Dayton, Ohio – Vectren Dayton Air Show officials announced today the addition of three flying attractions for the 2012 event, which will be held on July 7th and 8th at the Dayton International Airport. Two historic aircraft, the J-3 Piper Cub and the Tuskegee T- 6 Texan will celebrate their respective heritage along with a modern-day demonstration of the US Coast Guard’s HH-65 Dolphin at the 38th annual event.
Officials also announced today that the Brazilian Air Force Smoke Squadron will not be appearing at the 2012 show. The Brazilian Embassy in Washington D.C. notified the Air Show yesterday that due to recent budget constraints, the team would not be able to participate in this year’s event.
However, the iconic yellow J-3 Piper Cub will be celebrating its 75th anniversary at the 2012 Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger. Built between 1937 and 1947 by the Piper Aircraft Company, the Cub was originally intended for flight training. However, due to its simplicity and affordability, the Piper Cub became one of the most popular and best known light aircraft of all-time. Air Show spectators will witness the Cub in the air as well as be able to get a closer look at the aircraft on static display.
Another glimpse of history will occur as a T-6 Texan, owned by the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Museum, flies in the Show each day. This rare aircraft is one of two existing T-6 airplanes that were flown by the Tuskegee Airmen. Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American combat pilots trained for the United States Army Air Corps and fought in WWII. A training aircraft, the T-6 appearing at the Vectren Dayton Air Show was delivered in 1943 to the Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama. Nicknamed the “pilot maker”, the T-6 was used for training until 1945. Like the Cub, the Tuskegee T-6 will perform in the air as well as participate in a Tuskegee Airmen display.
Contrasting the aircraft of yesterday, the US Coast Guard HH-65 will demonstrate today’s Coast Guard helicopter and its search and rescue capabilities. The Eurocopter HH-65 Dolphin is a twin-engine, single main rotor helicopter that normally carries a crew of four: Pilot, Copilot, Flight Mechanic and Rescue Swimmer. Along with Search and Rescue (SAR), the Coast Guard uses the HH-65 for homeland security patrols, drug interdiction and ice breaking.
