New features to appear soon

First In, Last Out: Wild Weasels vs. SAMs

Wild Weasel Patch

The Wild Weasels in Southeast Asia created an essential and lasting capability for the U.S. Air Force. The Soviet SA-2 surface to air missile (SAM) threatened to halt air operations over North Vietnam. To suppress and destroy this threat, the U.S. Air Force countered with the courage and skill of the Wild Weasels, who flew some of the most dangerous missions in Southeast Asia.Though some believed that SAMs would be "the death of the flying Air Force," the Wild Weasels provided an effective counter, paving the way and protecting strike forces over North Vietnam. The Wild Weasels accomplished their mission at great risk to themselves -- 34 Wild Weasels were killed or missing in action and 19 became POWs. Click here for more information about the museum's exhibit on the Wild Weasels.

Sikorsky UH-19B Chickasaw

Two MATS Sikorsky H-19 helicopters completed the first transatlantic
helicopter flight. They touched down five times en route between Westover Field and Prestwick, Scotland. This proved the feasibility of ferrying helicopters overseas. One H-19 used in this mission, which was known as Project Hop-a-Long, is featured in the museum. (Information provided by Air Force Historical Studies Office)
