Now, let me present a question to the air racing fans - do you ever recall a time in the last five to ten years when air racing received this much press (see above)? Last year there was more hype in Reno than normal because of the movie Thunder Over Reno, but I don't think it received the amount of press like we see presented above. Noteworthy is the fact that Red Bull spends a lot more advertising money promoting their series. The difference in marketing dollars is very apparent when you compare the two websites, too.

Having grown up in Reno and being able to watch the air races from my rooftop as a kid in Lemmon Valley, I'll admit that I am biased toward the Reno Air Races. I still believe that the sights and sounds of the planes racing around the pylons together adds to the excitement the fans experience, regardless of what class is on the course. No, I haven't been to see a Red Bull Air Race yet. Yes, I want to see the Red Bull Races (hey, I'm an aviation fan!), but it doesn't look like it will be this year, despite the fact they are so close to Indianapolis this year.

While going through the news tonight I experienced two emotions. The first was amazement. I was marveling at how well Red Bull has promoted their series. The second was disappointment (anger? frustration? I know, more emotions). Why don't the Reno Air Races get this kind of attention? Couldn't one argue that they've been the "Formula One" of the skies for a lot longer, flying the same types of planes (in one class). Then we can add to that fact that they have five other classes of racers as well. Biplanes, T-6s, Jets, Sports and Unlimited.

I'm not the first one to make any of these points either. Last year, just before the Reno Air Races, a number of air racing fans debated this issue on
AAFO on some of the following threads:

Now, some of the contributors on AAFO have pointed out some good counterpoints that fans like me don't really consider. The most compelling point I saw in one of the threads noted above was that Reno is a small market and when it is time for the Air Races, the area truly becomes challenged to accommodate the event (hotel rooms are always full). I might add that city has done well at hosting the event over the years also. I've always had a good time when I've returned to the city.

How about some TV coverage? Red Bull is getting it. If the Reno area is at capacity when the Reno Air Races are in town, could the event benefit from some kind of TV contract?

So, now you know how I feel? How do you feel? Comments on this thread are open, or feel free to email me at msouders@indyairshow.com

Grace on Wings comes to the rescue

Indianapolis - Happy reunions are synonymous with air travel. Indiana pilot Hal Blank stands inside the Hawker Beechcraft hanger in Indianapolis on a rainy day. He is getting his MU-2 airplane, nicknamed "Nellie," ready for a special reunion on May 14, 2008.

"I am listening to the gear box as I'm turning this to make sure it's nice and smooth," says Blank as he checks the prop. Blank carefully examines the blue and white airplane with a cross on the tail before taking off on a 2,200 mile journey that will reunite a Washington teenager with his parents.

Life has not been very smooth for 17-year-old Casey Lang. In 2004, Casey was diagnosed with a thyroid condition that often prompted occasional seizures.

On September 3, 2006, Casey visited his father who was working in Indiana. During the visit, Casey suffered a seizure that was resistant to medication. That seizure lasted nearly 15 hours and put Casey in a coma.

"He had a significant brain injury during the event and left him on a ventilator that left him entirely dependent on life support," says Blank.

On January 2, 2007, Casey moved from Riley Hospital for Children to a medical facility in Shelbyville, Indiana. Casey's parents wanted their son back in Washington, but their insurance would not cover the $30,000 air ambulance charge. They stayed with their son in Indiana as long as they could but eventually moved to Seattle while Casey stayed at the Especially Kidz Health and Rehab Center in Shelbyville.

"On the front of his chart, it said 'Don't tell him we had to move back to Seattle,'" recalls Blank. "I mean, that was heartbreaking. Heart wrenching. Can you imagine, having to leave your loved one behind?"

Hal had an answer. It included wings and a prayer. His ministry, "Grace on Wings", is a faith-based air ambulance service. It is designed to provide cost-effective transport for people needing to travel throughout the Midwest for medical treatment. The air ambulance helps patients who are too ill for commercial flight, too ill for long distance ground transportation and unable to afford transportation to access critical medical care.

Casey's parents learned about "Grace on Wings" (www.graceonwings.org) and made contact in hopes of getting help. Their prayers were answered. Hal Blank already had a fundraising trip scheduled for the West Coast. Casey's flight from Indy to Seattle was funded entirely by donations. The typical mission costs $15,000. The medical personnel are volunteers.

"Like it says on the door, we are showing God's grace through aviation," says Blank. "Every patient that we transport will be prayed over."

Pastor Gary Walker of Grace Evangelical Church in Indianapolis was one of the "Grace on Wings" staff members who greeted Casey when Shelbyville Fire Department paramedics brought him in an ambulance to the Indianapolis hanger. Walker led a prayer as Casey lay on a stretcher.

"Father, we thank you for Casey and his life," Walker prayed as the rest of the team bowed their heads. Casey began to smile when Walker mentioned the journey home.

"Thank you that he can go back and be with his mom and his dad," Walker prayed. "We pray that you will give him a safe flight and that you'll watch over him."

team loaded Casey on to the air ambulance for the long flight. Casey's favorite stuffed animal - a green monkey - sat next to him on the flight. The air ambulance has a specialty cot, oxygen and medical monitoring equipment plus two medical personnel to treat one patient.

"It is a 2 to 1 ratio on care on the aircraft for acuity level, so they are getting the best possible care and the best possible treatment en route," says Blank.

Before the flight, doctors determined that Casey could be off ventilator support during the daytime. Blank's wife Tamara, who is a physician assistant, monitored Casey during the seven hour flight and provided him oxygen and medication. Paramedic Eric Frantz and co-pilot Michael Meister were also on board.

"He (Casey) does have a trach, so we will be doing some trach suctioning and monitoring his blood pressure, O2 stats - carbon dioxide level - anything like that in flight," says Blank who piloted the plane for much of the 2,200 miles. 20 months after suffering the seizure that put him in an Indiana hospital, Casey arrives at Boeing Field in Washington. He is finally home.

Casey's step mother, Pam Niesler and Casey's father, Kevin are on the tarmac when medical crews unload Casey from the plane in Washington. "Finally home after all this time," says Kevin Lang. "Hi Casey. Good to have you home buddy," says Kevin smiling at his son.

Paramedics will transport Casey to Seattle Children's Hospital. Eventually, Casey will move to Ashley House near Olympia, Washington closer to his family.

"Now, I can see him every day," says Neisler. "When I was back there in Indiana, I saw him every day. We had to come back here. I'm just glad he's back home."

"He (Casey) needs to be with his family," says Blank. "He needs the support of his family."

Casey's medical care will continue near the people who love him thanks to people who loved doing it for him. A family back together because of Hoosiers who believe in faith and reunions.

"They are so grateful. And, it's not for us. We want all the honor and glory to go to the Lord," says Blank. "I am just so thankful we can provide this service today and get him out there and be reunited with his family."

"Grace on Wings" completes its 12th mission with plans for future reunions.

"For us, it is a great feeling of accomplishment. And a great feeling of fulfillment to bring families back together," says Blank.

WWII-Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon, Hot Stuff

Press Release
American Military Heritage Foundation
Mt. Comfort Airport, Greenfield, IN
www.AMHF.org
Contact: Penny Litz, President
760-835-7529
Indiowrite@aol.com

Mt. Comfort Indiana (May 23, 2008) The American Military Heritage Foundation’s WWII-Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon, Hot Stuff – the only one currently flying – has been temporarily grounded with an engine problem. Repairs to bring the engine within service limits are estimated to be $20,000 and could be completed this year if funding can be secured soon.

“This is a small amount of money, compared to what a complete overhaul would cost,” said John Parka, AMHF board member. “We hear those are running around $60,000; we’re trying to be cost efficient and this would give us a good safe engine. We’d prefer one in a can that the Navy overhauled and preserved in the 1950’s, - they did a great job back then – but the R-2800-31 is hard to come by and the price of one, if it’s to be had, approaches that of an overhaul.”

Anyone interested in making a contribution can call 760-835-7529 or go to the website www.amhf.org. “All we would need is 200 people making a $100 contribution and we’ve already got a small jump on it”, said Parka. The AMHF is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, and all contributions are tax-deductible.

The Harpoon’s last show flight was in July 2007, when she made an appearance over downtown Indianapolis during a parade honoring the surviving crewmen of the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (www.ussindianapolis.us). It was a PV-1 Ventura, the Harpoon’s predecessor, which found the men of the torpedoed ship after 4 days in shark-infested waters. Both organizations are based in Indianapolis, IN.

The PV-1's and PV-2's were used during the war in a variety of roles, serving as long-range maritime patrol aircraft, medium bombers, night fighters, and submarine hunters. They patrolled the eastern seaboard including South America, served throughout the Pacific theater, and protected the U.S.-owned Aleutian Islands. “Everyone knows that the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor, but few people remember that they seized Attu and Kiska (in the Aleutian chain, off Alaska) in 1942,” said Penny Litz, foundation president. After U. S. forces liberated Attu, the PV-1's and PV-2's operated offensively from the Japanese-built air bases.

Hot Stuff belonged to one of these “Empire Express” squadrons, VPB-136, flying long-range bombing missions against the northern Japanese Kurile Islands. It’s been estimated that the Japanese had to divert one-sixth of their fleet in defense of their northern islands because of these aircraft.

“It’s in the process of being nominated for the National and State Historic Register, there is a lot of historical and associative value with this aircraft; it is so important to keep it flying, by this time next year it will officially be a national treasure,” said Litz.

“Hot Stuff” has been on the national airshow circuit for almost two decades and was featured on Aero Shell Square at EAA Airventure Oshkosh in 2005.

The PV-2 Harpoon, the longer-ranged big brother to the PV-1 Ventura, was used as a double for the PV-1 in a Nova documentary, “The Last Flight of Bomber 31,” which aired on national PBS for several years. http://amhf.org/nova.shtml, www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/bomber/)

The Harpoon is viewed as a valuable Indiana resource by the Geography Educators' Network of Indiana, as reflected in the classroom curriculum developed by the organization on behalf of Indiana high school and middle school Social Studies and Language Arts educators. www.iupui.edu/~ghw/lessons/materials/HarpoonActivities.doc

2008 Yankee Air Museum Air Show CELEBRATES
10th anniversary,
Discounted Rates and new flight-line chalet
AUGUST 9th & 10th, 2008

The Yankee Air Museum’s 2008 Chrysler Jeep Superstores “Thunder Over Michigan” Air Display is celebrating its 10th anniversary and will be Saturday, August 9th and Sunday, August 10th, 2008 at Willow Run Airport.

In honor of the 10th anniversary, the Yankee Air Museum promises to make this year’s “Thunder Over Michigan’s” Air Display the best warbird show ever. The Show will feature a salute to the "rough and tough" P-47 Thunderbolt. Plus, a special segment dedicated to the beloved WWII Heavy Bombers- a wide variety of vintage and modern military Fighters, Bombers & Transports that will help celebrate the event's 10th Anniversary.

“In only 10 short years we are proud to have put Detroit on the map in the aviation event industry,” says Kevin T. Walsh, Air Display Director. “Our spectators are from all over the U.S. and Canada and we even have fans traveling overseas from England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.”

New this year is an exclusive Flight-line Chalet allowing guests to upgrade their ticket and enjoy the show in a comfortable and close-up viewing area.

The Flight-Line Chalet is a spacious, tented area designed for guests to enjoy some shade and have access to tables and chairs for relaxation. Space is limited to 300 people per day. Adult Flight-Line Tickets (ages 16+) are $25/per person/per day in advance and $40/per person/per day if purchased at the show site. Kids 15 years old and under are FREE when accompanied by an adult into the Flight-Line Chalet. The Chalet ticket does not include air show admission or parking those tickets must be purchased separately.

This is one of the most fun and affordable events in metro Detroit for the entire family. The Yankee Air Museum eliminated youth fees last year and allows all children 15 years and younger admitted for FREE. Tickets are on sale now for $15 per adult, which is a 40% discount off the regular admission gate price until July 1st. From July 1- August 8th, the tickets are $20 each and then $25 at the gate. Parking is also discounted to $5 per vehicle right now and will be $10 at the gate.

Lauded as America’s best warbird show, the Yankee Air Museum’s 2008 “Thunder Over Michigan” Air Display will also keep with their strong theme of saluting vintage and modern military aircraft.

The Air Display will introduce for the first time ever, North America’s largest, armored WWII battle reenactment featuring numerous armored vehicles and aircraft. Plus in honor of the 10th anniversary, the Air Museum has brought in special guest, Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey, to sign autographs and take pictures with in the Yankee Air Museum tent both on Saturday and Sunday. Ermey has starred in the film “Full Metal Jacket” and was nominated in 1988 for a Golden Globe award for his role. Currently he is working on two films that are in production, “Cat Tale” and “Black Mountain.” He has been in numerous other films and television shows for nearly the last 30 years.

Tickets are available at
www.starticketsplus.com , charge by phone at 800-585-3737, or visit any Meijer store and purchase at the StarTicketsPlus kiosk.

All proceeds from the 2008 Chrysler Jeep Superstores “Thunder Over Michigan” Air Display will be directed to the museum’s efforts to rebuild a new museum complex. In October 2004 the museum suffered a devastating fire in which their entire WWII hangar and most of its contents were lost.

The Yankee Air Museum and “Thunder Over Michigan” are located at the historic Willow Run Airport, 801 Willow Run Airport, Belleville, MI, 48198-0899. For more information, please visit
www.YankeeAirMuseum.org.
