A member of the World War II Flying Tigers was honored Saturday as New York Military Institute's Distinguished Veteran of the Year.
From 1943-45, retired Capt. Howard Lasker, 90, of Albany, served in Sian, China, where he was commanding flight control officer of an American fighter squadron that intercepted Japanese planes trying to attack the Chinese mainland.
For many years after the war, he's been an active veterans advocate, volunteering at the Veterans Center and VA Hospital in Albany, where he served as Jewish chaplain, and earning the prestigious Four Chaplains Award.
"I didn't fly," Lasker said of his World War II experience. "I worked with Chinese ground observers. I would plot calls, decide where I thought the Japanese targets were and then send our planes up to intercept them. It was part of the defense of northern China."
The fighting and personal sacrifice that occurred there are largely forgotten, overshadowed by major theaters of operation in the Pacific and Europe. Lasker, however, recalls with vivid clarity the action that took place more than 60 years ago. ...
