Flightdeck Friday: The F6F-3/-5 Hellcat - Scourge of the Pacific from Tailhook Daily Briefing by Steeljaw Scribe
When WW2 began, the US fighter force (land- and sea-based) was woefully inadequate. Slow in speed and maneuvering, out powered in the climb, often times out-gunned and certainly outnumbered, the fighters that oversaw the US entry into the war were relics of an earlier age, even though most were relatively new production. P-40, F2A, F4F - even the vaunted P-38 all suffered various degrees of inadequacy. In the European Theater of Operations (ETO), the P-47 and ultimately the P-51 would rise to the top of the pile, asserting an ironclad air supremacy that knocked the Luftwaffe from its home skies. In the Pacific Theater - it was the Grumman F6F and specifically the F6F-3 and -5 models that gave the fast carrier task force its lethal offensive counter-air punch…
Tiger Tales: Aviation Legacy at Marion Military Institute from Alabama Aviator - Aviation News
The Flying Tiger- While addressing the Corps of Cadets at Marion Military Institute (MMI) shortly before his death, General Bruce K. Holloway related to the enthralled audience how he had arrived in Marion, Alabama, to attend the School of Army and Navy, a program at MMI for prepping future West Point and Annapolis candidates. Lacking the price of a ticket, he had talked the bus driver into letting him ride with the luggage on the roof of the bus from his hometown in Tennessee. In 1932, it must have been quite a trip. After prepping at MMI and attending the University of Tennessee, Bruce Holloway qualified for entry into the US Military Academy graduating from West Point in the class of 1937 and flight training in 1938. His subsequent career in the Army Air Corps and US Air Force is the stuff of legends…

Lackland Airfest 2008 from www.airshowbuzz.com
Just got in from the Sunday show and it was "Awesome". Just a little warm but other than that everything was perfect. The Horsemen made a surprise apperance and show. Thanks Ed and Dan. "Max" Moga and the Raptor had their usual outstanding performance. Ed Hamil and Greg Poe was at their outstanding aerobatic best. And the "Blues' minus 1 (#4) filled the air with excitement. Also got to meet "Zeke". He will be the next Raptor Pilot. A real nice and classy guy, the Air Force really knows how to pick them. Tora group put alot of explosions and smoke on the base. And a "Big" surprise to see the P-39 "Airacobra" from the Centex Wing of the CAF in San Marcos, TX fly in their re-enactment of Pearl Harbor.
