Curtiss MF Boat — first trainer to the first flying boat pilots from Travel for Aircraft | Glenn Curtiss and U.S. Naval Aviation quickly formed a symbiotic relationship and, as early as 1911, Curtiss soon began developing seaplanes — both float planes as well as flying boats, even amphibians. Early seaplanes from all designers were essentially boat hulls mated to wings and the Curtiss MF Boat was no exception. Taking the wings off the MF Boat design, though, shows Curtiss’s advanced design for the day with a hull that would hydroplane, getting the aircraft onto its step allowing for greater water speed until the airplane could fly off the water.
