Chicago Air & Water Show adapts to loss of Thunderbirds, other military acts - Chicago Tribune | Vintage aircraft and elite parachutists will slice through the skies above North Avenue Beach next weekend during the Chicago Air & Water Show, but it's not enough for Chris Connelly. Without military headliners like the Air Force Thunderbirds roaring through the air, the father of two says making the trip from Palatine isn't worth it....

Pilots to compete in aerobatic contest in Chatham-Kent - Chatham Daily News | Loops, rolls, spins and various combinations of those maneuvers is how Bill Ludwig describes precision flying. As a professional pilot, Ludwig has been participating in aerobatic competitions since 2006 and said it has added “a whole new level” to his flying experience. “Suddenly you’re flying in three dimensions rather than two,” he said. “It requires considerable discipline to fly an (aerobatic) sequence in the correct order, in the right direction.” Ludwig referred to precision flying as a cross between figure skating and platform diving, and it’s these complex plane aerobatics that will be coming to Chatham-Kent on August 23-25 at the municipal airport....

He was a party to Alexander Graham Bell's Aerial Experiment Association (AEA) as early as 1907 and greatly assisted Glenn Curtiss in his early days. He was Canada's fist pilot, the first British subject to fly and flew from Florida to Cuba in 1911 (no mean feat given aircraft reliability of the day). He was awarded the McKee Trophy in 1959 for his 1909 flight with the AEA Silver Dart (one of the first successful aircraft of the AEA)...
