The Beginning of Biplane Racing at Reno from The Pylon Place
The first Air Races in Reno started in 1964. Most of you know the story of Bill Stead and his dream to recreate the Cleveland Air Races in the high desert. But, not many of you know how the Biplanes became part of the project.
Legend has it that Bill Stead went to the Merced Antique Fly-In in 1964 and met up with Sandy Sanders. Sandy was there announcing for several of the Air Show Acts. Bill was there to promote the upcoming Races and to look over some of the acts with an eye on booking them for the Races. Should the USAF ban flying displays by large aircraft? from The DEW Line
ABC News aviation consultant and career C-141 pilot John Nance believes so.
Breaking from a book-writing holiday in Cabo, Mexico, yesterday, Nance told me the C-17 crash video and full report by the accident investigation board show the US Air Force leadership is broken.
"Here we go again," Nance said. "This is going to put aerial demonstrations for large airplanes under scrutiny. I think they need to stop."
The C-17 crash on 28 July at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, occurred as the pilot practiced a self-planned routine for the upcoming Arctic Thunder air show, according to the USAF AIB report. In an effort to "put on a good show", the pilot's routine pushed the aircraft to edge of its performance envelope, including a maneuver that ...

New Book Encourages Others: “You CAN be a Pilot!” from The Mach 1 Blog
As pilots and aviation enthusiasts, we know the joy and passion of flying. There is something unique about flying that motivates us to want to share this passion with others. For many people, the notion of becoming a pilot seems so large, so difficult, so “out there” that they simply don’t stop to really investigate or consider it. Instead, even if they have the time and the means to become a pilot, they often choose to buy a motorcycle or a jet ski and ignore the yearning they have to fly. ...

Lockheed Cross-Breeding Raptors, Joint Strike Fighters from Danger Room
...The main idea: to make the F-22 more like the potentially cheaper F-35 Joint Strike Fighter that’s taking the Raptor’s place in Pentagon budgets. Not too long ago, the Pentagon defended its decision to curtail the F-22 program by claiming the F-35 was more modern. F-22 boosters countered that the Raptor could do things the F-35 couldn’t. If Lockheed’s plan moves forward, it could ...
