Behind the scenes at Reno  from General Aviation News by GAN Staff | Heroes abound, while initial races featured international flavor | By ANITA C. INFANTE By now, news of the Sept. 16 crash at the Reno National Championship Air Races has made its way across the country and through the international media. The flurries of reports, video and photographs from the scene have resulted in off-the-cuff opinions and speculation as to the possible causes. Even now, as the number of front page headlines decrease, the stark reality is that, for the first time in the 48-year history of the Reno Air Races, spectators lost their lives, in addition to an accomplished race pilot. For those in the air race community, whether associated with a team, as a volunteer, a local area service or supporter in the stands, this was a devastating event. With the widespread coverage the crash has received, it would seem that there is little more to be said, but those who were on site working behind the scenes should be noted. Continue Reading »

Aluminum Overcast: So There I Was…  from The Unwanted Blog | A bit less than a year and a half ago, I stumbled across the B-17 Aluminum Overcast purely by chance: I was in Logan, Utah, and saw a B-17 fly over. As anyone would, I drove to the nearest airport, and there it was. I took some photos, and that was about it.  Last Saturday, a visitor pointed out a newspaper article mentioning that Aluminum Overcast was in West Jordan, Utah, and was available to take paying passengers up for a flight the next day. A decision was made (in about a tenth of a second) that we’d reserve a few seats…

Friday Fabulous Flyer and BOOK Giveaway  from Flight To Success by Karlene Petitt | Imagine a little girl born in rural East Texas, growing up on a dirt farm with a God-fearing, ranting, father who lived with a bottle to his lips for the mistake he’d made by spawning this child. Dragging her to tent revivals to kill his demons, he punished her for his sins. Picture a little girl who had nothing but rags on her back, who would punch a little boy in the nose for making fun of her for not owning a pair of shoes. Imagine the early life of Sally Ketchum…

13,140 Horsepower  from Helikopter Hysterie - The Helicopter Blog by Axel | These photos are from the 2009 Selfridge Airshow in the Detroit area, Michigan. That year a US Navy Sikorsky MH-53E Sea Dragon was on display. We had a photo of it before and today we share all of the other ones I have, high resolution, uncropped. Until you see some of the photos below, it's hard to judge what size the parts are in the photos. In the above one, a 6 ft person could easily fit into the frame standing upright. You can see the massive main rotor assembly of the Sea Dragon, with seven (7) main rotor blades which are driven by three (3) GE turboshaft engines with 4,380 shp each (total of 13,140 hp or as much as twenty six (26) 2012 Chevy Corvette Z06s)…

Nieuport 28C-1  from Travel for Aircraft | Ironically, although the USA first demonstrated controlled flight under power (thanks to the Wright Brothers) the nation went to war in WW I with an inexcusable technological disadvantage behind France, Great Britain and Germany (also thanks to the Wright Brothers).
