Grumman F3F — the Navy’s last biplane fighter  from Travel for Aircraft | This Grumman design continued from the FF (Fifi”) and F2F with its large engine and robust full bellied fuselage as well as characteristic landing gear (which had to be hand cranked by the pilot, one side at a time while climbing, flying, getting into formation and whatnot). The F3F would also be the last biplane fighter design, too, but with a fully enclosed cockpit. The aircraft pictured in this post is displayed in the National Naval Aviation Museum — but there is also an amazing story about the recovery of this particular airplane on the museum’s web page of the F3F
