RedBull Air Racing is Coming to San Diego - The Aviation Weblog
The Red Bull Air Race World Series is coming to San Diego this weekend. These guys got big brass ones, but they better not take them to Florida. If you've never seen them fly, you will be in awe. The planes they fly are the fastest, lightest and most agile planes made, and the pilots run them upwards of 250 miles per hour as the pull close to 10 Gs as they navigate them around a course of air-filled pylons.

Air Race History: 1929

Hi hats.jpg (11786 bytes)

The Society of Air Racing Historians provides a nice synopsis of the 1929 Air Races and Aeronautical Exposition held in Cleveland, Ohio. The article includes pictures from the races and interesting facts. I took the liberty of sharing my favorite picture: Col. Lindbergh leading members of US Navy "High Hats" precision aerobatic team.

Visit their site and you'll find write-ups for the Air Races from 1929-1939 and other items of interest. You have to visit this one if you are an air racing fan.

A blind man could have seen this coming. After two months of waiting for our hydraulic lines to be repaired in Washington State, they finally returned. The mechanics tore open the boxes and eagerly inspected them. Then, immediately declared the lines unserviceable. The welds were clearly unacceptable for aviation applications, based upon the visual inspection alone. What a disappointment. Up and away with Konrad
One look at the controls in the cockpit -- air speed indicator, artificial horizon, altimeter, direction gyro and turn coordinator (among many, many other bells and whistles) -- was more than enough to shake me from my "Top Gun" daydreams. This was apparently a basic, bread-and-butter plane, according to my guide for the day, Chief Flight Instructor Pat Gaston of Montgomery Aviation in Zionsville. The ride would be gentle, he said, not turbo-charged. The plane would be a docile beast -- forgiving and user-friendly. Like a Chevy. But it wasn't a Chevy, of course.
