If you are fascinated by lost treasures and historical finds, join us Saturday, April 2 at 10 a.m. for our Living History Event "Recovering Lost Aircraft" featuring writer Peter Stekel, author of "Final Flight", and Fred Hagen of Aero Archaeology, who was instrumental in recovering "Swamp Ghost". Stekel will describe efforts being undertaken to recover historic aircraft that has been lost in the wilds, waterways and glaciers of the world for decades, while Hagen will illustrate the difficult conditions and challenging obstacles that faced their crew while excavating the B-17E that was lost for decades in a swamp.
Planes of Fame is lucky enough to be current home to "Swamp Ghost". Lost in the first American bombing raid in the South Pacifice, the B-17 made a forced landing in a swamp in Papua, New Guinea on February 23, 1942. The heroic efforts to rescue "Swamp Ghost" are a story in itself - matched only by the bravery and heroism of Captain Fred Eaton and his crew. Lost for 30 years, this historic aircraft is one of our featured displays at Planes of Fame. The history and plight of the recovery of this aircraft will be discussed during this fascinating and informative seminar. A demonstration flight of one of our aircraft will begin at noon.
