The Museum soars into March with a full weekend of amazing programs. In honor of Women's History Month, the Museum features two space exploration pioneers in a public program on Saturday, March 5. Wally Funk is a legendary commercial pilot and flight instructor. She is one of the First Lady Astronaut Trainees/"Mercury 13" women who passed the same tests as the NASA Mercury astronauts in the early 1960s. Z. Nagin Cox is part of the mission operations team for the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity program. The program is at 2 p.m. in the William M. Allen Theater. Please note that cosmonaut Elena Kondakova will not be participating in the program as previously announced. On Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6 the world of silent flight is celebrated at Soaring Expo 2011. Exhibits include full-size gliders, radio-controlled gliders and the debut of a permanent display of the Museum's record-setting Perlan I glider. Seattle-native Einar Enevoldson and adventurer Steve Fossett flew the Perlan I to a world altitude record for gliders in 2006. Lectures, movies and presentations will be offered all weekend.
Amazing Skies Theater, the Museum's resident theater troupe, presents "Night Witches" the story of the only women pilots to fly combat missions in WWII. Known to the Nazis as "Night Witches," these Soviet women played a decisive role in Russian military aviation. The performance is Saturday, March 5 at noon in the William M. Allen Theater.
Beginning this weekend, the Museum's Bank of America Weekend Family Workshops crew is adding the "Magic Flying Carpet Storybook" program before the morning workshops. From 10:30 to 11 a.m., children and parents can sit on our magic carpet and listen to stories of flight from around the world. Stories reflect the theme of the weekend which in March is "Gliderama!" Get the scoop on these amazing aircraft, and find out why this type of flying is called the "silent sport"--then make your own high-flying paper glider! Workshops are at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
On the Radar: On Saturday, March 12, pilot and former astronaut Robert L. "Hoot" Gibson visits the Museum to discuss his remarkable career in aviation and aerospace, including five flights on the space shuttle, four as commander. The program is at 2 p.m. in the William M. Allen Theater.
