hoping it was a friendly field.  God was with him again as he landed near Bordeaux, France.  After spending the night in a bombed out chateaux, villagers found him some gas for the Mustang and in the morning he took off across the Channel back to Wormingford.

With his new plane he continued on with the 338th completing 47 missions with 5 combat kills making him an ace.  When the war ended, Mr. John continued flying in the reserves but took time out to marry his lovely wife, Linda.  In June 1948, just after the birth of his son, Kirk left the Air Force to become an insurance agent for Prudential.  He and Linda still live in Coatesville.  They've been married for 62 years and they are a lovely couple and still very much in love.

L. Kirk John is as spry today at 90 years young as he was when he first joined the local YMCA 75 years ago.  He still swims 2-3 times a week and still fits in his service uniform.  Every June he puts on his uniform and spends a day at WWII Weekend in Reading, PA.  He does not go to the admissions gate, but instead goes to the performers gate.  No one ever stops him to ask for credentials, for he paid his credentials 65 years ago in WWII.

Admission:  Free

Canada continues to celebrate its 100 years of powered flight with another great air show, this one in Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada.  Besides the headliner Snowbirds, there is the special F-86 Sabre, Hawk One, as well as the specially painted Canadian Hornet.  The Pietsch brothers will be on hand for some aerobatics, as will Dan Buchanan and Bud Granley.

For us warbird nuts, the highlight of the show has to be a performance by the Avro Lancaster Mk.X bomber (C-GVRA, KB726).  It is one of only two Lancasters that fly.  The photo below was taken at the 2007 Gathering of Mustangs in Columbus, OH.

As of this writing, there is a very short list of performers for this year's Sea Fair.  The website says more performers will be added but it's less than a week to go for the show.  Looks like the northwest is struggling like the rest of the country.  Still, with the Blue Angels performing over the water, you can't go wrong.

It's been a long absence for a Texan II demo, but the Sea Fair website lists a pair scheduled to demo.  We hope so for we like this aircraft and was sad to see it taken off the Air Combat Command list of air show performers.  The photo below was taken at the 2006 Hill AFB air show.  it shows a T-6A Texan II (03-3681) from the 12th Fighter Training Wing at Randolph AFB, TX.

Oshkosh: Day 0 - The Drive from The PapaGolf Chronicles by DaveG
I started waking co-pilot Egg up at 0630 as planned. I say 'started' because it is a lengthy process. One of the (few) perks of aging is that it gets much easier to wake up in the morning. I haven't forgotten my own teen years, though, when it was routine to sleep in until late, late morning. Trying to get up at 0630 on those rare occasions when I had to was like trying to shake a wet blanket off the inside of my head. It's normal, but it does beg the question of exactly how teenagers survived in the wild, way back when. It seems to me they'd have been pretty easy prey. Seriously, why would a lion waste hours lying in wait for a careless gazelle at the local watering hole when he could just grab the nearest sleeping teenager?...

Lindbergh Grant in Aviation Awarded to Randall Fishman

Lindbergh Grant in Aviation Awarded to Randall Fishman

Project to Focus on Electric Propulsion of a Two-Seat Aircraft

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. (July 27, 2009) — The Lindbergh Foundation announced today that Randall Fishman, of Cliffside Park, N.J., has been awarded a 2009 Lindbergh Grant in Aviation for his project entitled, “Using Electric Propulsion in a Two-Seat Aircraft to Make Extended Flight Economical and Pollution Free.”

Global warming, air and noise pollution, and liquid fuel shortages are major factors facing the world today. They are also of major concern to the aviation industry. Gasoline-powered engines used in aviation are inefficient at producing mechanical power from fuel. Only 25% of the energy is used to propel the airplane, the rest is wasted in the form of heat, vibration and noise. To address these issues, Fishman plans to build a two-seat airplane, with some baggage space, which would be propelled solely by an electric motor and electronic motor control. The on-board 220-volt battery charger will be able to recharge the battery packs in three hours or less, and can be used with a 110-volt outlet, if necessary. This proposed electric propulsion plane would allow pilots to fly quietly on approximately $2 of electricity per two-hour flight, at current rates. The aircraft will produce no local air pollution, reduce noise to nearly zero, produce almost no carbon footprint and use no oil or gasoline. The results from this project will demonstrate that practical electric flight is possible today and may inspire others to begin converting to electric for at least a portion of the airplanes produced. If well received, electric aircraft could offer new ways for people to travel short-to-medium distances and if widely adopted, they would contribute to a cleaner, quieter environment.

Fishman received one of eight Lindbergh grants awarded so far this year. He was chosen from 133 applicants from around the world. Lindbergh Grants are made in amounts up to $10,580, a symbolic amount representing the cost of building Charles Lindbergh’s plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, in 1927. To date, nearly $3 million has been awarded to 300 researchers.

“Today’s students will share this planet with more than 8 billion people. If we are to sustain our species and our planet, it is imperative that we make full use of the one expandable resource available to us: human intelligence,” said Gregg Maryniak, Chairman of the Grants Committee and Vice Chairman of the Foundation. “The Lindbergh Grants program attracts researchers who are passionate about the environment and about finding solutions to protect and sustain our world.”

“As an unknown in aviation, Charles Lindbergh struggled to find the financial backing he needed to pursue his dream of making a non-stop, solo flight from New York to Paris. The Lindbergh Foundation Grants Program identifies and supports highly creative and dedicated researchers from around the world and provides them with the same opportunity for success as Charles Lindbergh received. That’s why the Lindbergh Grant is set at $10,580,” said Maryniak. “Many of our grant recipients are ‘unknown’ in their fields, too. For them, receiving a Lindbergh Grant provides much-needed credibility to their work and typically enables our recipients to secure additional funding, providing them with valuable leverage.”

The Lindbergh Grants program maintains an excellent reputation among the scientific community and the public sector for supporting exceptional, high-quality projects and dedicated researchers. Lindbergh grant applications undergo a rigorous five-step review process focused on evaluations by two independent all volunteer review groups, including a 62-member Technical Review Panel. This international panel is comprised of knowledgeable and respected individuals drawn from the various fields in which Lindbergh grants are made.

The annual deadline for all Lindbergh Grant applications is in mid-June for funding the following year. The extended deadline for aviation applications is Oct. 30, 2009, with funding in July 2010. Anyone interested in applying for this grant will find information and a downloadable application on the Internet at: www.lindberghfoundation.org.

Fishman will be giving a talk entitled, “Electric Aircraft: Advantages and Challenges” at the Learning Center, West of the Homebuilt area, on Tuesday, July 28 at 1 p.m.; and Thursday, July 30 and Saturday, August 1, at 11:15 a.m.

Lindbergh Foundation’s Film Over Africa!

Lindbergh Foundation’s Film Over Africa! Low and Slow with the Kenya Wildlife Service, To Be Featured At AirVenture 2009

Film Depicts How Aviation Supports the Environment

Minneapolis, Minn. (July 26, 2009) — The Lindbergh Foundation will show its new film, Over Africa! Low and Slow with the Kenya Wildlife Service, at the Theater in the Woods at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28. The film documents the training of 12 Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) pilots by Lindbergh Foundation volunteers, Patty Wagstaff, Rich Sugden, and Lindbergh Board members, John and Martha King. Accompanying the Foundation on this trip was author and wildlife biologist, Mark Ross. This exciting adventure was documented by Foundation Board member Miles O’Brien.

Funded this year by The Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation, with additional support provided by the David Clark Company, Wagstaff’s expedition was the most ambitious and successful ever. Joining Wagstaff in the flight training was air-show performer and vintage airplane owner Rich Sugden. Their air work was complemented with intensive ground-school classes from John and Martha King. “We were happy to be a part of the rigorous training that Patty Wagstaff brings to the KWS pilots,” said John King. “It was exciting to see how eagerly they listened and absorbed this new information. Clearly they knew this training would make them better and safer pilots.”

Professionally, KWS felt there was a need to enhance the recurrent training of their pilots. For Wagstaff, her passion for the environment is second only to the safety of the pilots. Acting on an invitation from KWS advisor and supporter Bill Clark, she took her sixth trip to Kenya this year to train the KWS pilots and make them safer. “Pilots aren’t always taught how to fly low and slow,” said Wagstaff. “The KWS pilots, however, commonly fly under 200 feet, so receiving aerobatic and maneuvering training is extremely valuable to them. Working with these pilots is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

“Charles Lindbergh made several trips to Africa in the 1960s and it was there that he came to realize that ‘all the achievements of mankind have value only to the extent that they preserve and improve the quality of life’ – all life, not human life, alone,” said King. “We believe the work of the KWS pilots who use the technology of airplanes to protect the animals from poachers is a perfect example of Charles Lindbergh’s “balanced” approach to environmentalism, which is the Lindbergh Foundation’s mission.”

Oshkosh Diary - Sunday July 26, 2009 from Letters from Flyover Country by Bob Collins
We amateur economists -- and these days, what economists aren't amateurs? -- have been figuring we'd use AirVenture as one of the barometers of house the economy is affecting people. After all, aviation isn't an essential and finding one's way to the middle of Wisconsin is an optional way to spend a week.
As evidenced -- sort of -- by the picture above, the early indication is more people will be at AirVenture this year than last year. Usually the field around where I set up camp each year doesn't fill up at my neck of the field until Sunday afternoon. But by Saturday afternoon this year, the tide of humanity has reached me. ...

As many of you know, I got a ride with The AeroShell Team at the Battle Creek Field of Flight Airshow and Balloon Festival this year. Although I've posted some frame grabs, I hadn't been through all of the video.
The video of my ride itself was pretty good, especially considering the fact that it was the first time I'd held the camera and not mounted it.. Even a 17-ounce rig gets pretty heavy at four Gs, especially if you're holding it out at arm's length to capture more in the shot.
But the real treat was the video from the performance on Saturday. In an Airspeed first, the AeroShall Team agreed to fly the camera in the No. 2 ship (which, in the AeroShell Team, is the right wing). I mounted the camera that morning, ran out onto the field and turned it on that afternoon right before the flight, and then retrieved it when the team returned. ...

update-since some of my preschool parents asked from Snow Eagles Air Racing Team
So after the race, life is beginning to resume back to what it was before. Squeege and I are both back to work. I have decided I want to race again next year. I don't think Squeege is going to, so I'm back to finding another partner. So I will be going to nearby airports and hanging flyers. I am going to race for a cause again next year, which I am really excited about next year's race-starts in Fort Myers, FL. I have gotten permission to race for Make-A-Wish foundation which means that I had to fill out paperwork and such and get an approval, in which the Nebraska Chapter has okayed. So once I get a partner, I can start fundraising. I am going to donate 50% of what is earned to the Nebraska Chapter Make-A-Wish foundation. See, the Nebraska chapter used to have a Fly'n for Make-A-Wish but the last time they did that was when I competed in 2007. ...

Satine's Big Bi-Plane Adventure!! by Satine
... Mike grabbed the towbar and brought her out. Then Kevin took out his checkbook and said, "You're going up!" "OMG!! NO WAY, REALLY??!!" I could not believe it!! I always wanted to since I saw the crop dusters in the valley flying over the freeway at 100 ft AGL or so!!
First, we had to talk about how to get me up in the cockpit. Only a few people here know, but I have a progressively degenerative neuromuscular disease related to ALS, Lou Gerhrig's Disease. They are still trying to figure out exactly what it is, but it has now affected my legs and I can't go up stairs. Mike and Kenny have had a lot of experience getting people a lot worse off than me into the aircraft, so I had nothing to be afraid of. We'd go slow.
After a safety review, and a parachute fitting, we got me into the aircraft. It took a while, believe me, but I was determined!! The final touch was the canvas helmet! Who cares about hair at that point!!! Smash it down!! Captain Mike was in the back, I was upfront. "Clear Prop" and Kenny hand-turned the prop over! ...

Naval museum likely to claim bomber if it is raised - Union-Tribune Staff Writer
SAN DIEGO — Is a custody battle likely between two aviation museums for the rare Navy SB2C-4 Helldiver bomber that's been resting on the muddy bottom of Lower Otay Reservoir?
Probably not, said retired Capt. Bob Rasmussen, director of the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fla.
Reached Friday at the museum, Rasmussen said it's "unlikely" that the San Diego Air & Space Museum will permanently keep the plane, which crashed in 1945 and remains buried in mud at the reservoir.
James Kidrick, president and chief executive of the San Diego museum in Balboa Park, said Friday that he would like to see the plane stay here.
Not happening, Rasmussen said.
"There are certain circumstances where it might be there for a while," Rasmussen said. "But fortunately, the Navy owns the plane. We may be able to arrange for it to be there (in San Diego) on loan for a while. But I told Jim that he'll get it when I'm 150 years old. The bottom line is this plane is rare, and this is the national aviation museum. It belongs here." ...

World War II: Little Boy = Big Devastation from About.com Military History
July 26, 1945 - USS Indianapolis delivers the "Little Boy" atomic bomb (left) to Tinian. Created during the super-secret Manhattan Project, Little Boy was the first atomic bomb produced by the United States. A "gun-type" atomic weapon, it required one piece of uranium-235 to be fired into another to create a nuclear chain reaction. Created by a team led by A. Francis Birch, Little Boy's design was not tested prior to construction due to a lack of uranium. While the bomb itself was built by May 1945, the uranium for its core was not available until July. Rushed to Tinian, it was assembled and ready for use by August 1. With the decision to employ Little Boy against Hiroshima, the bomb was loaded aboard the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay. Attacking the city on August 6, the bomb performed as planned, destroying much of the city and killing between 70,000-80,000. Little Boy was followed three days later by the use of the plutonium-fueled "Fat Man" bomb on Nagasaki. Combined, the two bombs compelled Japan to bring World War II to a close.

Pilot for a day leaves Andrews with memories for a lifetime from Air Force Link Top Stories
The flight suit she wore was just a little too big for her, so the pant legs had to be rolled up so as not to drag on the floor. And the black flip-flops she wore were a marked contrast to the heavy boots that most wear with a flight suit.
But as she strode into the headquarters of the 121st Fighter Squadron of the District of Columbia Air National Guard, the four stars on her blue garrison cap glinting from the overhead lights, those assembled to meet her sounded off with a loud call to "ATTENTION."

Amelia Earhart... October 2009 from You Fly, Girl by Cathy Gale
The movie based on the life of Amelia Earhart, called Amelia and starrng Hilary Swank and Ewen McGregor, is scheduled to be released in October, 2008.
I'm not actually sure who took the photo that I use to illustrate this particular entry, but I'm guessing, because of the stark contrast between black and white, that it was a famous celebrity photographer of the time, George Hurrell.
Amelia Earhart was born in 1897, to the daughter of a wealthy family. Unfortunately, things being what they are, not all wealthy people stay wealthy, and Amelia actually grew up in more of a lower-middle-class income stream, because her father had a drinking problem and couldn't keep a job. ...

Air Force Reserve to present aerial demo using new airborne firefighting system at EAA AirVenture

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – A 302nd Airlift Wing, Air Force Reserve Command, C-130 Hercules is scheduled to present a live-water, aerial demonstration drop upon its arrival to the 2009 EAA AirVenture on Monday, July 27 at Oshkosh, Wis. #OSH09

The water drop demo will showcase the capabilities of the U.S. Forest Service’s new Military Airborne Firefighting System equipment used by the Air Force Reserve. The ‘MAFFS II’ unit uses state-of-the-art technology which features several improvements to the aging legacy MAFFS system. MAFFS II enables C-130 tactical cargo aircraft to conduct more efficient firefighting operations from the air. This is the first year Air Force Reserve aircrews and maintainers have been certified with, and will use the new equipment.

“This equipment is the future of aerial firefighting,” said Lt. Col. David Condit, 302nd Airlift Wing Chief of Safety and MAFFS program manager.

C-130s equipped with MAFFS can drop up to 3,000 gallons of retardant to contain wildland fires in just a few seconds. There are eight MAFFS units available for use with military C-130 aircraft. The military aircraft are activated through U.S. Northern Command, based on an agreement with the Department of Agriculture.

The 302nd Airlift Wing is the only Air Force Reserve unit tasked with the MAFFS mission, making up for 25 percent of the overall military C-130 MAFFS capability. The 302nd AW takes on the MAFFS responsibility, while continuing to perform its primary mission of tactical airlift and airdrop. Additional MAFFS capability comes from three Air National Guard C-130 units.

MAFFS, a cooperative effort between the military and civilian land management agencies, provides additional airborne capability during periods of high wildland fire activity when civilian airborne fire fighting assets are exhausted. Efforts are directed to the protection and safeguarding of people and property anywhere in the United States throughout the annual fire season.

For more information on the water drop demo or for media wishing to interview MAFFS C-130 aircrew members prior to their departure from Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. or at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis. from July 27 to July 29, call the 302nd Airlift Wing Public Affairs Office at 719-556-4117 or the 24-hour public affairs cell phone at 719-339-1000.

Note: As of Friday, 24 Jul 09, the MAFFS II water drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Monday, July 27. The MAFFS II water drop demo is subject to change due to weather or mission requirements.

ICAS Fast Facts -- July 23, 2009

AIR SHOW ATTENDANCE CONTINUES TO TREND UP

Whatever the reason (and event organizers throughout North America have identified many different reasons), air show attendance continues to trend up throughout the United States and Canada as we pass the mid-way point of the 2009 air show season. >From Tacoma, Washington, Springfield, Missouri and Independence, Iowa to Dayton, Ohio, Detroit, Michigan and Pensacola, Florida, air show event organizers are reporting significant – sometimes even dramatic – increases in attendance.

“We continue to report these attendance increases as important news because the implications of the trend can be significant for those air shows that have not yet been held,” says ICAS President John Cudahy. “As an example, many of the air shows with increased attendance are also reporting horrific parking and traffic problems. For some shows, increased attendance might mean increased volunteer requirements or contingency plans for overflow parking. We want to make sure that our members are well aware of the trend so that they have
