Photos: WINGS OVER THE BEACH 2014 * Spectrum Photography | The Military Aviation http://the-spectrum-photo.com/mam_2014.htmlMuseum was born from a passion for World War II-era aircraft, and over the years, it has grown into a truly living history museum that rivals any other of its kind in the world. The first aircraft in the collection was the Curtiss P-40 salvaged from the tundra in Siberia, Russia. Each aircraft, whether salvaged in pieces, found derelict in an old barn, or purchased from another museum’s collection, has been meticulously restored by military aviation engineers and experts. Over the years, the museum has grown from a small, private grass airfield in the Pungo community of southeastern Virginia Beach to a complex of four hangars, museum space for the non-flying pieces of the collection, and a maintenance hangar and several storage buildings.

Historic Aircraft Brings Back Memories - The Independent | Our reasons for being there were wildly different. And, exactly the same. Craig Rembold's father had been a ball-turret gunner on a B-17 during WWII. Barbara Walsh's husband was on a B-17 when it was shot down over the Mediterranean Sea; the non-swimmer managed to stay afloat by dog-paddling for four hours before help arrived. Michelle Leiphardt's Belgian mother fled to the south of France when the Germans tried to round up workers for their factories; later she met her future husband, a U.S. Army Captain who'd landed at Normandy, in an ice cream shop, then sailed with other war brides to New Orleans. Paula Durnian's father had been a radioman on a naval ship in the South Pacific. My own father awoke on his 7th birthday to discover his mother crying in their Munich kitchen, her hands covering her face but unable to restrain her grief; World War II had just begun...

(The patent is now missing, but more on that later.)...
