Swedish Air Force Historic Flight Preserves Sweden’s Unique Military Aviation Heritage By Warbirds News | In a relatively short time, the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight (SwAFHF) has built an impressive collection of airworthy warbirds, documenting the proud history of Flygvapnet, the Swedish Air Force. Though a relatively small country and officially neutral through both World Wars and into the Cold War, throughout the 20th Century Sweden inhabited a very dangerous neighborhood indeed. Unlike most countries their size, the Swedes were able to rely on their domestic aviation industry, Saab most particularly, to produce world-class fighter jets in those years when they once again found themselves sandwiched between the front lines of a global conflict. The SwAFHF has become the...

Novel captures semi-historical flights of fancy - The Telegram | A few years ago, Harbour Grace hosted a celebration of Amelia Earhart’s 1932 cross-Atlantic flight, and I interviewed a women who had presented Earhart with a bouquet of flowers. Even to meet someone who had briefly encountered the gallant aviatrix was a thrill, so count me in the Earhart fan club. Earhart’s fame was, in some ways, as carefully calibrated as her flights; she knew her attractiveness was important, not to her but to her goal of building training and employment for female pilots, and was aware of how she was photographed....

Solar-powered UAV could fly in the upper atmosphere for 5 years at a time - Gizmag | Conventional satellites may be decent at their jobs, but they do have some drawbacks – the spacecraft themselves are quite expensive, getting them into orbit is also a costly process, and they can’t be reclaimed once they’re in use. Titan Aerospace, however, is offering an alternative that should have none of those problems. The company’s Solara unmanned high-altitude aircraft is intended to serve as an “atmospheric satellite,” autonomously flying in the sky’s upper reaches for as long as five years continuously....
