Richard Branson and "other dignitaries" are preparing to officially launch the ship at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California (a short drive from Zzyzx, we hear), and we're still being led to believe that test flights should begin as early as this fall. Hey, at least you know what you're doing next year if your ship comes in.

We will be in the company of folks that one can dream about. It will quite a week for both of us. 2008 Bill Barber Award Winner: Bud Granley

World Airshow News is very pleased to announce that Bud Granley has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Bill Barber Award for Showmanship.

Bud has been involved in one way or another with airplanes since he was only nine years old. He was outside playing with his brothers one day when they noticed a Tiger Moth biplane landing on their uncle’s farm. They were soon surprised to find out it was their father who was flying that plane. He had secretly earned his pilots license and would go on to make a career of flying. All three boys would also become flyers.

Bud joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1956 after earning his wings with a Royal Canadian Air Cadet scholarship. He flew the F-86 Sabre and later was a T-6 Harvard instructor in Red Deer, Alberta. There he began his airshow career as the solo demonstration pilot in the Harvard.

Today, Bud lives in Bellevue, Washington after retiring in 1997 from a successful career as a Captain for United Airlines. He has six children and three of them served in the Canadian Armed Forces. Two flew with the Snowbird aerobatic team, and are now airline pilots – Ross with United, and Chris with Air Canada. Deb flies the 737 for Alaska Airlines. Bob chose the Navy, and is now a Captain with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He also flies the planes to airshows when not sailing.

Bud is best known for flying the Harvard, Fouga Magister, and Yak-55 in airshows, but he also flies warbirds like the P-51, Skyraider, or Wildcat. He flies a formation act with his son Ross, with Bud in the Yak-55 and Ross in his Yak-18T. Bud is also a regular at the Reno Air Races, flying a T-6 named Lickety Split.

Bud was awarded the ICAS Art Scholl Showmanship Award in 2005.

The Bill Barber Award for Showmanship was founded by World Airshow News in 1986 to recognize those who do more than their share to promote the airshow industry. An election committee made up of past award recipients reviews nominations made by committee members and the industry at large. Nominees are not advised that they were nominated, nor is anyone told who nominated whom.

The award, named in honor of legendary performer Bill Barber, will be presented to Bud at a location and time to be announced.

Hangar 9 presents: the Fokker D VII 60 ARF, Germany's WWI Hero from Skycontrol by alain
The German Fokker D.VII is frequently cited as one of the best fighter aircraft of the First World War. But its story of inception is what makes it a supremely interesting subject. During the latter half of 1917, the Allies had regained air superiority over the Western Front with the S.E. 5 and the Spad fighters. To counter this, the German government invited aircraft manufacturers to submit prototype single-seat fighter designs for evaluation at a competition to be held at Adlershof airfield in Berlin in January 1918. The aircraft would be demonstrated by the manufacturers, and would be tested by front-line combat pilots. The design with the best overall performance would be awarded a production contract. Thirty-one airplanes from ten manufacturers entered the competition and the Fokker D.VII was the winner, earning an initial contract for 400 units.

Great Planes presents: P-40 Warhawk "Flying Tiger" almost ready to fly from Skycontrol by alain
In early 1942, the American Volunteer Group's success over China did wonders for U.S. morale following Pearl Harbor. The Flying Tigers and their shark-mouthed P-40 warhawks destroyed nearly 300 enemy aircraft while losing only 21 of their own. This sport-scale P-40 ARF does the WWII legend proud – with a high-quality design and the versatility to please every low-wing pilot. Great Planes includes a fiberglass cowl and lightweight, balsa/ply main structures covered in an attractive Flying Tigers trim scheme. The camouflage color scheme is topped off with such instantly identifiable details as this "Flying Tigers" insignia – lending just enough realism to turn each flight into a WWII adventure.

Award winning "They Flew Proud" tells WWII aviation story.

For Immediate Release

If the Indianapolis Air Show weekend just isn’t enough excitement for you, how about a historic preview?

The Wings of Freedom Tour of the WWII Vintage Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, North American B-25 Mitchell and North American P-51 Mustang Announce Unique Display in Mount Comfort at Mount Comfort Airport from August 1 to August 4

The Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour Brings Extremely Rare Bomber
and Fighter Aircraft for Local Living History Display as Part of 110-city
Nationwide Tour

WHAT: Participating in the Collings Foundation’s WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine” WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft” WWII Heavy Bomber, North American B-25 Mitchell WWII Medium Bomber and P-51 Mustang, will fly into Mount Comfort Airport in Mount Comfort, IN for a visit from August 1 to August 4. Local citizens will
have the opportunity to visit, explore, and learn more about these unique and rare treasures of aviation history. The B-17 is one of only 9 in flying condition in the United States, the B-24J and Dual Control P-51C Mustang are the sole remaining examples of their type flying in the World, and the B-25 is one of only a handful in flying condition. Visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out - $12 donation for adults and $6 donation for children under 12 is requested for access to up-close viewing and tours through the inside of the aircraft. Visitors may also experience
the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to actually take a 30-minute flight aboard these rare aircraft. Flight experiences are a tax-deductible donation. Flights on either the B-17 or B-24 are $425 per person. Flights on the B-25 are $400 for the front fuselage and $325 for the waist gun section
of the plane. P-51 flights are $2,200 for a half hour and $3,200 for a full hour. For reservations and information on flight experiences call 800-568-8924.

WHERE: The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR will be on display at Mount Comfort Airport
in Mount Comfort, located at 3867 N. Aviation Way. (KMQJ, Indiana)

WHEN: The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR will arrive at Mount Comfort Airport at 2:00
PM on August 1 and will be on display at Mount Comfort Airport at Mount
Comfort Airport until the aircraft departs August 4 at 12:00 PM. Hours of
ground tours and display are: 2:00 PM through 5:00 PM on Friday, August 1;
9:30 AM through 5:00 PM on Saturday, August 2; 9:30 AM through 5:00 PM on
Sunday, August 3; 9:30 AM through 12:00 PM on Monday, August 4. The
30-minute flight experiences are normally scheduled before and after the
ground tour times above.

WHO: The Collings Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit educational foundation
devoted to organizing “living history” events that allows people to learn
more about their heritage and history through direct participation. The
Nationwide WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR is in its 19th year and visits an average
of 110 cities in over 35 states annually. Since its start, tens of millions
of people have seen the B-17, B-24 & B-25 display at locations everywhere.
The WINGS OF FREEDOM tour is one of the most extraordinary and unique
interactive traveling historical displays of its kind.

WHY: The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR travels the nation a flying tribute to the
flight crews who flew them, the ground crews who maintained them, the
workers who built them, the soldiers, sailors and airmen they helped
protect; and the citizens and families that share the freedom that they
helped preserve. The B-17, B-24 & B-25 were the backbone of the American
effort during the war from 1942 to 1945 and were famous for their ability to
sustain damage and still accomplish the mission. Despite the risks of
anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the harrowing environment
of sub-zero temperatures, many B-17s, B-24s, and B-25s safely brought their
crews home. The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers “Little
Friend” - saving countless crews from attacking axis fighters. After the
war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum to rebuild a nation
in post-war prosperity and therefore very few were spared. The rarity of the
B-17, B-24, B-25 & P-51 - and their importance to telling the story of WWII
is why the Collings Foundation continues to fly and display the aircraft
nationwide. At each location we encourage local veterans and their families
to visit and share their experiences and stories with the public. For
aviation enthusiasts, the tour provides opportunity for the museum to come
to the visitor and not the other way around! Visitors can find out more by
visiting our website at http://www.collingsfoundation.org/ .

For further information e-mail Hunter Chaney, Director of Marketing:
hchaney@collingsfoundation.org

Media Site: visit: http://www.collingsfoundation.org/media for further
detailed information on the aircraft, Collings Foundation, and the tour as
well as high-resolution photos for download.

SpaceShipOne Returns to Mojave (well, sorta...) from Mojave Skies by Alan Radecki
It's baaack.... Well, in a sense. A replica of SpaceShipOne was installed today in the new Legacy Park at the Mojave Air and Space Port, which is nearing completion. Back in 2005, the X Prize Foundation commissioned several replicas of SS1 to be built for display purposes. One is now hanging in the main terminal of Meadows Field, Bakersfield. These replicas were built from fiberglass laid into the original molds which the real SS1 emerged from, and were produced by a team of interns. And the replica does the original one better: when the National Air & Space Museum hung the real SS1 from their ceiling, the stripped off all the sponsor's stickers...so much for preserving history as it happened, right? Well, the replica shows SS1 as she looked for her two history-making X Prize Flights, as well she should! Legacy Park is a joint project of the Airport Board and the Mojave Transportation Museum Foundation. The first display item, Rotary Rocket's Roton ATV was dedicated back on Veteran's Day, 2006. Eventually, the park will be encircled with miniature railroad tracks for use by a local live steamers club, celebrating the other transportation legacy of the Mojave area (the town was originally built in 1876 by the Southern Pacific Railroad). In the end, this (right) is what it's all about: even before the park is done and dedicated, a father and two sons passing through the area stop and look up, and maybe even dream…

GA Pilots Complete Around-The-World Flight from AVwebFlash Current Issue
"It was a great adventure," said Thierry Pouille, president of Air Journey, this week, after his small group of GA pilots completed the company's first-ever 10-week-long, 25,000-mile trip around the world. "We're all back -- and we're doing it again!" Pouille said the company will definitely offer the tour a second time in 2009. The six aircraft on this year's trip -- a PC12, two TBMs, a Cessna Conquest, a Cessna Mustang and a Duke Turbine conversion -- all completed the journey without any major mechanical problems or other setbacks, he said. "It takes a lot of organization and preparation and office support," Pouille said, to make the trip run smoothly and on time. "But it's been a fantastic experience." Since AVweb last checked in with the group, they have flown up the east coast of Asia via Taipei, Taiwan; Seoul, South Korea; and Vladivostok, Russia; then across the Bering Sea to Anchorage, Alaska. The pilots stopped in Juneau for a cruise and ended their journey in Seattle, then each aircraft headed for home.

Also we got to see the f-22 which is asolutely amazing. It really puts the f-16 and f-18 to shame. In addition to really neat performances we were in a special section with free food and drinks as well as practically front row seating. Aeroshell Aerobatic Team Lead Alan Henley Injured In Accident At Home

23 July, 2008 - News Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aeroshell Aerobatic Team Lead Alan Henley Injured In Accident At Home

For more information, contact: Greg Gibson, greg@aeroshellteam.com, (813) 507-1799

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Aeroshell Aerobatic Team Lead Alan Henley was injured Tuesday night in an accident while playing with his children at his home in Birmingham, Alabama. A chin-up bar gave way while Henley was on it, resulting in a fall which caused severe injuries to his neck and head. He was taken to the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital’s trauma unit, and remains there in ICU in serious but stable condition.

"Our prayers are with Alan and his family, and we are hoping for him to have a speedy and full recovery", said Steve Gustafson, Left Wing for the Team.

The Aeroshell Aerobatic Team is scheduled to fly at EAA’s AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, next week, the largest aviation exposition of its kind. "The show must go on," Gustafson said, "Alan will be missed terribly, but we will be there flying for him until he recovers." Gustafson went on to say that the Team will fly a three-ship routine, with Alan’s brother Mark in the lead, and himself and Gene McNeely filling in the Wing positions. All Team appointments and autograph sessions will be attended, and although Henley’s absence will be felt, Gustafson noted that the Team was obligated to their fans and sponsors to give them what they came for.

The AeroShell Aerobatic Team is a four-ship formation aerobatic team comprised of vintage North American AT-6 Texans. The Team delights millions of airshow fans across the U.S. each year, performing at a wide variety of locations. Veteran performers Alan Henley, Mark Henley, Steve Gustafson, and Gene McNeely form this unique squadron of aerial acrobats that has been a crowd favorite since 1985.

7/29 - Update:
Follow Alan's recovery HERE. Alan's wife is updating this blog with Alan's progress frequently.

Well wishers are sharing their best wishes on ASB, on this thread, also.

No Hope for B-52 Crew from Ares by Robert Wall
The U.S. Air Force has given up hope of recovering alive any of the six crew members that were onboard the B-52 that crashed Monday off Guam’s northwest coast. The service has now shifted its focus to recovery operations, closing down the rescue phase that was on-going since the aircraft went down around 10 a.m. local time. Representatives from the U.S. Navy. Coast Guard, Drug Enforcement Agency and local fire and rescue and police department were involved in the rescue effort. The body of two aircrew were recovered, as well as other body parts. One of the crew members has been identified as Maj. Christopher Cooper, the Air Force says, with the other name being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. For more on the incident and the B-52 safety record, click

New Area 51? Popular Mechanics Visits Mojave from Mojave Skies by Alan Radecki
In case you haven't haunted you local newsstand lately, Mojave is once again heralded in print, this time as the cover story in the August edition of Popular Mechanics, under the banner of "Inside the New Area 51: Mysterious Test Flights / Secret Prototypes / Next-Gen Spacecraft". Inside, despite the hype, is a fluff piece that does a reasonable job at giving an overview with only a small smattering of errors (ie, the article says there's only one large military contractor here...however, both Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems have operations here). XCOR and Gary Hudson's Protoflight are strongly represented, as are several other flightline companies, but the cover hype doesn't really do justice to the truly amazing things that happen here. The article mentions a visitor - the writer refers to him as either a tourist or an aviation paparazzi, a term I'm sure I've been called on occasion - on a Harley shooting his digital camera at the Rocket Racer through the fence...something that surely wouldn't happen at the real Area 51. Maybe I'm nitpicking, but it's not just the cover text that has my head shaking...it's the badly photoshopped cover art: since when does the sun rise occur so far north? (For the non-pilots, runway numbers reflect compass headings, and the artist made the sun come up at 030 degrees!) Mojave doesn't have a Runway 03, it has a Runway 08, and I suspect that in grafting in the image of the Rocket Racer, the artist took a little too much liberty. So, for the record, at the left is the real runway number, with the real Rocket Racing League Velocity SE touching down, albeit when it first arrived at Mojave and still had that ancient piston engine hanging off the back....

Discounted Indianapolis Air Show tickets now available in stores

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
July 22, 2008

Tina Noel, 317.709.3103

DISCOUNTED AIR SHOW TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE AT MARSH, O’MALIA’S AND UNITED PACKAGE LIQUORS
Buy at the stores, or online, and save money; charity event kicks off one month from today

(Indianapolis, Ind.) – The wait is nearly over. The 12th annual Indianapolis Air Show is just one month away.

To celebrate this “one-month-out” date, Air Show organizers announced today that discounted tickets are now available at Marsh, O’Malia’s and United Package Liquors stores.

If you buy your tickets in advance at one of these local stores, or online at
www.indyairshow.com, prior to the Aug. 22-24 Air Show, you will pay $17 for an adult ticket and $8 for a child’s (age 6 to 12). That’s a savings of $3 and $2, respectively, off of the price you’d pay at the gate.

No matter when you buy your tickets, though, one thing is for sure: they’re passes that will get you into the most spectacular Air Show in the Midwest!

The U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command F-22A Demonstration Team will headline this year’s charity event at Mt. Comfort Airport. The F-22A Raptor, a fighter jet that is truly a modern marvel of technology, tops an impressive list of performers that also includes the U.S. Army’s parachute team, the Golden Knights.

Recently added to this year’s Air Show is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) “Journey to Tomorrow,” an exhibit that is marking its 50th anniversary this year. Journey to Tomorrow will bring a 53-foot trailer that’s been transformed into an interactive environment packed with hands-on activities and learning stations.

Wingwalkers, stunt planes, a hot air “balloonathon,” Warbirds and additional military exhibits will also be featured during the 2008 Air Show. Among the others who have signed on: Gene Soucy and Teresa Stokes, Greg Poe, John Klatt, Michael Wiskus, sponsored
by Lucas Oil, and Greg Aldridge. And back again to lend his unmatched announcing skills to the event: Rob Reider.

The Air Show relies primarily on sponsors and volunteers to make their charity event happen every year, and 2008 is no different. The executive committee would like to thank Marsh, United Package Liquors and Indy Aero for their strong support.

Net proceeds from the Indianapolis Air Show go to the Central Indiana Community Foundation. The Indianapolis Air Show has donated more than $1.3 million through CICF to children’s charities since the show’s inception in 1997.

A US Air Force B-52 bomber has crashed off the coast of Guam in the central Pacific and there was no immediate word on the fate of the six crew members, navy officials said.

The crashed occurred at 9:45 a.m. Monday about 30 miles northwest of Apra Harbor, the Air Force said.

Dayton Air Show

Sometimes the event is more about the people you meet!

Roger and I flew out to the Dayton Air Show today and enjoyed a great show (thank you Jeff for flying us out to the show! We're not worthy!)

After the show we got to speak to Rob Reider and Danny Clisham, and quite a few of the photographers and gang from AirShowBuzz. Roger and I are on the far right. During the conversation, Rob and Danny were very humble about their winning the ICAS Sword of Excellence, stating that they felt many others have contributed much more to the air show community.

Some photos have already been posted on the AirShowBuzz thread for the Dayton Air Show and I'm sure we'll get Roger's photos up soon also.

Airport board retains name but honors hero from IndyStar.com Business Headlines
Advocates seeking a name change of the new Indianapolis International Airport to honor Hoosier aviator and war hero Col. H. Weir Cook didn't get all they wanted, but they got plenty.

Colonel H. Weir Cook Terminal official from WISH - Latest News Headlines
The Indianapolis Airport Authority Board voted Friday morning to name the new terminal and the road to Indianapolis International Airport after flying ace Weir Cook. The airport's official name will still keep its current name.

Airport Terminal named for Weir Cook from The Digital Farmers Blog by Sir Hailstone
According to the IndyStar, the Airport Authority upon debating the City-County Council resolution presented to them has decided not to rename the entire airport "Weir Cook Airport" as it was in the "old days" but rather rename the main terminal "Weir Cook Terminal at Indianapolis International Airport" and one of the airport roads to be named "Weir Cook Drive". That's a doable and a fitting honor for one who, in my opinion, was slighted by having his name removed from the Airport in the first place.
